Laptop HD upgrade, NTLDR is Missing!!
by Guest Stephen- 10 replies

I have a Compaq Evo N600c laptop, with Windows 2000 Pro. The existing 30GB HD gave me a scare the other day when the machine started and wanted to scan the drive for errors. It had previously shutdown normally. The scan showed 32K of bad sectors, so I thought it time to replace it. The original drive was a Hitachi Travelstar, but I could get an identical new one, so I got a Hitachi Travelstar 60GB drive instead. A sector-by-sector copy was taken using Ghost 8.5, and this was put onto the new drive. When mounted in a USB casing the new drive functions fine, and all the files in the new drive are accessible. However the laptop will not boot from it. I have …

Hi All, We are in the process of setting up a complete new Infrastructure Server 2003/XP clients. The existing infrastructure setup is as follows – Main Site: Hosts the PDC and a further 25 servers and is connected via the cloud to a satellite site. Satellite Site: 9 Servers (Including the BDC) connected to various router and hubs. Scanner- Plotter are networked and used by a number of PC’s. I need the Scanner and Plotter to be retained as legacy equipment as they cannot in their current status be attached to the new system because they have not been approved by the accreditors and pose a possible security risk. I give support to a mixed Windows 2000/2003 network. I have a problem with preview pane and proprieties. The network is consisted by a Windows 2000 Server Domain Controller and a Windows 2003 Standard R2 member server. All clients are XP Pro. Many users use Terminal Services to the Windows 2003 Server if they have to work outside the office from home. The problems I’m having are 2 but really annoying: 1) When you right-clic a folder shared by the domain controller (Windows 2000 Server) and choose “proprieties” the dialog takes like 30 minutes to popup. This only happens when you want to see proprieties from a network share, but locally there’s no is…

All I get is a blinking cursor. Here's what happened: Just finished a fresh single-partition NTFS-format and Windows 2000 SP4 install on a Maxtor 80gb IDE drive, fully Windows-Updated it, and loaded up a suite of programs. During the numerous reboots required, it always booted fine and everything was running smoothly. From the C: drive Properties/Tools menu in Explorer, ran Error checking (with no switches); it reported no problems. Then ran Defragment in analyze mode. It reported bad fragmentation, so I booted into Safe Mode (for access to as much of the disk as possible), deleted as many temp files as I could find (Temp Internet files, \Docs & Se…

Multiple language problem

Hi, I am running Windows 2000 Server on a PC I use for creating applications using a Human Machine Interface development package called "WonderWare". A while ago, I was planning on creating an application that was going to go to China. I can't remember exactly how I did this, but now, when I go to Control Panel | Regional Options on the General Tab, my locale is set for English (United States), but below that it says that my "system is configured to read and write documents in multiple languages." Below this, I have checkmarks next to both "Western Europe and United States" and "Traditional Chinese (Default)". These are both grayed out. I try selec…

4 CONSECUTIVE CORRUPT DISK DISASTERS WITH WIN2K
by Guest zeke7- 21 replies

Am consistently getting a corrupted C: drive on my desktop PC computer running Windows 2000 SP4 with latest updates, firewall/virus etc installed. At least 4 crashes / complete formats/reinstalls in as many weeks. Same standard hardware & software (other than the latest Windows Updates) as when it ran fine, for years; do have many new files for My Docs, however. Tried installing on different hard disks, do a slow NTFS format beforehand, etc. Recovery Console and Emergency Repair Disks have consistently been unsuccessful in salvaging the installations. A detailed description of SW/HW/processes would be overly long; the following is a summary in the h…

Windows 2000: missing CD/DVD drive
by Guest Turkk- 6 replies

I've posted this before but it seems to have gotten lost. Neither the CD-drive nor the DVD-RW drive are showing in Windows Explorer, & they don't work. I've recently uninstalled several programs (including iTunes), but don't know exactly which uninstall caused the problem (if that is what caused it). Have tried all the usual troubleshooting, uninstall/reinstall, etc. I see several posts for a solution to this problem for Windows XP, but can't find one for Window 2000 Professional. What do I need to do? If it involves using Regedit, please direct me to proper steps for backing up, restoring, etc. Many thanks. -- Turkk

It runs Exchange, File, Print, Antivirus, etc. We recently started experiencing freezing issues on this server. More specifically, the server is locking up about once a day. It appears that just before the server locks, we see the following message in the system log: Event Type: Error Event Source: Server Event Category: None Event ID: 2510 Date: 12/10/2007 Time: 7:19:40 AM User: N/A Computer: FTC-MAIN Description: The server service was unable to map error code…

Greetings -- I been running with Trend Micro Security 2007 for almost a year now ( I came out in 2006 ) on or about Nov 3, a regular automatic trend update happen -- but this time I had to reboot -- after the reboot, all hell brook lose. nothing worked. was getting weird message that the was a shortage of some sort of space, I think the message had the word quota in it. DLL were being reported ad being invalid window images ... It seemed to me that this trend update messed up the "redirector". I was able to get msconfig to run, thus turning off all the trend micro services. I then rebooted and was able to use the manual un-install process in pctools. …

Strange 137GB problem on Windows 2000
by Guest Erik- 4 replies

Hey there, I have a windows 2000 advanced server computer running with 2 drives in it, one (the one smaller then 137GB as a boot disk with windows installed on it, the second one is bigger then 137 GB (200GB). It's an old computer so the BIOS doesn't support a 48-bit LBA and there aren't BIOS upgrades that do support it. So I bought a IDE/SATA raid controller with a PCI slot, after I connected the drive the windows 2000 advanced server installation cd (including SP4) could easilly recognize the disk at full size so I formatted it into 1 partition. After creating the registry key 'EnableBigLba' all worked fine and windows could recognize the big HDD.…

How to install Win2000 on e: after installing XP64 on c:
by Guest Zootal- 7 replies
I have XP64 installed on my c: partition. I want to install win2000 on my e: partition, which is a 30GB ntfs partition. I did so, and 3/4 through the install it locked up. I rebooted, and it was unable to continue the install. So, I booted back to XP, and much to my surprise, I get a Win2000 could not start error. My boot.ini seems to be intact. As near as I can tell, the Win2000 install to e: wiped my XP install on c:. Is this a known issue with win2000? Was I just lucky (un)? I'm thinking I should install Win2000 first, then XP.

I have been following the links to Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 (w2ksp4.exe) but it always seems to lead to a Windows Server 2000 tech support page that has no indication of any place to download Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4. Hello, Win 2000 sp4, Pent 3, 850mhz, 512mb ram. I have 2 drives, system drive C: is a 40gb and storage drive D: is a 160mb. Problem starts like this. The other day while recording some audio, I noticed some sluggish, skipping action. Playing back that material was the same. I then opened a pre-recorded wave file and the computer play perfectly. So I cleaned the D: drive by deleting some files, scanning for viruses, adware, malware, etc. Then I did a chkdsk which completed without errors and tried to run a disk defrag. I received a message saying defrag could not be performed or something to that effect. I did not search the MS Knowledge as I just shut …

Can't access add-remove

I am unable to access add-remove programs. When I click the icon in the control panel, the add-remove box comes up but there is no information inside it. To get out, I need to reboot; ctrl-alt-del only closes the control panel itself. The above is true for both of the administrator profiles on this machine. How can I fix this?
