Missing Driver

Excuse me if I'm at the wrong forum. I'm a beginner to these forums and

hopefully someone can help me out.

I installed a Sony DVD-RW external burner about a month ago and it

worked fine up until this weekend. When I went to use it, it said "driver

not installed." So I did the standard, unplug etc. and nothing worked. I

would put a CD in and hear it humming but nothing ever happened. I wrote to

Sony who had me check the Device Manager. It shows a yellow question mark

with a "Code 1." Then I started to get a prompt saying "new hardware found"

but when I go to click on that, it just keeps searching and searching and

again ... nothing happens. One day it worked, the next day it didn't.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I can get this working

again? Thanks in advance.

Hello, Debora::

When you bought the problem-unit, did it come with an install-CD?

If so, have you tried to re-install with the disc?

If not, have you tried arming yourself with the burner's model

number &

going to the Sony website & downloading any updated drivers for the

unit?

Debora,

Could you please provide the exact make/model of the DVD-RW.

Was an install disk provided with the drive?

If yes, have you tried reinstalling the drivers using the disk?

If no, have you checked Sony's support site for updated/drivers for your

specific drive to download/install per their instructions?

Re: Missing Driver

Yes, the unit did come with an installation CD, however, my computer

won't recognize that I even have a CD unit installed so I can't use any type

of CD. The internal CD burner that came with the computer eventually burned

out and I replaced it with this external Sony. I wrote to Sony first and

they were the ones who directed me to find out if my driver was missing,

which it is, but they didn't offer to update the driver nor can I find it on

their site. Thank you for your help.

Re: Missing Driver

The Sony DRX-S7OU is a USB Plug-n-Play unit. It doesn't come with a

driver. See http://sony.storagesupport.com/node/7183

Also see http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/265#faq

Is the Device Manager entry with the error under "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" or

under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"?

The Device Manager entry is under "other devices" with the yellow

question mark, and then under that is the model number of the Sony, DRX-S7OU.

Re: Missing Driver

What, if anything, happened to your system just prior to the problem

occurring?

Assuming that the answer to the above is "Nothing" or "I don't recall,"

and also assuming that you haven't installed or uninstalled any software

(including updates) since the problem happened, try using System Restore

to go back to a point prior to the problem. If this fixes things, then

you're good to go. If it doesn't, you can "undo" the System Restore and

then try the following --

- Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Software and uninstall the

software you installed from the CD (one or more Nero apps; InCD).

- Disconnect the USB DVD drive.

- If you have USB devices connected to the computer other than your

mouse and/or keyboard, disconnect them.

- Reboot in Safe Mode.

- Go to Device Manager and click View > Show hidden devices

- Expand the entry for Other Devices and uninstall all instances of the

DVD drive that are there.

- Do the same for the entry for DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

- Reboot into normal mode.

- Connect the USB DVD drive, making sure that it is connected to a USB

2.0 port (if possible, a different port than the one to which you

originally connected it), and see if it is properly detected and

installed this time.

- Reinstall the software from the CD.

No, nothing happened prior to the problem occuring. One night it

worked, the next night it didn't. I tried a System Restore already and that

didn't work. I will try your other suggestion this week and see what

happens. I have no idea how to start my computer in safe mode so I will have

to look up those directions. Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it.

Re: Missing Driver

I've done everything suggested here for my problem and still nothing is

working. I called Sony again today and they suggested trying a Roxio Zap

program, that it takes care of the Code 1 problem 9 out of 10 times. Of

course I'm the one it didn't work for. No big surprise there. I've talked

to Microsoft, who says it's a Sony problem. I've talked to Sony who says

next I have to talk to Microsoft. I did a "day by day" system restore from

the first day I got the DVD-RW (when it used to work correctly) and even that

didn't work (let's not even talk about how time consuming that was and a

total waste of a day). Today I tried opening things I probably didn't have

any business opening but what did I have to lose? It doesn't work anyway. I

still have the yellow question mark in the Device Manager, it still keeps

searching for hardware that it can never find. Sometimes it shows the Code 1

error, sometimes it changes to Code 28. I read posts dating back to 2004 for

some "kellyscorner" site and tried that. Nothing. I read everything I could

on the Sony support pages and it says the model I have is a "plug and play."

Now, I may have little knowledge of technical terms, but duh? I would think

plug and play means exactly that? Just like it used to, I plugged it in the

night I got it, it played and then poof! It's gone! I spent way too many

hours today on this computer. Housework doesn't get done while I'm online.

But I want my burner back for my music! I'm going into withdrawal here!

Help!

Re: Missing Driver

I tried line 400 & rebooted. When I put the installation CD in I got

all excited because it started to hum like it was working. Nope! Nothing,

nada, zilch. I'm back to the Code 1 error. I did look under the "Details"

section of the Device Manager and it said "devide instance Id" with USB and a

long number below it. I'm telling you, I've seen screens on my computer this

weekend like I've never seen before. And I'm sure people like you know what

it all means but I don't have a clue. Your link looks like it would fix

anything easily and I have it saved for future reference.

But I'm back to square one ... no DVD-RW. I do appreciate your help

though.

Re: Missing Driver

I tried Add New Hardware and even Add New Programs. Just now when I

rebooted I got a prompt that my hardware was installed but may not be working

properly. Gee? Ya think? That was after I had tried your Line 400 and I

got really excited at hearing it hum. It certainly wasn't playing my tune.

But I put the installation CD in anyway with a hope and a prayer. I was

thinking I'd take the DVD-RW to work with me to try on my computer there,

however, to get at my modem is a huge undertaking which would involve taking

my entire desk apart and I'm sure when my boss saw me under my desk she'd be

wondering why I'm wasting time. And it would definitely take more than my 30

minute lunch. I'm going to give it another week to see if anyone here comes

up with any other suggestions and if nothing works I'm going to pack the

whole thing back up and send it to Sony. I may not have my music and picture

CD's but I still have my sense of humor.

Re: Missing Driver

Debora,

Try a Lens Cleaner disk to see if it resolves the issue. I've seen many of

drives and home audio CD players fail due to a dirty lens which a cleaning took

care of.

Re: Missing Driver

Where would I find a lens cleaner? Come to think of it, where's the

lens I'd have to clean? Honestly, I am not a moron, I only know how to work

things, not how they work, when it comes to computers. This DVD-RW was only

three weeks old before it bit the dust. At this point, I'll make that lens

sparkle (once I find it that is). Heck, I'd dance with it on Main Street if

it would make it work.

Re: Missing Driver

It's a Lens Cleaner Disk that cleans the laser lens that is in the DVD-RW

drive. They range in cost and you can get them at most electronics stores. I

have found this one to work quite well, especially for the cost.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5216081&st=memorex&lp=5&type=product&cp=3&id=1051384652107

Personally, IMHO it's a must have for anyone especially those with a PC in

dusty, smokey, etc. environments. On another note, if your DVD-RW drive is only

three weeks old and it's problematic in your PC and/or others, it should still

be under warranty for return or exchange. Although I do not use any external

drives, I myself stay clear of Sony drives, user preference.

If a CD is bad, not a problem, a CD doesn't require any drivers.

If drivers are needed/required for hardware, they can be downloaded directly

from the manufacturers support site or if need be other sites, into a folder on

the HD.

Bob,

That cleaner is strictly for CD players and will not even be recognized by a

DVD player, at least that's my experience with it.
