I bought an 'Apollo PCI 5.1 Sound Card' and have put it into one of the expansion card slots inside my computer. I booted up the computer and i insert the disk with the drivers and applications on it but it comes up with a box titled 'Information - Can not find audio chip' and it says in the box:

'Our audio chip provides multi-speaker surround and realistic sound effects. Due to the fact that your computer is not equipped with our audio chip, you can not avail yourself of these advanced features.

For more information, please contact your computer dealer.

My only option from there is to press the OK button.

I bought this computer on ebay and am currently running Windows 7 Home premium on it.

My motherboard is an 'Asus P5G41C-M LX'

I assumed that the sound card was plug and play and so i could just plug it in, install the drivers and play. Is my motherboard incompatible or what's happening? and what can i do?

Hi and welcome to ExTS

Did you uninstall the old drivers before adding the new card?

Suggest that you uninstall all sound drivers from Device Manager > shut down > switch off at the wall > install the new card

Windows should find the new hardware and you should then be given the option of installing the drivers from the CD.

Hi,

As i have already put the sound card in place should i:

1- shut down and switch off at the wall

2- remove the card

3- boot up and uninstall the old drivers

4- shut down and switch off at the wall again

5- put the card back in

6- boot up and try installing the drivers

If you have the card in place:

Uninstall the drivers from device manager

Reboot.

Windows will find new hardware.

Install the drivers at this point.

Ok i did exactly that and have found that i am still in the same situation. What does this box mean? Surely a chip would be inbuilt to the sound card?

Product Requirements:

  • Windows 95/98/98SE/NT 4.0/2000/ME
  • Intel Pentium 166MHz or AMD 200MHz
  • Intel, AMD, or 100% compatible motherboard chipset
  • 32MB system RAM (64MB recommended)
  • Available 32-bit PCI slot
  • CD-ROM Drive (to load driver)
  • Headphones or amplified speakers

What does it say on the disk? Does it support Windows 7?

I see your mobo is 'Asus P5G41C-M LX'.

What do you mean what does it say on the disk? and it doesn't say if it supports windows 7 or not but i assumed using windows compatibility i would be able to manipulate that?

I can't find anything on on it so I assume there are no drivers for Windows 7 on the disk. It sounds like the disk is for onboard sound on the computer and not for a card. If the manufacturer of the card does not have downloadable drivers for Windows 7 then it's probably not compatable.

The other answer may be you have been unlucky enough to have bought a sound card that just isn't working, hence why it can't find the chip.

I would send it back, then look round for a card that definitely does say in its specifications that it supports Windows 7.
