Options for Logging On
by Guest Thomas- 4 replies

On Win 2K Pro I have 2 Administrator Accts. + 2 Other. On another HD, I have Vista Ultimate & w/ Vista when I boot up I get three icons from which I can choose & check: 1 for Admin., 1 for my User Name; and a Third for Guest. Can I get the same sort of options on boot-up to Win 2K Pro's screen? NOTE: I do not need or use Passwords, so none are required for booting to either HD. However w/ Win 2K Pro, it just boots right into my Wallpaper, Start Menu, Desktop, etc. WITHOUT giving me an option which of the accounts I might wish to utilize. I want to be able to access the other accts. sometimes. Thanks for any clarity on settings or whatever it…

Diskkeeper gives me a warning that my boot drive's performance is degraded because the MFT usage is at 83 percent. Is this really abnormal or a problem? If so, is there anything that cane be done about it (reduce MFT usage percentage or increase MFT capacity)?

I'm MCSE 4.0, but I went developer and everything has been fine for so long that I need some systems advice. I've been networking and using Windows 2000 since release, etc... I want to make this as simple as possible, and I'm sure anyone would understand. i have a BIOS drive C: first channel IDE that is divided into two partitions. C: (primary) and E: (extended data) ... the total is 8GB for the drive C: is a system partition of only 1GB and the E: is the rest of 8GB. C: contains my system files ( NT 2000 Workstation) . This workstation is my life's blood. Please imagine how important this process will be. I need to recombine the C: and E: partit…

I'm an administrator in networks with some 200 PC's in the domain. I'm looking for a tool that would help me in automation of new installation in each client(instead of installing in every PC individually). Is there some tool for that? Regards Dan

Hi everyone we have 3 computers running Windows 2000 pro sp4 for the past 3 years and networked to share programs all stored on the main machine which is connected to the printers and the internet. all are configured the same and have had no problems until a couple of months ago when one of the 2 office machines started to freeze on bootup. we fixed this a few times by using the ERD but now it is booting and rebooting 3 -4 times before it loads permanently. no error messages just reboots after entering the login password. can someone tell us what we can try to get this one machine back to normal ? thanks to all, bob

Need a little help please.....

I have the Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (Microsoft Press), but it's not been very helpful (or I have been very dense). I have been tasked with caring for an ancient Windows 2000 Server and the users on its small domain. What I need to do is have a user desktop that is set up with applications, printers, desktop links, favorites, etc. (everything they need to do their job) and restrict them from changing those things, installing applications, getting to the control panel, running unauthorized apps, etc. It is for a location that cannot seem to get its workers to stop installing crap on the local PCs and they want it locked down. (I sa…

Can't upgrade 2000sp2 to sp4
by Guest muzikhed- 4 replies

I had a W2k sp4 OS which crashed - failed to boot after attempting to fix Adobe program. With help from Dell I've wiped the c: clean & reformatted. I had much trouble getting it to boot at all. Would not complete the Win2K setup from CDrom. Finally I partitioned my Heardisk0 into 2 virtual drives: C: and H: and I set H: as the systemroot. Then I was able to get through the Win2k Setup sucessfully. Using Windows Update - I sucessfully installed Internet Explorer, but SP4 pack fails repeatedly. svcpack.log says: "Apply failed: c: <temp>\download\ntdll._p on h:\winnt\ntdll to get c:\<temp>\ntdll..dll" and repeats a similar message f…

WMI Service - Stops/Starts Multiple Timees per Day
by Guest Dan Marbes- 0 replies

I support a number of Windows 2000 servers in an enterprise enviroment (as well as Server 2003). I'm having issues with a number of the 2K machines. The WMI service will terminate unexpectedly and then (per the recovery options) restart. The service works as it is supposed to after the restart, but since we monitor the environment with MOM, this is sending a large number of alerts which I would like to eliminate. Does this repeated restart indicate a problem with the WMI service or should I look elsewhere for the root cause? I have not seen the issue on any of the 2003 servers, but am not familiar enough with the construction of the services to know…

Getting partition too big on W2K re-install (NTFS)
by Guest Bill Stock- 1 reply

A few weeks ago W2K hosed itself on my backup PC. I was able to get into the disk from a boot CD, but I could not get the disk to boot or W2K setup to see the installation. I pulled the drive this weekend and recovered the setup files I wanted to my XP machine. I also recreated and formatted the partitions I wanted in XP and put the files back on those partitions. W2K still cannot see the installation (disk unformatted or damaged), so I killed the boot partition and tried to recreate it in W2K, but I'm getting partition too big. The partition I'm trying to create is 8 GB and is NTFS. Disk is set to Auto in the BIOS (always was), so it should not be a si…
