shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 I am a little confused about your question could you please explain fuller/ I have deleted things from my computer but cannot get rid of the shortcut icons from the desktop. I cannot delete them. I cannot drag them to the recycle bin and if I right click on them I get the box that I would get if I clicked on the desktop. So the shortcuts do not lead to anything but cannot get them off th desktop. Some of them are connected to programs but they will not work either Quote
PseFrank Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hi Shnos... Try this: Go...Start > Control Panel (Classic view) > Display Click on the Desktop tab. Click Customize Desktop. Click Clean Desktop Now. When the wizard opens click Next. Check/Tick any icon that you Don't want. Click Next. Click Finish. You will now have an Unused Icon folder on the desktop. It is also possible that you may have Malware. Please let us know how you get on. Quote I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :) Need help with your computer problems? shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Hi frank i tried that it only had 2 items in the clean box but over 20 are on the desk top. I did try that yesterday it seems to have taken the shortcuts off the desktop but left the symbols for them as I can only use 2 of them Quote
PseFrank Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Does anyone else have access to your computer? If they do, or you think someone else may have used your computer before you had this problem, you may be the victim of a prank. Right click on any image (.jpg is good) from your files/My Pictures) and choose Set as Desktop background from the menu. Post back and tell us what happens. shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 No desktop background is fine I can change that. Its the short cut symbols that seem to be glued to the desktop. All I can open or move is google chrome and malwarebytes . Everything else including shortcut to explorer is just like it is stuck to the screen Quote
KenB Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 No desktop background is fine I can change that. I think Frank was suggesting that your desktop ( with icons ) may well be just one image. Which is why you cannot move or click on any "Icon". Did you actually try to change the desktop wallpaper to something new? shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Yes Ken and it was still the same 2 of the icons will move the rest wont. Quote
shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 it looks like I used the run desktop cleanup wizard and it has taken the short cuts away but left the icons. They cannot be deleted and cannot even be moved or used. Strange have never heard of his happening before Quote
KenB Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hi, Assuming O/S is XP : Download this fix from Kelly's Korner. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Scroll down to number 195 ( right side ) I have recommended this fix before with successes. The d/l is safe. This is a registry fix so you may wish to create a Restore Point first. Start > Run ...type in ....msconfig .....ENTER Launch System Restore. Create New Restore Point. shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 It wont let me install it says it cannot find script engine :-( Quote
KenB Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Strange - not had that one before. Try System Restore to a date when you know the icons were functioning normally. shnos Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 It says to work correctly windows will close explorer shell I press ok it says finished but nothing seems to have happened Quote
KenB Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 it says finished It takes no time at all to complete the re-registering. Do you have a full XP installation CD ( not recovery disks ) ? KenB Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 I was going to suggest a Repair Install - but this is not possible without the CD. I am out of suggestions at this point. Frank or Randy may have another idea or two. I will wait to see what they suggest. Sorry I cannot be of more assistance. KenB Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 One more thought .... Try the d/l from Kelly again. With the VBScript DLL reregistered it may have solved that particular problem.
