Guest teejdancer Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I need to restore all settings on my computer....is this microsoft backup facility appropriate for that?....Or do i need to enter into 3rd party backup? I have put documents onto a memory stick but have tons of photos and music and don't want to have to put these on disks......?
Guest marx404 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Re: microsift backup ok if I'm going to restore computer???? I use MS Backup frequently. It does save your apps and documents and settings, however one simple drawback is you must first install Windows XP using the OEM disk before using backup to restore your clean image. So far, it has worked perfect for me, although Office 2000 is the only app that doesn't properly restore, but that's ok, I have the CD. I use an external USB hard drive. -- marx404 _________________ "teejdancer" <teejdancer@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:F1A204A2-BABF-44DE-844D-74F1FC899C80@microsoft.com... >I need to restore all settings on my computer....is this microsoft backup > facility appropriate for that?....Or do i need to enter into 3rd party > backup? No, not really appropriate for anything. > Or do i need to enter into 3rd party > backup? Yep. > I have put documents onto a memory stick but have tons of photos and > music and don't want to have to put these on disks......? Buy an external hard disk. The cheapest way to do that is buy a hard disk and an external USB enclosure. Alias

A program that would, in effect, backup your entire system including the operating system, all your programs & applications, all your user-created files & folders, etc. In short, *everything* that's on your day-to-day working hard drive. Isn't that what you really want & need? If it is, why don't you do a Google search on "disk cloning disk imaging programs"? There's a lot of good, detailed information out there on those types of programs and I think you would profit by learning more about them. And while you're at it, take a look at this site which compares various backup approaches...http://www.ugr.com/nl0507b.html Anna

In order to completely restore a hard drive, you must have a bootable XP CD and a floppy drive. ATI is so much easier to use. Jim
