New office setup, 2003 server
by Guest george821- 1 reply

Hi, we are setting up a new office. with around 20 clients and one server. We chose windows server 2003 standard edition R2 on a dell 3ghz/ 4gb. Planning to use it as a file-server for CAD files and an application (ufida). What is the suggested setup when the objective is to not allow local saving of files, but rather keep the files on the server and have the clients access them over the Lan? Best Practices? Thank you!

set password expiry to a few weeks.
by Guest Haggis- 3 replies

Is there some way i can force a group of users on the domain to have their password expire in 2 weeks without changing the Domain policy and affecting other users. The reason for this is that, for some time we have had a group of users that passwords never expire, now we want to enforce password expiry along with the rest of the domain. However, i do not want to wait for the 180 days before they have to change it. i also do not want to set 'change password at next logon' as these particular users are mobile PDA users and have access to a network PC only occasionally. So once 'change password at next logon' is set, and their device queries our mail serv…

Time format has gone incorrect
by Guest ms- 3 replies

I've never seen this in any OS before. Daily cold boot. Noticed during the day, time of day in the System Tray is 24 hour format. This is a change, Checked in Time Adjust screen, Time of day is correct as 12 hour format, Time Zone is correct, Day/month/year all OK. I used a util to check time, my system time is accurate. So the system reads 12 hour format, yet displays as 24 hour format. Advice? ms

At times, no browsing
by Guest ms- 24 replies

Normally my W2000/SP4 custom desktop runs fine. It was built with SP4 installed 3 years ago, no patches since then, daily browsing (DUN) with Firefox and Xnews newsreader since then, never *had* problems until about 6 weeks ago. I don't use MS software except for the OS, no commercial software, usually small noinstall freeware utilities, has always been very troublefree. 6 weeks ago, on daily cold boot, worked fine one day, installed nothing, don't use registry cleaners, etc. The next day, DUN was normal, Firefox opened normally, but it was not browsing. I disabled the firewall, no help, I checked seveal things, everything seemed normal. I changed…

Problems after rebooting Windows xp Professional
by Guest Bluex25- 2 replies

I rebooted Microsoft Windowsxp Professional 2000 using the CD. Unfortunatly I didnt know to save data for my drivers, and upon restart after resetting the basics my pc is slugish. Moving a window drags across the screen, scrolling down an internet page is enough to give you a headach. I went under Device Manager and found the following did not register and could not be updated. Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Bride Device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible). Im trying to find a way to update these so they can work. -- Bluex25 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bluex25's Profile: htt…

How to stop share to prompt for credentials
by Guest Carlos- 1 reply

I'm having a problem which no ones seems to resolve. I've been in few forums and no luck. Thus, I hope this forum to be my last one... it is simple... I have a 2003 Ent. SP2 box (let's call it MYBOX) which is a member in a 2003 AD domain. I have a folder which I am sharing on this member server and I want users, coming from different subnets and with PCs not joined to the AD domain where MYBOX, to be able to get into the shares without being prompted for username and password. How can I accomplish this? These are the thing I've already tried: under Configuration >Windows Settings >Security Settings >Local Policies >Security Options: …

Windows 2000 Server - Stagnant Client Web Pages
by Guest massenbk- 1 reply

My Windows 2000 Server SP4 has about six DHCP WinXP clients attached. Recently, we updated our company web site at our host ISP, but the clients behind the domain server only see the legacy web site, not the update. The server is firewalled with a SonicWALL SHOH3, but IE6 on the server itself shows the updated site. So far, the books and searches don't appear to address my problem, even though it's probably an easy fix I keep stumbling over. Thanks for taking the time to point out my errors.

auto-switch to dialup
by Guest b.jeswine- 4 replies

This w2k/sp4 machine has a hard-wired network connection that allows internet access via a router connected to a satellite connection. It also has a modem dialup connection that when active is the routed path to the internet. If the dialup fails, then the route is automatically switched to the hard-wired satellite conneection and there is only a brief interrupttion in connectivity while the modem redials. If the redial is successful the the route changes back to the dialup. What is necessary please to make it so that if I choose the hard-wired satellite connection and that fails due to transient problems such as weather interference, misalignment etc. that t…

Task Scheduler 0x80 errors
by Guest Paul- 8 replies

Hi, We have problems with scheduled tasks failing on windows 2000. A reboot solves this but we cannot get to the bottom of the problem. It's Sp4 and there's no Human Interface Devices service. I've tried making jobs with the AT command, assigning runas service and bath permissions and pretty much worked through a lot of search results. It seems to be about every 7 days it fails. Can anyone shed light on this? There is nothing in event logs (app and system). Task log attached, job names aren't actually xxxxxxxxxx lol. "xxxxxxxxxx.job" (runxxxxx.bat) Started 06/10/2008 23:45:00 "xxxxxxxxx.job" (runxxxxx.bat) Finished 06/10/2008 23:49:14 Result: The tas…

Hi there, this morning my Windows2000SP4 desktop started with the 680x480 resolution and the keyboard not running at the login window. The keyboard is ok at the bios and til the F8 start menu. If i choose the debug mode, the keyboard is still dead. I tried with a Linux live boot cd and I have no problem. I guess a problem on the keyboard drivers but the Recovery disk does nothing. Can i manually substitute the keyboard driver? Which drivers??? Help !! -- SteM
