XP not starting up in "full" mode

Fujitsu-Siemens laptop running XP Media centre.

When starting up, gets to blue screen (not BSOD) with "windiws

starting" but never progresses.

F8 - last known good configuration no better, VGA mode no different.

F8 - safe mode starts up fine.

From safe mode, trying to return to a previous restore point (even one

aeons ago) starts restoring files "procedure"/screen, but never

completes... at best some files get retsored (blue bar is partially

filled across the screen).

F8 - safe mode with command prompt OK but chkdsk /f doesn;t actually

ever start a scan on subsequent reboot into safe mode.

Am stuck with how to proceed.

Sorry if this is a FAQ but have googled and found nothing definitive

to date.

cheers

Since it boots fine in safe mode, something being started at boot may be the

problem:
