What is the most minimum privilege needed for a user to be able to configure a wireless network interface? Must they be a member of "Administrators", or is "Power Users" sufficient, or is there something even lesser that will let them configure the interface?

I have an old (6+ years) Dell desktop with Win 2000 Pro. I think it was fully updated to about a 2 years ago, so I'm guessing SP4 is installed. It's just been too long to remember and I can't find out because of the "Problem". Haven't a clue where the install disks are or even if I had any - you know Dell. It has worked flawlessly always This computer is a stand-alone and used by my wife in our business. I've tended to ignore it for a while now, as all she uses it for is to check her emails and read the news. It is protected by Norton AV (currently out of date), Spyware Doctor (same), and Spybot. I have it set up with rather draconian settings in IE6 …

On Windows 2000 computers, the dectect slow network for user profiles is not working correctly. The gpresult is showing the policy is being applied. It works for Windows XP. The issue is isolated to any 2000 workstation. The threshold is 1 ms and 555555 kbs. Not really sure what else to try. I did some research online and found one article from microsoft that wasn't helpful. Anyone else have any ideas?

Un-nesting Files
by Guest Sid Elbow- 2 replies

Not sure how to explain this but: I have a directory tree consisting of a set of sub-directories each containing an individual file. That is, I have <rootdir> containing <dir1>, <dir2>, dir<3> ... etc <dir1> contains <file1> <dir2> contains <file2> <dir3> contains <file3> ... etc (fwiw the directories are named the same as the files they contain). Does any one know of a utility (or batch file) that will allow me to easily un-nest these files (that is pull them out of their individual directories up to the <rootdir>)? [if it were just the one tree I'd bite the bullet and could proba…

Desktop icon font colour?
by Guest h.stroph- 3 replies
Greetings, How do I change the colour of the icon font on the desktop? The current white is just too diffivult to see on a weak older back-lighted lcd. Properties | Appearance | Item | Icon - allows a choice of font, size, bold and italic, but the colour pull-down is greyed-out. I'd like the font under the icons on the desktop to be black while preserving all other current characteristics such as background colour. Changing the background colour to black or a darker colour makes the white fonts much more visible, but I find the tone to be too somber for my tastes. Changing the font colour is all I desire, but can't find out how to do it without your help. …

Hi there, First time poster here and I hope that I post the question in the right group. I am seeing the problem described in the kb article Q156484 on a Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 machines. However, the articule indicates the problem applies to Windows NT 4.0. Does that mean the problem is fixed in Windows 2000 and later? If so, how can I determine which server pack contains the fix? If not, how can I find the solutions for those 2 platforms? Another input are welcome and thanks for your time in advance. -Kin

Repair Install?
by Guest Mikey- 4 replies

I have a win2k SP4 computer that has been infested with spyware, etc. I tried running Spybot Search & Destroy & it seems to have caused more problems. When booting, the screen will flicker on & off & a box that says "C: \WINNT\System32\Command.com The parameter is incorrect" keeps poppong up. I know I don't have the disks for all that's installed on it (Timeslips, Office, Medsoft), so I want to know if I can do a repair install without losing all documents, settings, programs, etc? Kinda like what is outlined here for XP: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm WIll the same work for Win2k?

I have an old DOS program that runs in a cmd.exe window which can be made to use the full screen with Alt-Enter. This works properly on another win200 machine, but on a Toshiba laptop the full screen mode fills the width but NOT the height of the screen. I've made sure that the Properties and the Console Windows Properties of the C:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe window are the same on both machines, using Raster Fonts 8x12 and the same Layout, Screen Buffer 80x420 and Window Size 80x25. Still, the fullscreen mode on the laptop doesn't fill the vertical of the screen for any cmd.exe application, even just a command prompt. What am I mssing here, please?

Windows Time Service
by Guest Mark Blain- 7 replies

I've got an old standalone pc with a dead RTC battery running Win2K Pro. I'm migrating off of it, so it's not worth replacing the battery. Since I have an always-on internet connection, I thought it would be educational to enable the Windows Time Service and set the time on each boot instead. My firewall is allowing SNTP and I'm connecting successfully to tick.usno.navy.mil, but on startup, my event log says "Attempt to set time which differs by more than 12 hours aborted". How can I set the time on boot with the built-in service despite the large difference due to my dead RTC clock? I have a workaround using a third-party utility, but this is bugg…

DHCP tied to one of two network adapters
by Guest R-A-Waller- 0 replies

I have an Iomega NAS server. It is running Windows 2000 Server. It has two netowrk adapters. Is it possible to have the DHCP tied to only one of the adapters? I have several old machines that I have to do file back-up on. They range from MS-DOS 5.0 to Windows 98 / NT 4.0, IBM DOS, OS 2. I am no longer allowed to have them on the factury network. I want to set up a sub-network. I want the Iomega NAS to be a bridge between the subnetwork and the main network. The subnetwork is configured to obtain and IP from the main network when it was originally created. I want to continue this function on the subnetwork. What are my options? Thank you.
