How to automatically start performance logging?
by Guest Alfred Falk- 2 replies
I am monitoring certain performance counters on a number of servers. I want it to start and stop at particular times on a regular schedule. In Server 2008, there is a fully functional scheduler built in to Performance Logs properties, so no problem there. In Server 2003 and Server 2000 the scheduler is essentially one-time-only or manual start. In Server 2003 (and XP) there is a command-line tool "logman.exe" that will effect manual control, so the problem is solved there by setting up a scheduled task. But I'm stuck with one Server 2000 system. I tried copying logman.exe from 2003 to the 2000, but that doesn't work. Anybody have any suggestions? …

Now, i'm having problems running such applications... Any ideias will be appreciated. Thanks, Nuno Gomes

Restricting Local User Account
by Guest AJ- 1 reply
Hi folks I need to create a local account on a standalone server (non domain member) which will have the ability to create local user accounts, but not mess with the administrator account (thinking member of power user group here). In addition to this I need to make sure that this user cannot browse the network in anyway and only be granted specific permissions to certain directories. The permissions to the directories can be performed by locking down with NTFS permissions but I cannot find a way to disable network browsing without messing with the server service which is required for user account management. I need to hide all network servers/domain from thi…

Hope This Isn't OT
by Guest Dave Patrick- 6 replies

FYI; To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. (Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied W…

Taskbar - how to move?
by Guest Blithe- 4 replies
W2K Help says - to move the taskbar: Click an empty area on the taskbar, and then drag the taskbar to a different location on the desktop. However - that never works for me. I prefer it at the bottom of the desktop but it jumps on occasion to the right side where I cannot drag it back. How do I get it back and lock it? (In the past, it jumps back to the bottom at random. Only once or twice I can recall that it will drag back but maybe that occurs about one out of 100 frustrating attempts - so I just live with it) Thanks - Blithe

My company is cutting cost. We want to setup a dial-up server. We have a maximum of 5 concurrent users. If I install 5 internal modems on Windows 2003 server, will 5 users be able to dial in at the same time? Do I need 5 different phone numbers or one phone number? Do I configure RAS on Windows 2003 server? Do you have any suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Browsing stopped
by Guest ms- 2 replies

W2K/SP4 Firefox, DUN I rarely install a freeware utility, so my machine is normally trouble- free. The only MS program I use is the OS, else is freeware. I do not believe this is a patch issue as I have run in a fairly unpatched situation on many machines for years with no issues, due to careful browsing. In a recent week, I had installed nothing, there was (AFAIK) no excitement at all on my hard drive. I shut down after cleaning, each evening. The next morning, went online, started browsing as usual, after an hour, it stopped browsing. DUN properties were normal, connection was normal, same Firefox version I've used for 6 months. I rebooted, norm…

Changing Registry Size
by Guest John John (MVP)- 16 replies

Please adjust your clock and or Timezone, you are posting in the future. It seems to me like the limit is set pretty high. Usually when you get a Registry Size Limit warning an increase of 1MB is sufficient. If you set this limit too high it may cause problems with the way the memory pools are allocated, it's a long complicated story, suffice to say that you should not go crazy with the Registry Size Limit. What is the current size of your registry? Please do not use registry cleaners on your Windows 2000 installation! These cleaners do more harm than good, you have worked long and hard to set your machine to your liking and to have it purr like a k…

Question about backgrounds
by Guest twilson148- 2 replies

There is the background for the desktop, which is set by right-clicking the desktop, selecting properties, and setting a wallpaper for the desktop. What determines the background/wallpaper that is there behind the login dialog box (like for example if one selects screen saver password-protected. Then, in that case, I have a background, and I don't know where it came from. More accurately, I know where it came from (I remember selecting the image), but I don't know how I set it or how I can change it. -- Tim Wilson
