I am running XP SP3. Despite 3 attempts, critical update KB899589 failed to

download. Not sure where to go from here.

Any suggestions?

Glad to see I am not the only one having the same problem! When I look at the

file KB899589.log in my c:\Windows folder it contains the following ;" Setup

has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the

update you are applying. There is no need to install this update.

4.235: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf06b"

Nevertheless I am receiving recurrent notifications that the update is available

for my system.

Re: KB899589 failed to instal

This appears to be a bug in the Windows Update detection logic. KB899589

should not be needed if WinXP SP3 was installed properly.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]

Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop

(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]

Open the Download folder and delete its contents

Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website > Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to

complete > Uncheck/deselect KB899589 and hide it ("Don't show me this update

again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]

Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start

(Starting the service will take a moment)

YW but I was replying to Jeff, not you. It's not always safe to follow

instructions/recommendations posted for another user, Gerry. It's always

best to begin a new thread about your problem, even if it appears to be

identical to someone else's.

Re: KB899589 failed to instal

Without having read this thread, here's how it went with me.

Offered updates to download, accepted. ...589 was one of

them, only the rest (one, actually) got downloaded. Offered

opportunity to install that, did so. Rebooted. Smelled rottenness

in Denmark's atmosphere, went to Windows Update tool.

Offered nothing. Did it twice, to make sure. ...589 seems

to be off the radar, for me.
