Can I use windows XP dbnmpntw.dll in Windows 2000?
by Guest pedestrian via WinServerKB.com- 3 replies

My company have a Windows 2000 which have a VB6 application connecting the Windows Server 2003 R2 with SQL Server 2005 Standard. Recently, the Server PC was formatted and same OS and SQL Server were installed. However, the VB6 app that access the Server thru named pipes cannot work after the format. It gave "[DBNMPNTW]Connection broken" errors. So I tried to replace the Server dbnmptw.dll with older version from Windows XP (version is 2000.85.1117.0). Could I use this same dll file in the Windows 2000 workstation? Thank you very much! -- Regards, Pedestrian, Penang. Message posted via WinServerKB.com http://www.winserverkb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/w…

Hello, I really hope someone can help me out with the problem I am experiencing with my Windows 2000 Professional. I recently installed the free edition of AVG anti-virus. After updating the virus definitions it scanned my system and found many viruses which it then deleted, moved to the virus vault and cleaned. After re-starting windows it starts up as normal without any error messages or problems but after signing in at the logon screen it says "windows is starting" and then, after a few seconds, instead of starting, the message changes to "windows is saving your settings" and then it takes me back to the login screen as if I have logged off! …

Animated gifs died

Hi, Animated gifs have stopped working on the web pages I visit. I've tried three different browsers, Internet Explorer, Mozilla as well as Netscape, all the same, won't run gif animations. I can run them using an animation program like Gif Construction Set though. I went into my control panel/Internet Options and switched off play animations, rebooted then switched them back on and rebooted again, no luck yet. I haven't loaded any new programs in a very long time. Thanks! ---==X={}=X==---

Still unable to connect to XP
by Guest Ian D Samson- 6 replies

My main computer is running Windows 2000 Pro SP4. My standby/new machine runs XP Home. While I can see the computer in the list of computers, I cannot connect to it because it says it is unable to connect to the workgroup 'home' - the name I have given the workgroup on both machines. Both machines are connected via 100Mbps Ethernet Cat5 cable to a router, the router is connected to the internet via ADSL line. I have set up each Drive C for sharing and set the correct permissions, but when I type \\<pc name> on my machine, I get an error, and when I type \\<mymachinename> on the other PC, I also get an error. Is there something inherently wrong with tr…

We have a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain. Users login with a domain account. Several of our workstations (Windows 2000 Pro SP 4 and some Windows XP Pro SP2)are logging in to find that their profiles settings are missing. We do not use roaming profiles. On investigation, I find that under the C:\<system folder\documents and settings\, a new folder is created with the name username.domain (i.e., johnsmith.abc.com). The original "username" folder still exists. I can correct the problem, and I had done that repeatedly. However, I would like to see if there are any suggestions on preventing the loss of the profile in the first place. We have ha…

erratic mouse in win2000 on old vaio laptop
by Guest stefmazurek@gmail.com- 0 replies
- 239 views
I have an old Vaio Laptop PCG-F650 and most of the time use an external compaq PS/2 mouse through the 9-pin connector in the back instead of the touch pad. The external mouse works fine, but whenever I boot the computer anew, the mouse freaks out only by touching it; it's all over the screen. Then, I have to unplug the mouse, touch the mouse pad a couple of times; the pointer eventually stops going erratic. After this procedure, I can plug the mouse back in through the 9-pin and the mouse works fine. Now, I have to repeat this procedure everytime I shut-down windows. I tried disabling the touch pad, but this does not help. Anyone has an idea? I'd appreci…

Compress Old Files utility is gone
by Guest janastarr- 3 replies
Hello- I have a laptop with Windows 2000 Pro loaded on it-I've noticed that when I use the disk cleanup utility that it doesn't have 'compress old files' or 'old chkdsk files' listed on the submenu. Since I bought this laptop used, I'm assuming that a previous owner had this option removed via the registry. Is there a way to get these options back using the Windows 2000 CD or does this involve tooling around in the registry? Thanks for any response.

Where should I post my question?
by Guest Clueless in Seattle- 4 replies

A few days ago I posted a question that has so far garnered no responses. So I'm wondering if there might not be a more appropriate group for my question. I'd be grateful for any and all suggestions on where I could post. Here's the question: "Can I filter items in Start Menu Documents list?" "November 29" "The Documents list on the Windows 2000 Start Menu is quite a handy way to access the files I use often. But the problem is that when I play MP3s, each MP3 ends up on that list, and soon the MP3s have crowded out all of my useful files. "Is there a way I can tell Windows to ignore my music files when I play them and to not add them to the Docume…

Alternate data file location
by Guest Roger Fink- 4 replies

Apart from the issue of who will be able to access the data, is there any reason why a large body of data (music collection within a main folder and subfolders) can't be created in the root directory at the same level as Documents and Settings? I'd be doing this for convenience, but I also recall that there was a capacity issue in Win98 with regard to the amount of data that could be placed under My Documents.

Hello, does anyone know how to make Microsoft Picture (or Photo?) and Fax Viewer the default for opening pictures that I receive in emails? When I try to save or open a photo, it downloads and then my photo program opens it. How do I change this? I've looked through "Setting Program Access & Defaults", but find no reference to photos, only music, etc. Thanks in advance! Denise

by Guest Dave Onex- 2 replies

Hi Folks; I need to use the dskcache.exe file to fix an issue with Microsoft's Windows 2000 O/S (Slow Disk Performance with Write Caching Enabled) The problem is that there does not seem to be a link to the file anywhere on the Microsoft site. I also can't seem to find a link to contact them for a hotfix via the Internet anymore. Can someone post up this 10K file for me? It would make my life a lot easier :-) Thanks! Dave

Setting window startup position
by Guest rubyjack- 3 replies

Most of my windows programs start in a nice neat place. However, I have some bad boys that don't. They start in positions that obscure things like the minimize, maximize, close buttons; or the side or bottom scroll bar is not visible; and so on. Is there a way to set the startup position of a programs window to where I want it to be instead of where it wants to be. Frustrated, Dan Hacker -- ---------- Madness takes its toll. "Windows - Delayed Write Failed"
by Guest Robbie Hatley- 3 replies

I got an email advertisement from Disney about their free online game, "Pirates of the Caribbean", so I decided to check it out. I made myself a pirate and started going through the preliminary, tutorial phases of the game. Pretty cool game... BUT... about twice per minute, i kept getting message popups, I'm presuming from the Windows 2000 operating system itself. These were 9" wide, 2" tall rectangular message boxes, and their title and text was allows one of these two, alternating: Title Bar: Windows - Delayed Write Failed Text: Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \DeviceHarddiskVolume10\$Mft. The data has be…

I have a problem with two of the users experiencing a problem with microsoft word and their docking station intermittenly. The problem lies in that when he is using his laptop and running microsoft word, every once in awhile the word program freezes and when he is typing turns out to be gibberish afterwords. the rest of the document is fine but whatever he is typing at the time gets screwed up. my question is this a connection problem to the laptop from the docking station or is it more of the laptop maybe having a bad sector on the hard drive as other programs are running fine from what he tells me.
