Laptop Keyboard Problem
by Guest Roger Fink- 2 replies

I'm in the process of setting up a ThinkPad R40 W2k laptop for a friend of mine. I've created a new administrator level profile for her and in general things are going OK with the exception of this keyboard problem Certain letters on the right side of the keyboard have numbers or symbols on them and it's the numbers and symbols that are being displayed when you press the keys. For instance <explorer.exe> appears as <ex*36rer.exe>. This can be corrected by pressing shift/num lock after you log in but she shouldn't have to do that. It should default to a normal keyboard without that step. The other profiles on the machine don't have this problem. I'…

File extension association doesn't work - workarounds?
by Guest inews@questuscorp.com- 1 reply

I run a program which uses a particular file extension (say *.abc). Opening files from within the program is perfectly functional. However, by default, there is no registered file type for *.abc. When I register the file extension to the relevant executable, and double click on a data file, nothing happens. The software vendors cannot help, not even to suggest the workaround which I eventually stumbled across. There is a workaround - add the executable to the "Send To" list, right click on a file and the file opens inside the program as hoped. The other workaround is to use an automation program, but is rarely applicable. I do this hundreds of times a …

Missing ".exe" extension on download
by Guest Bob Howard- 9 replies

Hi, My daughter gave me her old W2K laptop, and I'm trying to download a program "xxxxxx.exe" from a web site. The file downloads OK, but without any file extension ... is just downloads as "xxxxxx" ... I've poked around and cannot figure out what's wrong. I've tried the same download on both Win/XP and Win/Vista computers, and they work fine. Is there some sort of option I need to set to have the ".exe" preserved?? BTW, I also tried this with my antivirus software disabled, and it made no difference. I also checked my IE, and it's IE 6 with no plugins. Thanks for any help!! bob

Memory dump
by Guest TL07- 3 replies

I run the normal Professional version of Windows 2000. Everytime after my computer crashes and it makes a memory dump, I find that my temporary internet files are deleted as well. Is there a way to set the dump configuration so that it doesn't delete those files? Because I use a large cache and my hard drive is slow, so it takes 15-30 minutes to delete them.

W2K SP4 dual boot problems
by Guest legg- 12 replies

I've been nursing along a W98 2ed (on C:) W2K SP4 ( on D:) dual boot system since Y2K. My back-up method involved ternary rotation of hard drive sets. This produces a working hard drive for C and D, a most recent individual back up for each, and a previous back-up of each. Backing up involves cloning the current drive's contents onto the oldest back-up drives, installing the recent clones into operation, and retiring the working drives to most recent back-up position. Every time I do this, I get some kind of problem. Usually this involves an inaccessible W2K or W98 OS. Repair usually involves using W2K setup disc set, to fixmbr (default) from the command co…

System time keeps going back 1 day
by Guest Trevor- 3 replies

I have a Windows 2000 server (it's not on a domain) whose system clock periodically goes back by one day. It's started happening more frequently, and is becoming a real problem. We have a freeware program that's supposed to synchronize it with one of the online time servers on a daily basis, but it won't let you control what time of day it does it, and it doesn't do it early enough in the day to avoid problems with some scheduled processes that we have. I tried turning on the Windows Time service, but it gives an error saying the time is more than 12 hours out of sync and won't adjust it. I tried putting a new setting in the registry to increase the amount …
