Logon Message error when logging on to local (non-AD) machine
by Guest E-Double- 5 replies

A Win 2000 Pro/sp4 machine cannot be logged on to, either in safe mode or normal boot, as the following message (or something to this effect) appears- "Logon Message: You cannot logon to the machine now because the domain xxx is not available." This particular machine is not and has never been part of a domain. Running a Repair from the Win2000 Install CD did not fix the problem, nor did trying to reset the Admin password with a boot utility. Ideally we would like to salvage this Win2000 install and not have to do a complete reinstall of the OS. Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. TIA ...

W2k Pro - Logon via dial-up only
by Guest David Patnaude- 13 replies

A user took a laptop home this weekend and had trouble logging on. On the next attempt, he checked to box to login via a dial-up connection even though ther is no way this would have worked. Now there is no option to logon to the domain or the local machine, only the dial-up connection. My understanding is that you would need the ERD, be able to login via dial- up, or remotely connect to the machine to correct the registry setting. We don't have an ERD for this machine, no dial in connections, and the machine says that it is unavailable for remote connection in the office. Do I have any other options to get this machine back onto the domain? Thanks, …

Using the same procedure, i.e. pressing the <tab> key on the Windows XP DOS shell will expand for more characters to complete my typing. Please help to fix my Windows 2000 DOS shell tab key problem. only some IP clients fail with gethostbyname: unknown error, butbrowsers & nslookup fine... Greetings On Windows 2000, using putty, or the flashfxp ftp flient, we started getting the message, "gethostbyname: unknown error" when attempting to connect to any host, using fqdn, or ip, same error results. This just started out of the blue, and was not an issue before. These clients had worked fine for years. The strange thing is that from the same machine, we can access any web site via any browser. Also, when using the command prompt we can ftp into the any site that flashfxp could before. nslookup works fine too, making it even stranger, is it som…

File Ownership
by Guest Triage- 0 replies

We have several GB of used space unaccounted for on one of our volumes on a W2K server. When the dir tool is run with the /Q switch, a line of 3 periods (...) appear where the owner entries should be. Is there a solution for this? Also, instead of dir, I'd love to use the fileowners.pl tool. However, I cannot seem to locate it within any of Microsoft's resources. Please advise. Thanks! -- "I enjoyed my youth so much that I decided to bring it along with me." -G.C.

Does disabling a disk drive keep it powered off?
by Guest zeke7- 0 replies
I want to minimize wear & tear on a few internal hard drives in my computer that I access only occasionally. I see two options available: have Power Options turn off hard drives after [x] minutes, or disable those disk drives in Device Manager (and enable them only when I need access). Currently am using the turn off hard drives power option, but a number of programs such as Acrobat tend to fire up these sleeping drives even when I'm not requesting access to them. Question: does disabling a disk drive in Win2K keep it powered off, or does it continue to spin and generate heat?

How to disable folder sharing?
by Guest zeke7- 2 replies
From Win Explorer properties, Sharing tab, I can select and apply "Do not share this folder" (for my entire C: drive). But when I reboot, this setting reverts to the "Share this folder" setting. The same is true for other hard drives I have installed. How can I make "Do not share" permanent? If I try changing the share setting in Computer Mgmt\Shared Folders \Shares, I get a MMC message saying "This share was created for administrative purposes only; it will reappear... after rebooting." I'm running W2K SP4 on a stand-alone system using a LAN connection for internet access only (no other network connections set), single partition on all drives, and simply w…

Print window problem
by Guest C. Moore- 5 replies

When I go to print from OE, (and some other programs) to my HP DJ 9800, a window comes up with information like select printer, quantity and other chck off points and the print button at the bottom. The window is vertically larger than my screen image with the result I can't get to the "Print" button. There is plenty of empty space in the window but no way that I can find to shrink it. There is no part screen window button in the upper right corner. It does not respond to putting the cursor on the edge. Suggestions? C. Moore

moving to a new disk
by Guest Bill H.- 5 replies

I'm changing to a different boot disk. I used Ghost to create an image file of the "old" hard drive, and then to put that image onto the new drive. However, I can't log into Win 2k any more on the new drive. I get the logon screen, enter the info, and it just shuts down. If I try safe mode, after trying to log in, I'm taken back to the login screen. What's going on? Thanks. -- Bill

Continuous Reboot
by Guest chickybabay- 2 replies

Hello All, So my Compaq Presario 5000 (running on Windows 2000 Pro) has been continuously rebooting for the last couple of days just after the system is loaded. I am able to access safe mode without this happening, so I disabled automatic restart on system failure in order to be able to see the associated stop code. What I was given is: 0xC000001E (0xC0000044, 0x8049FD5B, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) This is about the extent of my technical abilities/ know-how, and I am unsure what this stop code refers to or how to proceed! I would be most appreciative for any suggestions or guidance on how to resolve this problem. * A little background that may or may no…

Hi all, for the past week I cannot back up my system without the system freezing up. I have been using Disk Image 7 for several years with no problems but now it halts the system after a minute or two. I've tried running Norton Utililties, sfc /scannow, RegCleaner, and my antivirus with no change and there are no other problems with the system. I don't know if it is DI7 or Windows 2K but I get the following error message on the dreaded blue screen: Stop 0x000000B8 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) a wait operation, attach process, or yield was attempted from a DPC routine. Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced I've got the following message when the system boots: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced " which I realize means the registry is hosed. I've renamed System.Alt, but I get the same message. The Repair copy is over a year old, so it's missing lots of Windows updates. The wierd thing is that I can't get into the installation on C: from the Win2K CD to repair it, Windows cannot see it. If I boot into my rescue installation all the disks and files look fine, chkdsk runs OK and all…
