Early adopter retros
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 14 replies

Hi. I've always been an early adopter of new OSs ever since DOS days. As such I have used Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, XP, and finally, Vista. I have a reasonably well spec'ed desktop, and an elderly laptop running W98SE. Just got so fed up with unnecessary OS bloat that I dropped back the desktop to Windows 2000 workstation. To my surprise I found it does everything I want or need. I run MS Office 2000, and do a lot of digital photography, so I need to organise and edit lots of image files. You know, looking at how snappy 2K runs in a Gbyte of RAM really makes me wonder why I ever went beyond it. Should have done my homework first. To all W2K users …

Why do I frequently get BSODs if I log in too fast?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 3 replies
- 368 views
When I first installed Windows 2000 a few years ago, I noticed that if I logged in within 15-20 seconds of the logon screen appearing, then I frequently got a BSOD within a few seconds of logging in. But if I waited more than 15-20 seconds after the logon screen appeared, then I never got a BSOD. For the last couple years, I have been very good at waiting more than 20 seconds to log in, and I have never seen a BSOD in that time. But today I wasn't paying much attention, and I think I logged in right after the logon screen appeared. Sure enough, I got a BSOD within a few seconds. Here is what the Event Log says for today's BSOD (I'm pretty sure previous BS…

On my WinXP computer, under Power Options, I have the option to "Shut down" Windows then I press the power button. However, on my Windows 2000 laptop, the only power options for when I press the power button are "Standby", "Hibernate", and "Power Off". How can I get Windows 2000 to Shut down Windows when the power button is pressed??? Thanks! Toni

Can you explain to me a few things about machine account password changes. This is a single forest AD Windows Server 2003 forest, running forest functional level. The default settings for machine related password changes apply. - Domain member: Maximum machine account password: 30 days - Domain member: Disable machine account password changes: Disable Do you know what triggers a machine account password to change? Would it be a Group Policy Update (60 minute background refresh)? Or would it be a machine restart? I need something definite and I am not able to find it documented. When a machine account password does change, how do you validate that…

W2K OS Desktop Icons Loading Slowly
by Guest Ron- 0 replies
There is about a 1-3 second delay before W2K's icons load on start or reboot. All icons load right away except for, My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin, and IE. Never had this problem before. I've had them all load slowly, but that was resolved with a simple defrag. Any ideas?

W2K SP4's Task Scheduler won't start because of "System error 1083has occurred." Hello. I am having a problem with an old Dell Optiplex desktop that is using old Windows 2000 SP4 (all critical updates). I noticed event logs say it has problems starting Windows' Task Scheduler service. I can't turn it on manually through GUI and command line. Here is what I saw in cmd.exe: C:\>net start These Windows 2000 services are started: Alerter ASF Agent Automatic Updates COM+ Event System Computer Browser DefWatch DHCP Client Distributed Link Tracking Client DNS Client Event Log Iap Intel® NMS Int…

Hi, I have MS Windows 2000 Windows explorer and it defaults to large icon view. Is it possible to default it at "full" for all folders so that I don't have to do it for each folder? I have a workstation at work, I'm not the administrator.

How can I confirm I can access an NTP server
by Guest Guest- 5 replies
Greetings, I really would like to see a 593 event showing up in the system log, that to me would be positive confirmation. I have bounced the time service, done a w32tm -s (it's a 2000 box), and the /querysntp returns the correct value. My 11 warnings have stopped, but I would feel better if I got some "positive feedback" so I know the new time server is actually working for these servers. On one of my servers, I got a 593 shortly after bouncing the service, and this one has the Update Rollup for SP4 installed, the other two servers don't and they don't get the 593 after bouncing the services. I don't know if this make's a difference. If anyone has …

USB drive stopped writing files
by Guest M Skabialka- 8 replies

A friend using Windows 2000 has been using a USB flash drive to store documents since her machine is quite old - this is the backup. Suddenly last week when she was trying to copy a file to it, it said that the flash drive was read-only and nothing could be copied to it. I had her do a chkdsk on it and found no errors, but she was still unable to write. She was able to copy all of the files from the drive to her computer, then I had her format the flash drive in Windows Explorer. Now she can't write anything to it. She's not on the Internet so doesn't introduce visruses, trojans etc, to her computer. Is there any other way to get the drive usable aga…

Need hotfix for KB article 843186
by Guest André Schneickert- 3 replies

All, I'm in need of the english version of the hotfix mentioned in KB article 843186 (winmgmt.exe stops responding when you run a custom WMI decoupled provider program). MS support is not able to provide this hotfix any longer, since W2Ks life cycle is over. The MS support technician suggested to ask here, so that's what I'm doing now... Anyone out there having it stored? Thanks in advance! Regards, André

NAS device - Block level access
by Guest Brad Pears- 1 reply

We are looking at integrating a NAS into our environment. One of the devices we are looking at is an Adaptec Snap Server 210. The saleperson sent me an email that indicated this devices supports block level access NOT file sharing and I should be aware of that... What exactly does this mean to me?? This device will store documents only - no databases will be stored and accessed from this device. There will be no real "locking" requirements. Users will simply be reading and storing documents from the drive. I am not 100% sure if I should be worried about this or not. Thanks, Brad
