Guest Will Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Is there a good utility that would inspect a "Basic" NTFS volume and find deleted folders? Somehow on one of my installations the entire system32 folder has gone missing. -- Will

Windows cannot possibly work without it. If Windows still works then you're looking in the wrong place. What makes you think it's missing?
Guest Will Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Re: Utility To See Deleted Folders I know all of this already. I booted Sysinternals ERD Commander and physically inspected the drive. The system, system32, and repair folders are all missing. Now, back to the original question: Is there a utility that would inspect an NTFS file system for missing folders? -- Will "Pegasus (MVP)" <I.can@fly.com.oz> wrote in message news:eRzSTCD1IHA.4704@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > "Will" <westes-usc@noemail.nospam> wrote in message > news:5vadnZf-h-_5IcDVnZ2dnUVZ_jidnZ2d@giganews.com... > > Is there a good utility that would inspect a "Basic" NTFS volume and find > > deleted folders? Guest Pegasus \(MVP\) Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Re: Utility To See Deleted Folders There are a large number of undelete tools - use Google to search for them. Before you make the effort, keep in mind these points: - Deleting the System32 folder is quite difficult since many of its files are locked while Windows is up and running. If this was my machine then my first step would be to determine exactly how this feat was achieved. - Most if not all undelete tools work under Windows. You would need to connect the problem disk as a slave disk to some other machine before using such a tool. - My own System32 folder contains 4500 files. I think your chances of recovering each and every one of them are close to zero. I also think that it would take much less time to rebuild the system than to invest (waste?) time on an undelete effort. Guest Will Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Re: Utility To See Deleted Folders I agree it is nothing short of amazing that the machine would lose such critical folders as system32. As best I can guess, it was an O&O Defrag that went very bad. If I have to recover individual files, then I agree with you rebuild is quicker. I had hoped I could recover the entire folder, and that the folder still has intact references to its files. -- Will "Pegasus (MVP)" <I.can@fly.com.oz> wrote in message news:OHdPUUK1IHA.3920@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > There are a large number of undelete tools - use Google to > search for them.
