After installing the above on our exchange 2003 server, I am receiving event 4099 as follows: The run-time environment was unable to initialize for transactions rquired to support transactional components. Make sure that MSDTC is running (DtcGetTransactionManagerEx(): hr=0x8004d01b. I am also receiving a few event 4156 MSDTC errors. String message: Session idle timeout over, tearing down the session. I have searched for error 4099 and everything I have found relates to clusters. This is a standalone server. I'm trying to find out if Microsoft posts dates or time lines anwhere that says when they will stop supporting O/S's...particularly 2000 Server. I heard it would be about 2 years after 2008 Server...so maybe 2010?

DHCP Redundant Configuration Question
by Guest MPG- 5 replies
Hello folks, We've got a domain that has about 120 DHCP clients. We've got two Win2K DCs. Until recently, all of our DHCP was handled by the second domain controller. I modified the setup to provide some DHCP redundancy and have some questions. Here is the current setup: DC1 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.157 - 10.1.5.254 DC2 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.156 The overlapping scopes and mutually exclusive exclusion lists were set up based on a recommendation in TechNet DHCP best practices. This basically leaves half of range on each DHCP server. With the current setup, each DHCP server has 97 a…

Missing Administrator Level Account
by Guest Roger Fink- 4 replies

I recently received a used laptop with a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro, and no applications. I'm having a problem with it in that there is no Administrator account set up (I thought this was supposed to happen automatically during installation of the OS). Since I can only access the machine with User level privileges, I can't figure out how to create one, since the option to do this under Users and Passwords is grayed out. How do I fix this? (I don't see how any fix for this can involve the internet, since there is no antivirus program or firewall installed on the machine.)

Windows update in windows 2000 not working?
by Guest Mr Ben- 5 replies

I have two servers in my network that I am having a problem patching. I run windows update on them, and it comes up with the list of patches that need to be applied. I say go ahead and it fails on all of them and says it needs a restart, so I restart and the same thing happens. NOTES: 1, the "download size" of the patches is 0kb so apperently during one attempt or another they were downloaded? If so to where and how can I delete the information that they downloaded and get those again? 2, On one of the servers I decided to manually download and install the patches, and that worked except for 4 patches KB941693, KB944338, KB945553, KB948590. On these 4 pa…

Re: W2K Failure to Boot If I run chkdsk will that repair the missing ntoskrnl.exe? I have a computer right now started with the boot disk, can't I just copy this file from the CD to the winnt\system32? Repair vs fresh install
by Guest Lee M.- 2 replies

I am going to be swapping mobos on my Win2k machine. Last time I did a mobo swap I did a repair install. If I do a fresh install, does the process take care of partitioning the disk or do I have to boot to DOS and FDISK it? Never did a fresh install of Windows before, always did the upgrades. Thanks.

Motherboard swap

I'm currently running a Socket A mobo with a Via chipset. Just got a mobo with an Nvidia chipset. Any way to do this swap without having to re-install the OS or is it just a crap shoot? Updating all the service packs is a pain. Thanks.

How to stop connections to Microsoft
by Guest AndyHancock- 4 replies
I disabled the automatic updates because it was setting off the firewall too often (I haven't found enough details to make the proper firewall rules). There are still attempts to connect to microsoft IP addresses. What else can be causing these connection attempts? I don't use instant messaging, my browser is firefox, and thunderbird is my email/usenet reader. Thanks.

ftp throught windows 2003 firewall
by Guest Jim- 2 replies

I have a win 2003 SP2 server with IIS, FTP installed. I have unchecked the "Anonymous" authentication for FTP so users will be required to enter their id/pwd. This works fine without the firwall running. But as soon as I turn the firewall on, the user will be prompted for thier id/pwd and after a few seconds, it errors with: 425: Can't open data connection I have allowed exceptions on the firewall for ports 20 and 21. What other port(s) do I need to open? Thanks.

IE6 in Win2k
by Guest orotun@d.EUS- 5 replies

My IE6 has just started playing up - I open an IE window and it'll behave like its partially loaded, but the status bar seems to take forever to change at almost 100% loaded, which stops browsing within the window (bookmarks, etc not responding). FF works fine, its not my homepage, which I've changed to other sites. There's no other connectivity problems. I've scanned my system for viruses with multiple virus scanners / malware programs, with nothing found. Have MS screwed something up with a recent update?

(OT) Laptop Driver Installation
by Guest Roger Fink- 2 replies

I have inexplicably convinced myself that I can successfully install a miniPCI wireless card in my Thinkpad laptop. I think I've researched the problem enough so that I know what the pitfalls are and what needs to be installed (certain other driver and BIOS upgrades must be in place), but, recalling the installation of the Linksys PCI adapter in the desktop I'm using now, the instructions insisted on installing the driver first before inserting the card. Lenovo gives no such advice one way or the other, so I'm wondering if it makes a difference. The immediate question relates to the wireless card, but perhaps I can broaden the question to ask whether, as a gene…

Having problem downloading big files !! Help !!!

I am using ADSL, 2Mbit / s connection. Lately am having much difficulties in downloading big files. Downloading stops at around the point of 50 MByte or so. Just stay there, no error message, just stay there. Nothing. At first I thought it was IE that went nuts. So I tried downloading with FireFox. Same things happen. Then I tried Opera. Same thing ! If I use download manager like WellGet, the file can be downloaded, no problem. But if I try downloading large files with browsers, it just stay there, around 50 MBytes, it didn't say "error" or something, the download line still open, but even if I left it overnight, it still stays there. Dunno what t…

Hi, I have read many post there was no desktop/explorer.exe after login at all, but no similar to my case. I have W2KPRO SP4 with all updates. According task manager no explorer.exe running. Explorer is set as a shell, shdocvw.dll is in system32 folder, all accounts have at least read access to winnt tree, so does everyone. The same occured when I created as a test fresh new restricted ( power user ) account. I can run programs by Runas / profile /…

Hello, I have a task scheduled to run a on a Win2k Pro machine. It is setup to run at 3:15AM and for some reason it is executed twice. Once at 2:15 AM and then at 3:15AM. Could this have anything to do with the Daylight Saving Time? Any ideas? Thank you. Eric

Slow boot, but only in safe mode
by Guest AndyMHancock@gmail.com- 2 replies

This is the opposite of what one would expect. That is, if one is experiencing a slow boot, going to safe mode would be relatively quicker. I'm experiencing the opposite. I boot up in the normal amount of time (which is never fast enough, but that's a different issue). It is only when I boot up in safe mode that I actually fall asleep waiting for it to boot up. The task manager shows a sparse list of processes, as one expects of safe mode. What would cause this counter-intuitive result of slowness, but only when booting in safe mode?
