Print dialog too big
by Guest bomberer4@yahoo.com- 0 replies

I recently added a new printer to my W2K machine. I'm not sure if this is the cause of my problem or not . . . When I try to print from OutlookExpress 6 the print dialog is too big to fit on the screen. I'm running 800x600 due to vision problems. The print dialog has changed recently: the border of the entire box is now much larger than necessary to contain the elements within. As such, there is quite of bit of flat gray area to the right the information/setup areas and between the Page Range/Number of copies areas and the Print/Cancel/Apply buttons (they are off the bottom of the screen.) The print dialog in MS Word does not have this problem. Anyone k…

Problem adding local user to local group or deleting local user
by Guest fkitzmann- 4 replies

I have a problem when trying to add a local user to a local group using "Computer Managment" tool on a Windows 2000 Server. First off: The existing group memberships are not displayed. Second: After hitting the Add... button an error message pops up and tells me "An error occurred attempting to create the Object Picker". Third: When trying to delete a local user, an error message pops up saying "An error occurred while attempting to delete a user: An invalid Active Directory pathname was passed" Has anybody had this problem? What can I do (besides reinstall)?

Has MS fixed Win 2000's file copy logic, which completely aborts onencountering a problem?

Has MS fixed Win 2000's file copy logic, which completely aborts onencountering a problem? I just upgraded from Win 98 to Win 2000 SP4, and I continued to be sickened by Microsoft's failure to implement reasonable logic for human users. In copying a tree structure from one place to another--as millions of us do regularly in order to, say, back up a USB stick to our hard drive--Microsoft has failed to implement any error recovery. In File Explorer, if you highlight a folder, select Copy, go to your destination, and select Paste, then, if any error occurs during the copying--for instance, Windows encounters a path that is too long-- then the copy completely …

System Crashes with 2G Memory
by Guest ggonthedl- 3 replies

Am looking for information that can lead to fix for W2KAS when installing 2G RAM. Motherboard: Asus A7M266-D Processor(s) (2): AMD Athalon XP 1800+ DIMM: KVR266X64C25/512 I have been running two KVR266X64C25/512 for about three years on this server, but when I install two of the same chip W2KAS crashes with a different STOP message each time, and never in the same stage of bootup. Sometimes it will make it into the OS and allow me to run an application, but the moment the application loads the OS crashes to a reboot. I tried inserting the /PAE switch in boot.ini, but this has not corrected the problem. However, when I remove the two new DIMM's W2KAS b…

Unable to locate the Desktop Icon Window
by Guest Colon Terminus- 2 replies

That is the exact message that pops up in a dialog box each and every time I click on the "Show Desktop" icon in the Quick Launch bar. "Show Desktop" works as expected, just that annoying Fatal Error dialog box. I've searched Google with no luck. I've searched Google Groups with no luck. I've searched Microsoft with no luck. This is a newly built box with a quad core processor, 4GB RAM and a 1TB disk array, dual booting 2K and XP ... both fully patched. Oddly enough, I see exactly the same behaviour when booted to XP. -- Posted via NewsDemon.com - Premium Uncensored Newsgroup Service ------->>>>>>http://www.NewsDemon.com<…

When I watch video clips on youtube, it takes time to download it, so that when viewing it for the second time it plays without downloading so it must be cached somewhere. Is it cached on disk or in the memory?

W2K fails to properly distinguish between Permanently Delete and Sendto Recycle Bin.
by Guest baobob@my-deja.com- 4 replies

I just upgraded from Win 98 to Win 2000 SP4, and I continue to be absolutely sickened at the lack of attention to vital detail in the UI. In File Explorer, on highlighting a file and pressing Del, it asks whether you want to send the file to the Recycle Bin. Fine. Perfect. But on pressing Shift-Del, it asks whether you want to DELETE the file. Everyone KNOWS that Windows has the virtue of saving things for you in case you accidentally DELETE something. Everyone KNOWS that "delete" means merely to send to the Recycle Bin. The phrase they're looking for, PERMANENTLY DELETE, is abandoned, thrown out, not in the picture. Do more recent versions of Window…

How to back up one computer by another?
by Guest Mike Tucker- 1 reply
I'd like to back up a 4-year-old desktop (which has a single physical hard drive and W2K OS) using a laptop (Vista OS) and an external HD. Ideally, I want to make a ghost image of the desktop HD. I normally do mirror image backups with Ghost 9 (which I'm quite happy with), but I'm not sure how to backup a computer which is itself in operation while I'm doing so. Any suggestions, anybody? Thanks.

Data organization and management best practices
by Guest Barkley Bees- 1 reply

I would very much like to hear from folks about their 'best practices' regarding data management, organization and directory structures. What are strategies do you follow for organizing and managing data on your systems (Client or server.....Mac, Linux or Windows...the same theories and practices can apply to all). In Windows I mainly keep my data in the 'My documents' folder or on my mapped network drives (separating work from personal) but I find that my data organization has gotten quite out of hand and I would like to redefine the structure and organzation for it. I, and surely others, appreciate any tips that any of you can share.

.dll hell again
by Guest alshideaway- 0 replies

Windows 2000 sp4. We have 2 separate environments for testing QA and IDE. Both machines are built identically; one is a vmware and the other is on real hardware. We are trying to install a msi package that registers a .dll file and it fails on the hardware box not the vmware box. I have tested the permissions, depends.exe and regmon, to no avail. “RegSvr32 Loadlibrary (“c:\mycom\mycom.dll) failed. A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed” is the general error. However in dependency walker I am getting an error on the KERNEL32.DLL function IsTNT – where on the vmware box it does not error. I am not a developer but the difference in the .…
