Win98 to 2000
by Guest Cottonmouth- 10 replies

I've been using W98 for years without problems, but it's getting so there's too many things I can't use/access with W98. My sister has offered me Win2000 so to bring me out of the dark ages. The questions I have are; is W2000 a memory hog(384meg); would it be better to make it dual bootable with W98 so if I had problems I'd still be able to fall back on W98? Are all the patches readily available for download or on CD? It's been a long, long time since I've upgraded and I'm a little nervous about jumping into it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Disable the homepage from auto appearing as desktop when active desktop is enabled?
by Guest Andrew Story- 0 replies
Hello I have numerous desktops running windows XP who's users have a policy puching out corporate wallpaper, which requires active desktop to be enabled. The same users logon to a Win2k terminal server, and active desktop (with it being enabled for the user account) gives every user the homepage when they logon. Is it possible to have this feature disabled? I think it must be in the default user profile somehow but unsure, can someone help? Thanks

by Guest MAJohnson- 0 replies

I am trying to setup iSCSI initiator on a Windows 2000 Server (SP4). I was able to setup the Targets, and persistant targets. When I try to Bind all in the Bound Volumes/Devices tab all I get is the following: \\?\storage#volume#1&30a . . . . . . . . . When I set up the initiator on a windows 2003 server I am able to see and bind the virtual drive on the target server. Any ideas? Thanks, Michael

Scanreg for Windows 2000?
by Guest John John (MVP)- 7 replies
No, Windows 2000 does not have a similar utility. To back up your registry create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) and select to backup the registry at the same time. Keep your ERD up to date, when you do major changes to your system create a new ERD. John DaffyD® wrote: > Windows 98 had a DOS utility--I think it was scanreg--for returning to a > previous good copy of the registry. Does this also come with W2K?

Computer Media Too Fast
by Guest DaffyD®- 3 replies

There's problem a problem with my computer system I've never encountered before. The whole system has speeded up. All online streaming media, video, mp3s, and wavs are all playing too fast so that everything is in fast motion and people and sound like chipmunks. Even the Windows event sounds are fast. The system itself has been speeded up since icons appear more rapidly as well, pages load faster. Has this happened to anyone? Where would I go to slow down whatever controls speed on my compter? I think this happened after I did an ASPI install. How would I slow down the system again? -- DaffyD® If I Knew Where I Was I'd Be There Now.

Problems with Viruses and Trojans
by Guest Anon- 4 replies
For three days now I have been having problems with viruses. I find stuff and remove it, (just a few minutes AVG 8.0 finally found a trojan and moved it to quarantine, and that seems to have fixed one problem), but each time I find and remove something, something else pops up, so I don't have a lot of confidence that this is the end of it. My wife bought Kaspersky with a three machine license, and anti-virus software is always very difficult to uninstall. So instead of trying to uninstall AVG 8.0, I think it would be easier to rebuild my system. What I'm going to do is format my hard drive and reinstall Windows 2000 and reinstall my drivers, SP4, the …

Product Key question
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 19 replies
- 931 views
I installed Windows 2000 on my laptop, which was just a test to see how it would run on a slow laptop. (I have both Win2K and Win98 installed). I just installed Win2K on a spare desktop computer using the same install CD. I gave the desktop a different username than the laptop, but used the same Product Code, since I intend to delete Win2k on that laptop (too slow). On the desktop, Win2K refused to accept the (SAME) product key I used on the laptop. I should mention that the laptop has NEVER been connected to the internet so that product code is not registered to MS. I carefully checked my typing and it was correct. I tried to re-enter it, but it would not…

BSOD STOP 0x0000001A from CPU test
by Guest George Orwell- 4 replies

My PC froze when I tried to watch a DVD. I ran dxdiag and it also froze the PC. So I started to check things. I ran two free CPU testers (BURNMAX and CPUSTABTEST). They run for 5-10 minutes and both give the same Blue Screen Of Death: STOP 0x00000001A MEMORY MANAGEMENT does this suggest some hardware is on the way out? Note CPUSTABTEST was only running the simple test, not one of those CPU stress/heat options. What is a "unknown device" ?
by Guest horst- 2 replies
Due to some big problem I had been forced to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows. Now Windows runs well again but now I am requested to reinstall 9 drivers of type "unknown device" , "PCI bus" and "PCI device" ! I inserted some of the CDs I have, but the drivers have not been found. The main problem is that installing a driver, Windows wants to know what type of driver I am going to install. But I have no idea what a "unknown device" is. I run Driver Magician using the backup I made 3 months ago, but nothing changed. Can you please help me? Horst

A disc read error occurred
by Guest Peter Phillips- 3 replies

My anti-virus subscription ran out. I had been going to change the program (Panda) anyway because they've stopped catering for W2K. I went for Sophos. I uninstalled Panda then - stupidly forgetting I hadn't immediately rebooted - I installed Sophos. A restart produced: Verifying DMI Pool Data Boot from CD: Boot from CD: A disc read error occurred Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart That's as far as it will go.I don't even have access to my second W2K emergency installation on HD5. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks

Print Spooler takes a large percentage of CPU time.
by Guest davidtheweb- 0 replies
I have a recurring issue with a Print Spooler on a Windows 2000 Server. A print job will get stuck and take a large amount of the CPU time. I stop the print spooler in Services, go into Windows (or Winnt) | System32 | Spool | Printers and delete all jobs in that folder and restart the print spooler. This fixes the issue temporarily, but several days later, the same process occurs. Is there a way to trace where the stuck print job is coming from, or has anyone run into this same issue? Thanks, David

Selection of graphic software for picture display
by Guest Beyond X- 4 replies

I want to know how to set up my Win2K so that a particular graphic software is selected to display a picture file (e.g. -.jpg) by clicking it in Win Explorer. Presently the bulky Photoshop is automatically selected and loaded after long wait before the picture is shown. If I can somehow change the setup so that Paint is selected, for instance, waiting time should be a lot shorter.

The drwtsn32.exe file is the one that opens when a program generates an error and you get a message saying "something.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows." If I set a program to stop this one from closing other processes, will it mess up the operating system, or is it safe to do? Thanks, JM
