Where's the error log?
by Guest dumdedumdum- 1 reply

Occasionally I'll get an error messsage such as this one today: Under the headline of "Program Error"... "D4.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created". Of course when this happens I want to take a look at the error log to find out what caused the problem so I can prevent it's reoccurence. But there is nothing else in the error window, no way to track it down, the only clue is the name of the offending .exe file. Any ideas for me on this, is it a Windows 2000 error or generated by the offending program. I'd guess it's a Windows 2000 message since the format is always the sam…

Windows 2000 Pro reboots after shutdown
by Guest hemlockgrove- 1 reply

Running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on Pentium II 233Mhz. All storage peripherals are SCSII. After installing older version of Backup Exec (V4.0 (OEM)) that came with Seagate tape drive, whenever I try to shutdown, it goes thru normal shutdown process and then reboots rather than powering down the computer. If I go to Control Panel | Power Options | APM tab, Enable Advanced Power management checkbox is checked. Unchecking that does not show "it's now safe to shut down computer", but still reboots. I know that I had this same version of Windows 2k pro install with same Backup Exec running & it shut down & powered off properly, although the sequence of ins…

Hard Drive Replacement
by Guest Norm Cook- 12 replies

Hi experts: I have 2 physical internal hard drives: c: 30GB single partition - operating system d: 80GB single partition - data Have ordered a Seagate 320GB. My plan: 1) copy everything from d: to my usb external & delete all folders/files 2) copy everything from c: to d: 3) shutdown & install the 80GB drive as master (c:) and the new 320GB drive as slave (d:) Is this doable or will I have to do a clean/reinstall windows etc on the 80GB. If this plan won't work, I will likely just leave the c: drive as is and replace the d: (80GB) with the new 320GB drive. Thanks all--

What is the best way to wipe a hard drive, loaded with Vista, clean so that I can install Windows 2000 on it?? Do I just let the Windows install disk clean and format it?? Or is there some mystical hocus-pocus that needs to be performed?? Thanks. -- The Seabat GoogleGroups filtered with extreme prejudice.

Lost my Generic Text Printer Installation
by Guest George Hester- 8 replies

Hello. I was having trouble setting my default printer to something else besides the Generic Text Printer. I finally got my normal printer installed and tried to switch the default printer to that and away from the Generic Text Printer but it just would not work. So I decided to "delete" the Generic Text Printer and that is when the troubles began. It turns out I should have "uninstalled" the Generic Text Printer. As it is I wanted to put the Generic Text Printer back in but now it will not install. I get an error. And so it will not appear in Printers off the Control Panel. So now I am stuck. Is there a way to manually uninstall the Generic Text Printer? Maybe …

Can not shut down or restart computer.
by Guest Ward- 5 replies

Hi. I have a windows 2K Pro machine with all of the latest patches installed. I can not restart or shut down the machine. If I choose to restart or shut down, windows goes thru it's normal routine and closes everthing and then shuts itself down, however the computer will not turn "off" or "reboot" after this step. All that is left is either a black screen or a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. In order to shut down I have to press and hold the power button. I checked the even log and couldn't find anything telling. Perhaps it's a bios setting? Anyway, pressing the power button to shut down is not the solution I'm looki…

Windows 2000 server - $Recycle.bin
by Guest Blaine- 2 replies

Hello everyone, I have a windows 2000 server that is acting as a file server. It has two volumes C: (system volume) and E: (data volume). Both the C and the E volume have the normal "recycler" system folder. On the E volume, however, in my home directory, there is a file called $Recycle.bin. What is this file doing, and why is it located here? Does anyone know? The bigger question is this, is it safe to delete this file? It is 9.6 GB, which would be nice to have available for other system activities.... Any info will be appreciated.

Hi, I am looking for a utility that could track the historical development of my harddisk. I know "Treesize"... that's basically a nice tool, but lacks a historical database. "DiscScout" is pretty nice... but I wonder if there is anything else that I could evaluate ? thx

Hi guys, Does anyone know how to permit Non-Administrators to change network configuration on Windows 2000? I'd like to give end users (a member of Users group) minimum permissions. Regarding as Windows XP or later, we have only to add users into "Network Configuration Operators" group. But we cannot do that on Windows 2000. Any comments would be much appreciated Thanks in advance, - Yasuhiko

Need to delete unmanageable Badmail directory 1 2
by Guest Charles Lavin- 31 replies

Hi -- I'm trying to clean up an Exchange 2000/Win 2000 (SP4) machine prior to a migration. This server is massively bogged down and almost out of disk space. One of the biggest issues is an Exchange Badmail folder that has what are probably millions of files. It doesn't seem like the prior IT manager ever cleaned out this folder, and this machine bounces back a ton of spam a day. Any attempt to open Badmail from Explorer usually results in Explorer hanging. Actually, you won't even get that far -- opening up its parent folder usually hangs Explorer. I navigated to the Badmail folder from a command prompt. I let a dir call scroll for about 20 minut…

The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program Click on cancel to debug the program When this occurs I have the choice of either logging off or rebooting. New Install - Lost Data
by Guest HuggieJ- 8 replies

Long story, short - After getting the NTLDR missing error, and trying many different repairs, I decided to reinstall Win2k. As instructed, I made a different folder with the name winnt2. I've reloaded all the updates, etc. and got the system back to usable again, but have lost all the user data that I had on the sytem. My questions are: 1) did I truly lose the data, or is it on somewhere I just can't seem to access? 2) can I access this data and move it into the new install Sorry for the ignorance. I should have tried harder to repair the NTLDR problem, but ran out of patience. -- Regards, HuggieJ

Downgrading an XPmachine...need utility...
by Guest TestTurtle- 5 replies

That analyzes the hardware and sets pathways to manufacturers. I have a damn gateway product that keeps rebooting after a bugcheck with XP. eMachines model W3118 I used to use Aida32 and used it to get the proper nVidia video driver for W2kP but aida is an older product and the author has gone commercial, going to the Everest team. There is HWiNFO32 but it is shareware. Being older aida32 can't identify all components, placing 'unknown' it catagories where it doesn't recogize the hardware. Isn't there a freeware solution out there anymore? Thanks.

Were are the install files for Win2K?
by Guest misterrogers@no-email.com- 4 replies

When I bought my computer it came with a registered version of Windows 2000 installed. I did not want to use Win2K at that time. I have always used Win98 and I just unplugged the Win2k harddrive, which was only 10 gigs anyhow, so I had no need for it. I installed a larger harddrive and installed 98 on it. Recently I was having some hard drive problems, so I plugged in that Windows 2K drive to determine if the problem was my hard drive, or something else. It was the hard drive, so I was stuck using Win2k for a few days until I got things repaired. In the process, I got to like Win2k, but I also want to keep using Win98. Thus, I want to make a dual boot …

Win2k discs
by Guest bonkers2c- 2 replies

I'm setting up a donated PC for my mother-in-law who is the administrator of a private day school. It was loaded with Win2K Pro from the factory (I have the product key) but upgraded to WinXP. Unfortunately, the donators did not (and do not have) the original install discs or anything. I'm not going to use my own install CDs for XP, and if I had a copy of win2K, I could use the product key assigned to the box. Is there any place (or user) that can sell/can donate a copy of Win2K? E-bay is running them for $150+, and honestly, the PC isn't worth that cost; however it is a definite upgrade from the Win98 AMD K62 that she is using now.

Mixer Device
by Guest Roger Fink- 4 replies

I'm having a problem with an application, but I suspect it's an OS or hardware problem, so hopefully this is the correct place to solve it. On my W2K desktop computer, I have a program for digitally recording and cleaning up analog audio sources such as cassettes and vinyl ("Golden Records" from NCH Swift). At the start of a conversion, a wizard appears. In the box where the record level is set there is a click bar, "Open Windows Record Mixer". But when I click the bar I get an error message: "There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install mixer devices from the Add/Remove hardware wizard in the Control Panel". Trying to follow through on the…
