Funny shutdown problem
by Guest TL07- 1 reply
I run Windows 2000 Professional on my computer. Most of the time it shuts down without any problem whatsoever but SOMETIMES it 'hangs up' --- After the window that says "saving your personal settings..." disappears, I can hear the hard drives stopping but the screen remains the same color and I can still see the cursor only I cannot move it. I have to resort to using the power supply switch to manually shut down the system, when I start the computer again everything is fine and it does not do any error checks on the hard drives. At first I thought it was the power supply's problem so I replaced it but the problem still exists. The weirdest part of all …

Five Minutes

Everyday. You're hunched at the computer, flicking the keys with the greatest of ease - or, like me, poking each stroke with the speed of a...umm...well, it DID rhyme! Everyday. You're mesmerized for hours by the wonders of Internet business - you market, you negotiate, you design, you submit, you research, you chat...a lot... Everyday. Enthralled and empowered by your cyber-independence, you plan and scheme, plot and dream. While life in the REAL world goes on around you... "Hey Mom, can I have lunch now?? It's three o'clock!!" "Huh? Whaa...yeah, five minutes, honey...lessee, click here..." Funny how the daily grind hasn't ground to a halt…

How to create a registry Key with Regedt32.exe ?
by Guest Adam Smith- 7 replies

I am cautiously attempting to insert a key into my registry but the instructions seems to miss some details. I have done this before but now seem to have lost my way, perhaps some one can guide me back on track. Below is the instruction set: --------------------------------------------------- How Do I Enable Windows Installer Logging? Windows includes a registry-activated logging services to help diagnose Windows Installer issues. This article describes how to enable this logging service. Open the registry with Regedt32.exe and create the following path and keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer Reg_SZ: Logging V…

I simply, just want to display them. So, I have a Windows 2000 Professional. Is there a way to install East Asian Languages without the CD? Will it be okay if I download the Global IMEs meant for Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows 95, or Windows NT 4.0 and not running Office XP? And yes, I did read this link: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/2kintlsupp.mspx

Stubborn Hard Drive Doesn't Want to Revert to Basic Disk
by Guest ey.markov@iname.com- 3 replies

Greetings, Some time ago I aborted a conversion to dynamic disk in my W2K Pro machine. I have attached a 250 Gb drive as slave, went into Disk Management, converted it to dynamic. Then, when I issued the same command for the first disk, the "Are you sure?" message reminded me of the drawbacks, so I clicked "No" and reverted disk 2. Problem is, ever since then disk 2 stubbornly shows as a 128 Gb drive under Disk Management. DOS tools see it properly, and I was able to partition it (32, 80, and 130 Gb), but almost every other day Windows would tell me that the third partition (the one that crosses this imaginary 128 Gb border) is corrupted, would run CHKDSK on…

Autorun.inf virus
by Guest Sid Elbow- 5 replies
My virus Scanner AVG has just reported a virus in a file that's been siting in a backup directory on my system for just about a year without being previously flagged (I guess yesterday's update got it). What surprised me was that the file reported is an application's autorun.inf which is a text file. When I opened the file in wordpad I saw this [AutoRun] open=RavMon.exe shell\open=´ò¿ª(&O) shell\open\Command=RavMon.exe shell\explore=×ÊÔ´¹ÜÀÃÆ÷(&X) shell\explore\Command="RavMon.exe -e" (I hope the strange characters in the 3rd and 5th lines show up). Is it possible that this could act as a virus/malware?

Windows 2000 (service pack 2) explorer corrupts current foldersetting when try to access a different folder Dear all, I just can't believe that there is no solution for the following problem other than switching to Windows XP or at least to some replacement for Explorer.EXE: If I open the Windows explorer with its standard setting (tree view in the left pane shows all the folders) and let it open, I experience the following problem after the Explorer has been idle for some minutes: When I return to explorer and attempt to click on another folder or a file in another folder I get the message "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop\desktop\[]\tmp is…

Status Healthy(Active)
by Guest snazzy- 0 replies

We have a windows cluster of two nodes running windows 2000 server. The SANS are EMC Clariion. A LUN was lost due to too many hard drives. After recreating the LUN, the disk management, under computer management, shows the volume status as Healthy(Active). I have not been able to add this LUN back into the cluster successfully. I notice that the otther LUNs only have the status of Healthy. What is the difference between Heathy and Healthy(Active) and could it prevent the LUN from being added to the cluster.

Switching primary IDE cable to secondary slot, and visa versa, and adding a 3rd Hard Drive
by Guest dumdedumdum- 0 replies

Switching primary IDE cable to secondary slot, and visa versa, and adding a 3rd Hard Drive On this older computer I somehow have on the Secondary IDE cable/slot the hard drive with C,D,E partitions. The Primary IDE cable/slot has the hard drive with G,H,I,J,K partitions. Don't ask me how, but F shows up (using Ztree to view it) as a mapped partition on my other computer. F doesn't show up in My Computer, although other mapped partitions do. Only two computers on my LAN. I'm now about to add a 3rd and larger hard drive and I'd like to get this all straightened out before I put it into the mix. First question is: if I move the cable so that the C,D,E hard …

DebugDiag Log Files - Can they be Deleted?
by Guest Diane- 3 replies
In looking for system drive space, I discovered several GB of Perflog(...).blg files in the debugdiag/logs/perflogs folder and 2 old post-mortem dump files in the debugdiag/logs/"crash rule for all iis_com+ related processes" folder. Can they be deleted ? More importantly, how are they being generated and can I safely turn off the process? If yes, I would appreciate directions on how to do so. This is not an area I'm familiar with at all. Thanks for your help and advice.

We lost a LUN due to too many harddrives. The harddrives have since been replaced and LUN is been recreated. The LUN shows up OK in computer management and explorer for Windows. Data can be added and deleted OK. The format is NTFS. The problem has been to get in back into the cluster. When I use the command line option: cluster . res "Disk D:" /create /group:"NCFPMSQL Group" /type:"Physical Disk" cluster . res "Disk D:" /priv Drive="D:" cluster . res "Disk D:" /priv security=Domain\Administrator,grant,f:security cluster .res "Disk D:" /on The error occurs: System error 997 Overlapped I/O operation in progress

Apps in Programs / Startup fail to launch.
by Guest baobob@my-deja.com- 3 replies

I've got Windows 2000 Professional Build 2195. However, I have had this problem on and off for years, at least since Win 9x. One or more apps named in menu Start / Programs / Startup never launches, and nothing I try works. If I click on these failing items MANUALLY (i.e. click on the icon *in* Startup), they DO launch fine. I mean, huh? Example: Yesterday, I had Windows Explorer, Excel and Firefox in Startup, but only Excel and Firefox launched on startup. Win Explorer was a complete no-show. Today, after mucking around and re-creating the shortcut to Firefox, now only Excel launches, and FIREFOX won't start. I fail to understand how an OS can be thi…

Ilomo trojan-regscan- how do I zap this thing?
by Guest Chopper- 3 replies

CA anti-spyware scan detects Ilomo Trojan in regscan.exe and tries to quarantine unsuccessfully. If I turn off auto quarantine I get a buffer over-run. When I re-scan right away, I get the same results. I can't find regscan.exe on my hard drive, either searching manually or with search function. I have everything turned on to show hidden and system files. CA anti-virus shows no infection. I'm running win2k, Sp4, update rollup 1 v2. When I boot into safe mode it takes a long, long time, and any program I try to run starts very slowly. Task manager doesn't show anything out of the ordinary running, either in normal boot or safe mode. Could the extremely slow boot…
