Problem with too many processes running

XP Pro SP2

I am having a number of issues with my computer and I will list them

all because they might be related.

During startup:

(1) DOS screen -- less than 20 seconds. Sometimes the first character

of each line is missing. Sometimes not.

(2) Windows XP progress bar. varies 5-30 seconds

(3) Black screen. Sometimes with mouse curser. Varies from 5 seconds

to 2 minutes.

(4) Logins --

(4a) To desktop -- 6 seconds.

(4b) Adding icons on lower menu bar. Varies 1 from minute to 10

minutes. With task-manager I have watched these processes run during

the time that the menu bar is filling up. Here are the ones that

consume resources:

Ad-Watch

alg.exe

ALi5289.exe

brmfRsmg.exe

cidmwa.exe

explorer.exe

FPAVserver.exe

inetinfo.exe

iPodService.exe (I don't have an iPod)

Isass.exe

iTunesHelper.exe

jusched.exe

reader_sl.exe

Smc.exe

svchost.exe

System.exe

taskmgr.exe (sometimes it takes 30% of resources)

wmi.exe

wmipruse.exe

wvaudt.exe

The processes have these user names:

system

local service

network service

my name

Q1 -- Are any of these processes suspicious looking?

Q2 -- Are all these processes necessary during startup? Should I be

blocking any of them?

Q3 -- What software tools, if any, are recommended to control these

processes?

RE: Problem with too many processes running

Ipodservice comes with quicktime player.

Do a search for hijackthis and read the instructions, DO NOT post the log to

this area.

Quicktime and itunes were separate items in add/remove programs --

even though they install from one file. I removed iTunes and left

Quicktime.
