Guest specops70 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I was wondering something. When I was having problems installing xp about 3 weeks ago I called tech support. The XP disk I have I bought at the University so the tech told me that I can only install 2 or 3 times and thats it. Now he also said that if the installation detects different hardware it won't let me activate. I am probably going to reinstall on the same computer...no changes from 3 weeks ago.......It won't give me any problems will it? since there are no hardware changes?? Its the exact same PC. thanks.

If you have a Retail copy of XP it can be loaded on any PC. If you have an OEM CD it may be keyed to the hardware (bios) and can fail. You have to explain more about what you are loading this onto, machine specs, and the labeling on the CD that you got. I think the 2 / 3 times is a bit of hogwash. With the limited info you gave this is about all the help I can afford you.

Wrong again. > I am probably going to reinstall on the same computer...no changes > from 3 > weeks ago.......It won't give me any problems will it? As long as you have the proper license and the accompanying Product Key, you are good to go. However, since your reinstall time frame (three weeks) is less than 120 days, automatic activation via Internet will probably not occur. Simply call the phone number you see on the screen at that particular point of the installation process and follow the instructions. It shouldn't take longer than an additional five minutes. And the above holds even if you *do* replace/upgrade components in your PC.

Don't activate until you have the computer the way that you want it.
