persistent "ghost" USB device?
by Guest surface9- 2 replies
I made the mistake a few days ago of shutting down my windows 2000 PC with a USB harddrive still connected and powered up. After the PC shut down, I disconnected the USB h/d and powered it off. Now, everytime I boot up the PC, windows 2000 informs me that it "found new hardware" "USB device", and then "error installing device" and I get a yellow question mark in the control panel/system/hardware/ device Now, I tried booting up with the USB h/d connected and powered up, and it recognizes it OK, but, it still tries to install that darn "ghost" USB device also and reports the failure. So how do completely remove whatever it is that is causing windows 2000 t…

Getting Wrong Profile
by Guest jhunter@huntercomputerinc.com- 1 reply

We have one old Windows 2000 Pro (that we use once a quarter to run a database routine that we haven't yet moved to a WinXP computer). When I login (as JohnDoe), it doesn't give me my normal desktop/etc. When I look in c:\documents and setting, there are two folders. One is "JohnDoe" (which has all the correct stuff in it), the other is "JohnDoe.Computer05" (which is the one it's loading when I log in as JohnDoe). This is, and always has been, a stand-alone computer. Anybody ever see this before?

Access to Network and Dial-Up Connections blocked
by Guest Roger Fink- 9 replies

I am in a losing battle with my IBM laptop over access to Network and Dial-Up Connections (shades of HAL 9000), which it will not let me into come hell or high water from either of the two administrative profiles on this machine. I even created a third administrative profile in an attempt to outsmart it, but access to this is just blocked, period. I'm not sure if the IBM "Access Connections" program on the laptop, which does seem to work, covers the same territory, but I'd like to be able to fix this, which is the only listing in Control Panel I can't open.

Dear ALL, as all of you know, I can use a diskette in order to boot a particular disk device depending on what I have written into boot.ini. I would like to know how can I do the same way using a CD device instead a diskette, thinking to a nowadays server without floppy device. Regards Alberto Brivio

Bypassing Administrator Logon
by Guest surface9- 1 reply
I had to rebuild my windows 2000 system, and now it waits for me to logon (press the enter key) during startup. My old system went ahead and booted up to the desktop and I didn't have to logon - I forgot how I got it to do that - does anybody know what I have to set to make it go ahead and LOGON without waiting for my to respond? I am logon on as administrator and the PC in question is not connected to the internet (I bypassed the network setup).

Sharing problem over LAN
by Guest sherwindu- 1 reply

I am running Windows 2000 on two machines connected with a Linksys router. I have been able to share drives and peripherals in the past. Lately, I can no longer communicate over this LAN because I can't sign on with my usual passwords. Both computers are in the same workgroup. I cannot figure out how to change or verify the existing passwords. Any ideas on how to correct this?

Services running high and CPU usage high
by Guest Johncobb- 8 replies

Hello everybody, Lately my HD is spinning like crazy and fans too. I looked in Task Manager and I can see that services are running very high and CPU usage is high also even when I do not perform any tasks. I scanned my computer for viruses and it seams that it is clean. A few weeks ago I installed Spybot and BitDefender but I uninstalled them soon because I thought that they may interfere with eachother. I ended unnecessary processes - now running 30. I have also unticked non essential Start Up programs and Services - that did not help. To me it looks like there is something running in the background but how can I detect it ??? It must be hidden som…

Temporarily suspend/deactivate Diskeeper DkService
by Guest AndyHancock- 2 replies

I'm running Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier on Windows 2000 SP4. It was installed as admin. I'm logged in as power user, but want to turn off DkService so that the CPU can be uninterrupted for the next 20 minutes. I lauch Diskeeper as admin using Run-as, then disable DkService. However, though it uses little CPU most of the time, it still fluctuates in the amount of CPU that it uses, between a few percent to 40~50%. Why does it not suspend? I also see DkService in the Services menu. I am reluctant to suspend it because I'm not sure if that will screw things up. Some apps can be simply restarted, but some apps assume some kind of special boot-in/ login activi…

I have Windows 2000 SP4 and over the weekend my application screens and user areas have all lost thier font. It now displays symbols (like in the system information area) instead of the standard english. All of my icons are still in english and can read them with out a problem but it is all of the other areas that have changed. Even when booting the "Starting Windows display that states please wait is in symbol form. Has anyone ever seen this before? How can I correct it without formating and reloading the drive?
