madon37s Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Hi all I have been having a problem with a laptop so needed to copy a few files over from the laptop onto my External hardrive! Trouble is when I plugged the EH in something from the laptop must have happened because the window is showing that the folder is empty! This really upset me as I have many thousands of pictures on my EH (because I thought they would be safer on there). I have been doing a scan on the EH and strangely enough it seems to be scanning the pictures etc that are on the EH!!!! Does anyone know how to get the folder icons back onto the window so that I can open them again as normal. Any help would be extremely appreciated as I am at the moment feeling very down at the prospect of losing all of my many thousands of pictures. Kind regards Paul Quote
KenB Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Hi Paul, window is showing that the folder is empty Is the drive showing in "My Computer" ? If it is - if you right click on the folder in question > Properties What does it say regarding the size of the folder? madon37s Posted May 21, 2011 Author Posted May 21, 2011 Hi Ken Sorry for long time replying as I never received an email telling me I had a reply! Ok, did what you said and it was showing that there was used GB's in the hardrive! I have since found out that for some reason they must have been put in "hidden files" mode. I havn't a clue how but anyway I have managed to "show" the hidden files and they have now appeared again, trouble is though the folders now seem to be very pale yellow (almost beige) when they appear in the window and when I open one of the folders the pictures are showing almost greyed out but the strange thing is that when I open a picture from the folder it then shows as it should do! the proper picture with colour etc. My question is how on earth do I get the folders and picture icons back to there original state (showing full colour). Kind regards Paul Quote
KenB Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 (edited) Hi, Try right click on folder > and uncheck "hidden" if it is there. failing that.... Try this file association fix from Doug Knox ( This is for XP ) http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/folder_reg.zip I am not convinced this will work as your files seem to be behaving "normally" for hidden files - but it is worth a try. KenB Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Hi I tried this and it seems to work .... Further to my post above. Right click the folder > Properties > General Tab ......uncheck "Hidden". Note to Randy: I tried to edit my previous post and I hit the "5 minute" ruling. This is very frustrating. I assume it is there to prevent spammers coming back to their previous posts - could it be extended to 20 mins ? RandyL Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Hi Ken. The software update must have reverted it to the default 5 minutes. I changed it to 15 minutes The reason for a limit is because it's confusing when the original poster changes things after others have read it and fail to realize the edit. I hope that 15 minutes is a good compromise. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Ken. Quote We are all members helping other members. What do I do with the file fixer after I have opened it on my computer? I havn't got a clue how they work and how I am supposed to get it to fix my External hardrive! Sorry, but I am a bit thick when it comes to computers. Thanks for all your help so far. Kind regards Paul Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Hi Paul, I haven't used the file fixer myself, however, try a right click on the external hard drive icon, and then look to see if "Scan with" is there for the file fixer. Just a suggestion till Ken gets back to you. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
