I used to have a HP Scanner, now I have a Cannon. When I open one of my applications

(PrintMaster 12) to make a small poster and I try to scan in the picture, it tries to

open my old HP scanner. It doesn't have any other choices. Can I get help

here?Thanks.

Uninstall the HP software then reinstall the Canon software (after making

certain it's Win98-compatible).

Re: newsgroup for win98 and scanning

I uninstalled the HP scanner software over a year ago. I have other HP software for

HP printer and photosmart. There is no HP scanner showing up in my computer,

scanners. What does show up is CanoScan Lide 70, CanoScan Lide 70 #2, CanoScan Lide

70 #3, and CanoScan Lide 70 #4. Under properties it says Device Ready \\.\MpUsbScn0.

for the first one ....under events it says CanoScan COPY Button and then it has a

check mark next to CanoScan Toolbox Ver 5.0. No checks in any of the other boxes.

Should I put check marks in HP PrecisionScan , etc. so that the Canon Toolbox will

open when HP is called for. Because the machine is not finding the HP

scanner.....it's not here or in my machine.

Fastest fix:

1. Uninstal Printmaster.

2. Use REGEDIT to locate and remove all keys to

Printmaster of HP hardware (that you do not have.)

3. Then reinstal Printmaster and configure it for

the Canon scanner.

We assume you have already installed Win98 device

drivers for the Canon scanner. The TWAIN driver

is essential for scanning, and perhaps Printmaster

recognizes only one (HP).

#2 and # 3 say "unavailable" , #4 seems to be a clone of CanoScan Lide 70, and says

it is "device ready", available. Should I remove # 2 and # 3. (These are under

scanners and camera's in the control panel) in case I wasn't clear. Thanks. Ginny

QUESTION: Was PrintMaster 12 part of the old HP scanner software package?

I'm not sure why you have multiple instances of CanonScan shown, unless

these were from previous installations or failed installations.

PA suggested uninstalling the software, which sounds reasonable, but you

might need to do the same for the PrintMaster software *IF it wasn't* part

of an HP scanner software suite. If it was, it MAY be branded to their

scanner. That might be possible to circumvent via installer INFs or

otherwise...

IF it *was not* an HP suite, then you may have an INI or other file which

needs modified for the PrintMaster application..

| Should I put check marks in HP PrecisionScan ,

Huh, where does this come from if you uninstalled the HP scanner. The Canon

should have come with its own software package [twain/scanning application].

| etc. so that the Canon Toolbox will

| open when HP is called for. Because the machine is not finding the HP

| scanner.....it's not here or in my machine.

It sounds or rather looks like you have registry entries and possible

software which need removed. HOW, is likely going to take uninstalling the

software, printer and scanner, starting in Safe Mode and removing left

overs, checking the registry for any old entries, and then re-installing.

It is also possible that win.ini and/or system.ini also contain old entries

for the HP scanner which need removed.

Have you determined that the Canon scanner is Win98-compatible? Have you

contacted Canon Support?

Re: newsgroup for win98 and scanning

I have a Canon 4200f scanner and the CanoScan Toolbox 4.6, so I'm not sure

how much of what follows would apply, but I think most of it would:

I always work through the Toolbox, which allows you to preview/crop the

image, set scan quality, and specify what app you want to link it to and

where you want to save it. You don't have to have any other program open. So

if I want a jpg scan I can link it through the toolbox dialog box to

Paintshop Pro, or Picassa, and save the image to desktop (or anywhere else).

For a pdf I can link it to Foxit and save it to desktop. If I want to

convert to text I can link to OmniPage SE2 (supplied on the Canon

installation disk) and save it to desktop.

I'm not familiar with Printmaster but I don't see how any operation

involving scanning couldn't be done in this way, and since you'd be starting

from the scanner itself, there should be no chance for confusion on the part

of Printmaster. If Printmaster has its own particular file type, the Toolbox

should allow you to set that up.

What you describe reminds me of what sometimes happens with conflicting mice

drivers that don't completely uninstall. The way I've dealt with that

(thanks to advice posted in this very newsgroup) is to start in safe mode

and go into device manager. The problem devices are shown with a yellow

question mark and it then becomes a simple matter to remove them. Don't know

if this would apply to your HP drivers but it would be simple to check.

Another possibility is that HP may have a supplemental uninstaller, similar

to what you need for Nero, Norton Acrobat Reader, and too many others.

Issue resolved by a careful cleanup of Device Manager in Safe Mode. Once the

left-over HP scanner and it's supporting junk was removed, along with a lot

of other obsolete and/or seriously duplicated devices, as per usual), and

along with all the copies of the Canon scanner, the Canon got reinstalled

during restart and Printmaster was able to properly interpret things.
