Guest becox Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 the following files were corrupted: windowsroot\system32\ntoskrnl.exe system32\drivers\ntfs.sys I copied them from an old cloned D drive. and it still won't re boot. I have tried safe mode, safemode with networking, with command prompt, last known config and normally. It sends me in a loop
Guest Gerry Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup disk What is the computer make and model. What exactly do you have by way of a Windows XP CD? Are you seeing a Stop Error Report? If yes what does it say? Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before Automatically Restart. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message. An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on system failure. If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only. What is the position regarding data on the disk? Did you have a backup or is it necessary to recover data? -- Hope this helps. Guest becox Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup Thank you Gerry: When I reboot, it prompts me to select operating system ; start normally. Where can I find the corrupted files below, to reinstall them. I tried from a cloned D drive, but I keep going in a loop, never getting to lonon or desktop. Than k you. Guest becox Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup I have back up of data files. when I reboot, I am asked to select operating system to start: there are 5 choices, all Microsoft windows xp professional Ihave tried safe mode, safe mode wiht networking, safe mode with command prompt , previous working and normall. Each takes me back to the choose operatintg system screen. The first time the ntoskrnl.exe file was missing. I copied from a cloned d drive to the c drive. then the system32\drivers\ntfs.sys was missing, so I copied that from the d drive. Now it is just a loop, never getting as far as a logon or desktip. thank you bruce "becox" wrote: > > the computer is a gateway pentium 4 with windows xp professional > service paks 1 2, and 3 have been downloaded and installed. > > The recovery program has not worked, I am in a loop. Guest ju.c Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup Re: Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup Your problem sounds just like what happened to me when I installed 'Roxio Easy Media Creator 10'. The 'Roxio EMC 10' installer deleted every file on the root drive! Not folders, just files, like boot.ini and ntldr. Unbelievable! Anyway, something may have deleted files on your root drive too. After you copied the files your PC wouldn't boot because there was no boot.ini and/or ntldr. If you have a backup you need to copy all the files back. ju.c "becox" <becox@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:59D0081B-5342-43CF-ADCF-953988607C5B@microsoft.com... > I have back up of data files. > > when I reboot, I am asked to select operating system to start: > there are 5 choices, all Microsoft windows xp professional > > Ihave tried safe mode, safe mode wiht networking, safe mode with command > prompt , previous working and normall. How could the program possibly be that screwed up? If that happened, enough people would have complained, and that issue would have been corrected (I would expect). Are you sure something else wasn't at work here?

I just had a difficult time believing Roxio (or any decent software manufacturer!) could have been this stupid (to allow that to happen in the first place).
