Greetings!

First post:)

I've got a Maxtor internal HDD that was used a secondary HDD. I now want to use it as an external memory via a docking station. The problem is that it doesn't appear in 'My Computer' as a seperate device. Although it appears in the administrator and is apparently working ok. It also has the habit of freezing the screen where I'm trying to work on it.

I would like to clean/reformat it, if I could just get into it.

Any tips please

Hi and welcome to ExTS.

Is this a SATA or IDE drive?

If it is IDE then you may need to change the jumper position to get the drive recognised.

( It depends how it was setup originally ).

Do you have another drive to try in the caddy?

If this doesn't show in Disk Management then I would suspect the problem lies with the adapter.

Hi, KenB,

I have another drive that works just fine in the station.

I've also tried it on another laptop, unfortunately with the same result.

Cheers

You say that the drive was used as a secondary drive - presumably internal on a desktop?

If you connect the drive to the motherboard again, is the drive recognised ?

If the drive is "freezing the screen" as you suggest and is not showing in Disk Manager and other drives are showing normally - I would suggest that the problem lies with the drive itself.

Unless others have another suggestion.

Thanks for your help, KenB.

It is difficult to fix it without seeing it for yourself.

Hi, if that drive was in a machine where the motherboard failed, if that failure was due to a power supply failing, then the power surge that killed the motherboard could well have damaged the drive as well.
