Guest James Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 I run Windows XP Professional. I have never installed Service Pack 2, because I don't have any problems with my OS, and because I have heard dozens of stories of people having problem immediately after downloaded this update. What is the concensus now ? Do the great majority of people download this update with no problems whatsoever ? I just tried to update to the current version of AVG, but it says it will not work on my OS until I do this update. Is Service Pack 2 known to cause problems ?? Thanks !! James
Guest Richard in AZ Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Re: Question about Windows XP Service Pack 2 SP2 is not only safe, but absolutely required for Windows Updates and as you found out, other safety software like AVG. You should have installed it long ago. "James" <jnipperxxx@nospamfdn.com> wrote in message news:mZ6dnTQXp4ZHO8DVnZ2dnUVZ_uydnZ2d@comcast.com... |I run Windows XP Professional. As for how many had no problems, I have no idea. I can only say that my daugher, my son, and myself installed SP2 with not trouble at all. The two of us who owned Dell machines updated the BIOS as instructed by Dell. That is the sum total of what we did extra. Jim
Guest James Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Re: Question about Windows XP Service Pack 2 Ok, but if I have never installed Svc Pack 2, should I jump straight to Svc Pack 3 ? I am a greenhorn, but I would think that 3 would automatically incorporate 2, but I could be wrong.... James

If you have an HP or Compaq WITH an AMD processor, you will want to visit this web site and install the "small tool" that is linked in the 8th bullet under the heading "...Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3?...? http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/default.aspx
Guest whittier Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Re: Question about Windows XP Service Pack 2 Unless you install the upgrades, your computer will have serious security vulnerabilities. At least 75% of XP users that installed SP3 experienced no difficulties. The key to success is to familiarize yourself with the update, and follow Microsoft's pre-installation instructions. Some useful guidelines can be found here: 'Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) Installation Guidelines' (http://www.iaps.com/windows-xp-sp3-installation-guidelines.html) If you have any problems with SP3 installation, Microsoft offers free technical support. Good luck! James;44544 Wrote: > I run Windows XP Professional.
