Viewing updates before installing them

I just love windows XP and the automatic download. However, I wish to do the

install at my request. I have the button checked for the automatic download

and install at my request, but I would like to know ahead of time what I'm

installing. Is there a way I can see what is being downloading before I click

the Install ? I keep hearing horror stories about SP3 and do not want to

install it. I'm currently running SP2 with no problems. How can I be sure

that I don't install SP3 by mistake.

Thanks

How to change your Automatic Updates:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875349/en-us

Configure Automatic Updates to Prompt You Before You Download Updates

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283629/en-us

How to remove Automatic Updates icon in system tray:

Control Panel/Security Center/Change the way Security Center Alerts Me

What I do is to turn off 'Automatic Updates',

Then I manually update Windows by going the URL listed below (Windows

Update)

Then choosing the 'Custom' option and then unchecking those updates I do not

want.

I do not "ever" download and install drivers from Microsoft, far too often

they cause

more problems then they fix.

If you have it set for download and notify, then just click 'custom

install' and you can modify the things that are installed. You can also

turn one off and permanently ignore it.

I used to skip the RDP update. I hated the SP2 update to that program.

The one in SP3 is a bit better.

Select the "Notify Only" option instead. After doing so, you will have to

approve what updates are downloaded and when they're installed.

Re: Viewing updates before installing them

You can download a 'Service Pack Blocker' tool from Microsoft at

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D7C9A07A-5267-4BD6-87D0-E2A72099EDB7&displaylang=en

This will allow you to turn on Automatic Updates, but keep SP3 from

automatically being downloaded and installed for '12 months following

general availability' -- so it should be effective until May, 2009.

Hi. What are the known problems with SP3? I think it has been automatically

installed. I have some directory (folder) problems. I've opened another

thread on this. Could this be the reason and how can I fix it. DSee other

thread.

Thanks all.
