Am I able to restore an image of XP generated on one computer to

another computer. I have an extra xp cd-rom with serial number. I've

heard about doing a repair option but haven't tried it before. I'm

trying to avoid having to install all the drivers and programs.

Thanks,

Pete

If you attempt to restore an image of a WinXP installation onto a

non-identical computer, the very first thing you'll have to do is a

repair installation to install all of the correct device drivers. (The

applications should remain untouched.)

RE: Install XP Image

That's a bit odd, you're attempting to 'retain' your computer configuration

by using the configuration from another computer?

Not following your logic there. You will lose everything that you've

done/customized to the original install. Not to mention, will likely

generate a TON of work getting the 'cloned' image to run properly, not to

mention, this just doesn't sound like a good idea.

Not to be harsh or anything, just making an observation, please don't take

this the wrong way---if you've not accumulated the experience of having to

perform a repair with the OS CD, you likely shouldn't be tackling SID

regeneration problems and hardware redetection issues.

About the only scenario that I'd think about doing it this was-- the last

sole copy of a valid/functioning driver in the whole of computer existence is

only found within the image file of a pc that you'd snapshotted in the past

that no longer exists today--pretty far fetched, I know.

OS Repair from OS CD is pretty significant, but pales in comparison to

reimaging, unless you're working from a script sheet that, say, your senior

pc tech drafted on how to reimage rather than repair OS problems on PCs...
