cant change drive tags
by Guest promicro- 9 replies

Hi to all, for some reason my Compact Drive labels changed to xm/sd and I can't change them back. the other drives in my folders give me the option to rename, and the general tab in the properties box of the other drives allow a label change but not the CD labels. I have tried this in both the folders list and the 'my computer' box. I also tried to change it in the registry with the same results. (I restored the registry) thanks to all for your suggestions, bob

WinSxS, functional under 2k ?
by Guest Steph- 9 replies

Using windows 2000 Pro SP4. After a reinstall and some cleaning, I noticed I "caught" a winsxs folder, which some research shows to be for use with Windows XP and later side-by-side DLL storage. Was this function somehow retro-fit to Windows 2000 by a Windows update (which I doubt... but safer to ask the experts) ? Am I free to simply delete the contents of the winsxs folder ? Regards -- Steph (no working email)

USERINIT.EXE - A new startup
by Guest ms- 8 replies

I normally have a very stable W2K system. This AM, I ran a utility that removes all instances of McAfee products, I didn't ever install McAfee, but the program instantly executed and was not able to be stopped. It apparently didn't find anything. But since then, I have a alert utility, and get frequent notices that USERINIT.EXE wants to be added to windows startup. I finally allowed it, rebooted, everything *seems* normal, but I am concerned, as W2K has daily cold booted fine for over 2 years w/o this startup. Below is the report on the USERINIT.EXE now in my system. I don't know if it replaced an earlier version, as I never before had occasion to loo…

CHKDSK at startup / Win2K
by Guest Riskman- 15 replies

I tried to run Error Checking (CHKDSK) on my Win2K Pro, and selected both options to auto fix file system errors and scan/attempt recovery of bad sectors. A popup window advised it would require running at startup, so I OK'd the schedule, then restarted system to allow CHKDSK to scan, fix, recover. CHKDSK proceeded thru its 5 phases, completed each to 100% with no apparent issue, but upon completing the last phase the system moved to a blue screen with the following stop error: *** STOP: 0x0000000A (0xC0001C8C, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8043832C) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL *** Address 8043832C base at 80400000, DateStamp 45ec3c8f - ntoskrnl.exe "If th…

by Guest Sirius- 12 replies

Hello Well Respected Microsoft MVPs. Did I post to the right group or should I try somewhere else? I just purchased a refurb. wireless PCMCIA card for my notebook. Netgear WN511b and Compaq Presario 1700 17XL265 Win2000 sp4. I followed instructions, installed newest drivers, put the card in when prompted. Got a strong signal and the status is "Connected to router" It should however say "connected to internet". Because of this webpages do not load. It works with a wire. The manual that I also downloaded says in the troubleshooting section is that this would be a network configuration problem, but then how come it works with a wire. I took off the firew…

by Guest Ron- 1 reply

I have an issue with an mde file: The file has permissions set as desired. When a user opens the file and closes it the permissions are replaced giving only that user, administrators and system permissions. It removes the inheritance as well. I can go in, reset the permissions and the same thing will happen. It does not matter if the user has local admin permissions or not the same thing thing still happens. Any ideas here?

Windows Process list cutting characters off the ends of theexecutables that are running
by Guest USN9AWM@gmail.com- 0 replies

Windows Process list cutting characters off the ends of theexecutables that are running I am using Nagios and nsclient to monitor an old windows 2000 box. I am using the check to pull the process list, and verify if an .exe is being executed. On one of my Windows 2000 Server machines, I get false negatives. A service is started, and the executable name is something like longservicename.exe. When I log in, the service is running. If I pull up task manager, I see "longservic" and that's it. So its causing my check to fail. Any reason Windows 2000 is cutting the process name short??

Are the (MS Mgmt Console's) Services data stored in a data or log file that's separate from the registry? Following a fresh W2K Pro installation on a solo desktop machine, I just disabled several services (that had been successfully disabled before on a previous similar installation without ill effect). This time, immediately experienced trouble upon rebooting, and want to restore or modify the Services settings outside the MMC Services module, as it's not working properly now. I thought that Services info was stored directly in the registry, but after restoring a full System State (including the registry) that was backed up just prior to making the Service…

How to do a repair/install in Windows 2000 Pro
by Guest Victek- 3 replies

I'm getting ready to do a repair/install of Windows 2000 Pro. I've done this many times with XP, but this is the first time with Win2000 and I wonder if there are any unique issues I should be aware of? Assuming the process doesn't crash can I trust that installed applications and data will be unaffected? Any advice appreciated.
