On XP SP2, I typically have quite a few windows open and every now and then

run out of memory.

I was opening an email from outlook and got the error message. I closed my

Sql Server Management Studio program that had just opened a table with 3000

records. I was able then to open the email fine.

But when I looked at my Windows Task Manager:

It showed:

Comment Charge(k)

Total 1461856

Threads 4553192

Peak 1674268

I thought that Peak showed what the most memory I had used at any one time

and it was fine if less than the Limit (4553192). My peak is way below

that.

Am I mistaken here?

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Out of memory

Task Manager actually is not very sophisticated for troubleshooting -

consider Process Explorer (Microsoft site).

The "Out of Memory" message is generated when a program/utility does not

release resources, not correctly closed or is still running in background -

Task Manager may or may not provide information - under processes "svchost"

may indicate high CPU use but does not identify the specific

culprit.usually refers to virtual memory.

I have that and it works well for looking at different services.

But I am trying to look at a way to see what my max memory is, what I am

using and what is the max I used, which is what those numbers were supposed

to tell me.

I think that Process explorer only shows you what you have now.

Thanks,
