Guest Nick B Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Sometime after upgrading Windows XP Home Edition SP2 to SP3 we started to experience an odd hanging. If the computer is not used for several hours (hibernate, standby, and turn off hard disks are all off), we can click on an icon on the desktop to highlight it. We can then click on a different icon and that will become highlighted without a problem, but as soon as we try to open something (program, folder, etc.) from either the desktop or the Taskbar, Windows freezes. The mouse will still move around, but you cannot click on anything. You can hover over the expand arrow on the system tray and it does say "Show hidden icons", but if you click on the arrow, that becomes frozen as well. The interesting thing is that the Task Manager will not appear (Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Ctrl+Shift+Esc). We have to hold the power button in to turn the machine off and back on. Occasionally it will also hang during this reboot after you select the user to log in. Haven't tried removing SP3 by way of System Restore yet hoping that someone may have a different idea. No other hardware or programs have been installed and the Event Logs do not show anything. Any ideas? Thanks!
