Guest Hernan Batista Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Hi friends, I already install a new server and with DCPROMO right now it is a Replica DC of my domain. Now, my question is: Can I just shutdown my actual DC and the Replica DC will act as the new DC ? or should I do something before? is something related to "delegate control" ? thanks men HB

Guest Hernan Batista Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Re: unplug DC and use Replica DC Hi Danny, thanks for your soon answer, I need to shut it down to reimage it (format), and for a while use the Replica as DC, then restart again the fresh DC.... by the way, with the same procedure (using DCPROMO) can I return the fresh DC as the Main DC? In that case, make sure the new server is Global Catalog (GC) by checking the box Active Directory Sites and Services on the NTDS settings. Also make sure you transfer the five FSMO roles the first DC has: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801 http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm Check whether DNS is Active Directory Integrated and if not, configure it so. Wait for it to replicate and direct all clients to use the 2nd DC's ip as the preferred DNS server. Before you *finally* shut down the first DC, I suggest you plug off DC's network cable for a while to see whether there arise issues if it is offline. Unless you *really* have reason to remove the machine from operating, I suggest you leave it online. To be honest, it seems like you're not very experienced with AD administration - which actually is not a bad thing - and I really suggest you consider consulting some external help (a consultant, trainer, migrator, whatever) to help you get things sorted (or a least a plan on catching up AD specific administration tasks). cheers, Florian -- Microsoft MVP - Windows Server - Group Policy. eMail: prename [at] frickelsoft [dot] net. blog: http://www.frickelsoft.net/blog. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Re: unplug DC and use Replica DC Hello Hernan, If the new DC is also DNS server and DHCP, if you are not using fixed ip's. Additional make the new DC Global catalog server BEFORE shutdown the first one. Also the clients has to know the new DNS server, otherwise they can not logon, because they have to contact a DNS server to find the domain controller. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Re: unplug DC and use Replica DC Hello Hernan, Delegate control configurations are stored in AD so if the replication is done completely before shutdown the old one, no problem and effect. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Re: unplug DC and use Replica DC Hello Hernan, Please do not image a DC, additional you wrote format, what is the correct way. Imaging and reinstalling a DC results very often in problems, because the Update sequence numbers from AD are creating conflicts. If you remove the DC this way without demoting, what will be the correct way, the entry is still existing in Active directory and has to be removed from the database by hand with ntdsutil according to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498 As another step you have to seize the 5 FSMO roles to the existing DC according to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504 So try to FIRST move/transfer the FSMO roles before shutting down: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801 Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > Hi Danny, thanks for your soon answer, I need to shut it down to > reimage it (format), and for a while use the Replica as DC, then > restart again the fresh DC.... by the way, with the same procedure > (using DCPROMO) can I return the fresh DC as the Main DC? > > HB > > "Danny Sanders" <DSanders@NOSPAMciber.com> escribió en el mensaje > news:ee6KHRW0IHA.4704@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > >> Delegate control has nothing to do with this. >> >> If all it's providing is AD then you can turn it off.............but >> why?
