[OT] Unidentified USB device on all USB Ports after reboot,...

Hi,

this question is rather OT here but its hardware stuff, so

maybe someone can help me out in solving this because

i have a serious problem on my Windows XP System:

After rebooting the system, all my USB devices are

rejected from the System after plugging them into a

USB slot with the Popup "Unidentified USB device".

I removed any USB device entry, even roothub and

all usb stuff from the Device Managers Treenodes,

rebootet, reinstalled all hardware drivers (installed

automatically from system itelsf), rebooted again,

plugged my WLAN stick on and got the same

message after saying that it was successflly installed

and is ready to use. Message was again"Unidentified USB device",

after telling me, that the deivice is ready,...nocthing is/was ready!

Any ideas how to fiy this,...?

I really changed nothing on the System!

Regards

You say you rebooted, what did you do just before you rebooted? Perhaps

you replaced the correct drivers with incorrect drivers, and now you

keep re-installing the wrong ones. Visit the manufacturers web site if

you don't have the driver CD for your system, and do NOT use hardware

drivers from Windows Update!

Hi Bob,

i removed all the "Unknown Devices" on my system,

the ones that you dont see in the Device Manager unless

you tell it to show the hidden devices. Thats all,...

The Hardware seems fine,. I rebooted with Live Linux

and all USB Slots and Hubs are ok, includig hardware

devices. This see,s to be a windows problem, someting

with the hardware database or registry,...

Please install the correct drivers from the motherboard CD or go to the

motherboard manufactures website and get them.

when the devices enumerate in this state, open up device manager and view

the properties for each device that has failed. go to the Details tab and

look at the Hardware IDs and Compatible IDs listed. do they contain 0000

for the VID and PID?

That was your mistake. If it wasn't broken, why did you feel the desire to

Kerem, is it possible for you to do a Windows XP System Restore to the

Is the issue that ALL of your USB devices are unrecognized, thumb drives

or memory stick, a USB printer, a USB mouse. Or just the one device is a

problem.

Hi Bob,

the answer is "all". It is really a big problem, since i cant

use any UDB device anylonger. I have to plugin all devices

into my other mobile system and use them (as far it is possible

to use the device from another system!) from a remote system.

This is really no long time soution, since there are devices that

cant be used "remotely",...

You may have had an overload that caused this. I would do the following:

Add a System Environment Variable:

DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices

and set it's value = 1

Unplug all USB peripherals from the problem computer.

Open Device Manager

Click View, tic/check "Show Hidden Devices"

Going through each device category ( Except System & Sound ) locate

all entries shown in diminished tone or grayed out. Right Click each one

and choose Uninstall. Once all categories are purged of "Phantoms" reboot

the PC and one at a time reinsert the USB devices. If each one successfully

enumerates I'd check the USB category, Root Hub, Power (TAB) to see

how much of each hub's 500mA current draw is being consumed. Do this

for each Root Hub as it also can help show if you're concentrating your

devices to a single hub and not allocating them across different hubs. (Only

applies to USB-1(.1) devices. All USB 2 peripherals route to a single or

double controller/hub.

What you see in USB host and hub class and enum registries? Any unknown

filter?

I guess the best would be remove all USB host adapters and root hub and let

OS reinstall them.

Hi ALexander,

What i did so far: Deleted the INFCACHE file, removed all USB devices,

including

roothub and any USB driver and "hardware" from my system, deleted any USB*

key

from hklm/system/currentcontrolset/enum*

OS rebooted, everyting was reinstalled from OS, looked fine->plugged USB

device

in->told me "usb device detected" and usb"device installed successfully" and

"usb device

failed", "usb device could not be installed", "usb be device could be faster

with a faster

usb interface", someting like that in german and i am not kidding: all these

messages,

notifyicons and pupups at the same time,...

Now i really dont know what to do,...DevieManager still tells me that

there is a unknown device for usb,....and still teh usb device is

inaccessible,...

I mean, this is where my mind start thinking what really lead to this

disaster.

I, afaik, changed nothing on my system, neither Driver installed, nor

registry

driver entries changed, nothing that could affect the OS core itself,...no

rootkids

afaik, checked with Rootkit Revealer, cheked loded drivers by process

explorer,

made a deep av check,...seems to be clean. There must be someting really

deeply

destroyed or some driver does not allow the USB to communicate with the

syste

as Doron said, but where, why and when did that happen?

I removed any virualization software from my system, that dealed in some way

with

my USB hardware,...no change,...

Really dont know what tp do now,...reinstalling os or something like that is

really no

option for me, since this must be someting that could be repared or better

to say at least found, whats blocking/filtering,etc,...

Regards

Kerem

You had virtualization software? Check for any filters left over in USB

class.
