Any suggestions please! Familiar with internals of win2kpro but this one has beaten me! After a few probs and rebuild of system, suddenly any 16bit program(Coreldraw 5 for example) which opens with "wowexec" has an odd problem. Programs open/run fine, but when a ''open file'' command is issued and the dialog box pos up, all files on current partition are shown but the ''drive'' box is either blank or showing the current drive only. Opening up the drop box, show just a large white space. However, putting full path in the filename box is fine. Please, which file(s) handle this particular box (as different format to all other 'open' boxes) so…

I'm running small business server/server 2000. Every morning I come in and change out the backup tape. 10 minutes after I put in the new backup tape, it spits it right back out. I've tried different tape, but it spits them all back out. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?

Services and IE with problems
by Guest Clemente- 1 reply

After the last Security Updates and a reboot my W2K server is behaving strangely. On this server is running Exchange Server 2000, and all related services are working fine (email is working, outlook clients can access their mail, outlook web access is working). However, I am having lots of problems with the server: - IE does not work - even opening "About" makes IE freeze - cannot stop/start services manually - in IIS Admin, can stop "sites", but cannot start "sites" - cannot install new updates (because Windows installer does not start) - opening the "Add/Remove Programs" takes ages There are no errors in the Event Log, things just freeze. One last…

Program dominates screen, wants to always be "on top"
by Guest jbclem- 1 reply

I have a stock market real time program that is very annoying in the way that it wants to be always "on top". While I can understand needing some priority when live real time data is coming in (during market hours), other similar programs don't have this problem. What I am talking about it that if I am in another program, the click on the desktop icon...this program will pop up on top. Same when I'm switching from one program to another one (which this real time program is running). Most obnoxiously, when I'm closing down this program (it takes 1-2 minutes), I can't do anything else because everytime I switch to another program this one will pop up "on top". …

How to remove .RAR optoins from Win 2K menus?
by Guest Clueless in Seattle- 2 replies

A while back I downloaded a file that was compressed with something called RAR. I ended up downloading and installing an RAR file utility called WinRAR and now my Windows 2000 menus are cluttered with RAR menu items. For example, now in Windows Explorer, when I right click on a file name, on the little menu that drops down, no less than *four* RAR items now appear: * Add to archive... * Add to "Archive.rar" * Compress and email... * Compress to "Archive.rar" and email.... I find this a bit annoying and would like to clean up the clutter on the menus. But I would prefer not to have to remove WinRAR altogether. How can I do this…

IPP problem - page cannot be displayed
by Guest Bill Fisher- 1 reply

I am trying to set up my win2k pro machine as an IPP print server but I can't get the printer web page to load,. instead, I get an http error # 500 "page cannot be displayed". When I browse to http://printserver/printers I get the prompt to enter the user name and the password and then I get the above described error. I get this error when browsing from both the client (an xp machine) and the server (the win2k machine). Note that in my router setup I have forwarded TCP port # 631 to the win2k machine. Other web pages on this IIS server work fine. I can access them without any problems so there is nothing wrong with my IIS setup.(or so I think). If anyon…

Remote Installations Services

I have been using RIS to deploy desktops and notebooks. My problem is that while RIS works for 90% of the machines - some stop and hang at a blue screen after the image is selected. On a restart of that machine, if you try to image it again - you receive an OS Chooser v5.0 message on a black screen. At that point, the machine can not be imaged using RIS. I would like a way around it, so that I can image the machine. My "problem" machines, I end up installing XP from scratch which is time consuming. The machines that do NOT work have the same configuration as the other 90% of the machines that work flawlessly. I am running RIS on a Server 2000 SP4 ma…

Installation of 34 updates has screwed something up on log-in

Had a computer die on me yesterday (only processor fan working on plug in, nothing whatsoever else and on/off switch lights up but doesn't do anything) so I pulled out a box I hadn't used in some months It logs in in a peculiar way, with the need to CAD and then type in ADMINISTRATOR (and no password) before it will start windows. Never figured out why though it calls it some type of 'security policy'. There are two names in the lower part of the screen, DOMAIN1 and some past user. Neither of which will log on. I assume someone in a past life had this on some network but I certainly don't need this any more. On start, I used it for a few hours succ…

"Disk defragment" is not defragmenting
by Guest v- 2 replies

I have been using Adobe Photoshop elements 3.0 recently editing photos. I think this is where my problem began. I think it saves each photo, or portion of photo's somewhere. After using this program previously, I now have only 1.2 GB of free space, when I should have approx. 4-5GB of space left. Also, when I try to defragment my "C" drive, it indicates that most of the drive is red, or "fragmented". When I run the program, it does not clean the drive. It seems to go through the process, but does not really defrag any files. I believe Photoshop has files of these edited photos somewhere but I can't find them. I have searched many different options on the "C" d…

MS-Config

I just unchecked a few items under the "Startup" and "Services" tabs of MS-config. Now, whenever I open it, whether I make a change or not, I get a message after closing (unless I close by selecting "cancel") that I have to reboot for the changes I made to System Configuration to take effect. I also get a message after I reboot (or log off and log on) informing me that I have made changes to the system configuration and to check the box if I don't want the configuration utility to launch on reboot or see this message again (these messages would be normal if I had made changes). The items I unchecked in Startup were related to nVidia features and also mobsync…

Phantom DVD Drive
by Guest MS- 0 replies

Hi, I have a phantom CD/DVD drive on my fully up-to-date Win 2000 Pro PC. It's listed in device manager under 'DVD/CD-ROM drives' as: 'ZE3506G VEZ242R SCSI CdRom Device' No drive named anything like that is on nor has ever been on my PC. Also I've never has a SCSI CD/DVD drive on the system though I do have a SCSI scanner. I have deleted the drive from device manager (and from 'Computer Management'), but I get a reboot pop-up and after the reboot the phantom drive is back again! Meanwhile my genuine DVD drive now won't recognize DVDs in it. Could the phantom drive be interfering? The only thing I can think of is I got a new mobile phone last…
