XP Pro going crazy???

Recommended Posts

Everything was just fine since I installed xp pro about 3 weeks ago. Now I

get pop ups galore everywhere and windows keeps telling me that automatic

updates is turned off (i never turned it off).

I ran ad aware 2008 and removed infections.

I also ran trojan hunter trial edition and removed 2 infections.

I also ran AVG 8.0 and removed infections.

I finally went into services and put automatic updates on automatic again

and enabled it....but it won't let me do it. I apply it but it stays off and

disabled.

what is going on here??

I am always running antivirus software, ad ware software and have never ever

had a problem with viruses or malware, etc. what can i do?

I am fixing to reinstall xp and format everything........

After running the scans, did you reboot and run them again?

Here's what I did. Run this anti-spyware:, the *free* version:

http://www.superantispyware.com/ Let it clean your machine....reboot, then

turn *off* system restore*...reboot...run the spyware again, reboot turn

system restore back on and you should be clean.

Re: XP Pro going crazy???

No I did not restart. I turned it off and went to bed after the initial

scans.....

This morning I ran ad aware again and it found the same infection....which i

think is called vutu.....or vuntu.....something like that (im at work). I

quaratined it and left to work.

Everytime I start the scan with ad aware.....avg sees it as a threat....but

i allow it.

what can it be........I would hate to format windows and reinstall.

Re: XP Pro going crazy???

You son should be given a limited access account so that he can't mess

around with the system by downloading all sorts of things. Your main

account should be password protected. In fact, I don't see why you

should operate an administrator account for your day to day usage. You

should also have a limited Access Account which will allow you to use

emails, browse the web, print etc etc . Limited Access Account doesn't

allow you to install any programs - which is the main source of viruses

and spywares.

Re: XP Pro going crazy???

What is probably happening is that your machine is not being cleaned of the

file that is creating the virus. The virus is being wiped but when you boot

or reboot, the creator file is run which then creates the virus again. When

you get home, please post back with the exact name of the virus and somebody

should be able to help. Some of these infections can be real buggers to get

rid of.
