by Guest adam ant fan- 4 replies

Windows 2000 Internet explorer 7 Windows keeps closing, sometimes with a "encountered a problem needs to close" message but mostly closes without warning, can happen every few seconds and is driving me crazy. I have not installed any new soft/hard ware, what can be causing this?

Wheel mouse: scroll 1 line instead of 3?
by Guest Robbie Hatley- 5 replies
I'm running Windows 2000 and using a 2-buttons-&-wheel USB optical mouse. I'm noticing that in every program I've tried so far, the wheel causes text to scroll vertically in 3-line increments. I'd really prefer 1-line increments. Is there any way to change this globally, in Windows 2000 settings? Or is this a thing which is controlled by each individual program? (If the latter, I'm annoyed, because I have yet to see a program that offers user control over this.) -- Curious, Robbie Hatley lonewolf aatt well dott com www dott well dott com slant user slant lonewolf slant

Child window opens behind main window
by Guest horst engel- 1 reply
Since a few weeks quite often (but not always!) when I click on a button which creates a child window (like selection of a file in a directory, or an alert etc) nothing apparently happens except that I cannot do anything on the main window. Actually the child window has opened, but stays behind the main window! So I have 3 choices: press Alt-F4 (which doesn't always work) or minimize all windows and then reopen them again (which does'nt always work either). The 3rd choice is to kill the program! This may happen in nearly all programs. I tried to solve this problem with Tweak UI (Prevent application from stealing focus) but it didn't work. Any suggestion? …

Problem running eecutables from hard drive
by Guest Roger Fink- 10 replies

When I try to install saved program updates to Office 97 by launching them from my hard drive I get the following message: Error: Setup could not find a drive with [xxxkb] free disk space to install the program. Please free up some space first and retry or press cancel to exit setup. As an experiment I transferred the files to a flash drive. When run from that location they installed with no problem. I then tried to install a large update to Paint Shop Pro 7 from the hard drive and I got the following message: Error: The file C:\Winnt\System32\msvcp60.dll is in use and cannot be installed. Please exit all other applications and retry. Press Ignore …

Recovery console, Update
by Guest Steph- 5 replies
Hiya! I fancied adding the "recovery console" to my boot options, just in case... Ran C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons : That did the job, but examining the files in the newly created hidden folder, C:\cmdcons , most of which compressed, revealed they are the original Windows 2000 version, whereas my running installation is now at service pack 4. Is there a need to have those files and the console itself updated ? And how would I update them ? Shouldn't the files under C:\i386 (reflecting the original CD) be updated too ? I visited Windows Update which did not seem to notice or care about this discrepancy. Thanks -- Steph (no working e-mai…

User's can't change password
by Guest MadDog- 2 replies

This is strange. Starting yesterday, we've had users whose passwords have expired try to change their passwords, but they can't. We have a password complexity requirement and when the users try to change their password, the change fails and the complexity requirement dialog box is displayed. I've verified that the complexity issue has indeed been met. We have a test user and I've verified that I cannot change the password. This user's password was NOT close to expiring. On our FSMO role holder, I've run NETDIAG and DCDIAG and both run clean with no errors. EventViewer looks clean too. No replication problems (replmon).....No Group Policy problems (no error…

Windows 2000 Very slow after logon
by Guest NonStop Johnnie- 3 replies
My system is having problems after logon. It's almost as if it is preoccupied trying to looking for and waiting for something and therefore is slow getting around to any other tasks. It seems to be helped by unplugging the network/internet cable. This is particularly evident in very slow windows explorer, non-existent Disk Manager operations, sometimes non-existant Add/Remove software operations. In looking at help files these symptoms all seem to have different solutions and I don't seem to find any common connection. I can't think of anything I've changed with the system except perhaps a java update. I use this system for editing with Avid Med…

What startup command will enforce Details view in Win Explorer?
by Guest baobob@my-deja.com- 1 reply

I’m running Win 2000 SP 4. I never want to see large icons in Windows Explorer, in any version of Windows, forever. Nevertheless, year in and year out, it often reverts to large icons. And right now things are even worse. No matter what I do, I can’t get Details view to appear by default on Win Explorer startup at all. Two possible shots-in-the-foot I’m giving myself are: - I’m running TweakUI. (The stupid thing has no Help / About, so I can’t report its version.) - My change from Win 98 to 2000 was an reinstall-over, not a system wipe-clean-n’-install-new. So what happens is: - I launch Win Explorer. Large icons are displayed. - I select View /…

DOS print to default printer?
by Guest Greg Russell- 5 replies
We have a "default" printer created (Lexmark) which works properly from Windows applications. The printer is connected via the parallel port LPT1. We have one legacy DOS application that works properly, but the print output doesn't seem to get directed to the default printer; it just disappears somewhere. "dir > lpt1" at the command prompt illustrates the problem, as no directory listing goes to the printer, nor does any print job spool even briefly. Is something special required to print DOS jobs in Windows 2000 please, and if so, what is it? Thanks for your help.

Has anyone out there had success making Internet explorer 7 work on windows 2000? I know Microsoft says it won't work and so far I haven't been able to make it, but I know there has to be something hidden probably in the ie setup file that you can change to make it work on 2000. Thanks, JM
