Cleanup Win 2000?
by Guest Bob Newman- 2 replies
I am interested in "cleaning" up an old bogged down computer's Windows 2000 system. Things like old inactive registry entries, even new one not being used, or anything else along these lines. It is a borrowed laptop I am getting ready to give back therefore anything I do must be 100% safe for the system. One mistake I made, this computer has VERY limited resources so I installed several programs to an external drive to save HD space and have since disconnected the HD (I still have it). I was using add/remove programs to remove some that I installed. When I would try to remove one of the programs that was installed on the now disconnected HD add/remove…

Is there an easy way to transfer files and settings from win2k to winXP-SP2? I tried to find an accessory in win2k that was similar to XPs "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" but didn't have any luck. Even a good tutorial on the MS KB would suffice.

Windows Update
by Guest V Green- 7 replies

So, I haven't updated my laptop for years (literally). I'm an MSDN member, so I got SP's that way. I am already at SP4. I just checked in with Windows Update, and, of course, the Win Update stuff was out of date, so I let it update. When I rebooted, the dreaded Automatic Update service was turned back ON, so I quickly turned it OFF and disabled it - Auto Update is a DISASTER - foisting off things like WMP 11 as "critical" when it is not (not to mention that WMP 11 is just a POS downgrade from WMP 10 as well). Of course, visiting the Windows Update site now results in a 0x8DDD0018 error. I am NOT gonna let Auto Update download stuff and THEN ask me …

unable to ear system's sound
by Guest :. mrcmobile- 1 reply

win2k workstation sp4 - Audio driver AC97 last updates. It happens that I can't ear system sounds. All wav files are played correctly. If I play a test wav file I can ear it correctly. If I go to control panel sounds and I assign a sound to an operation (f.i. empty trash), the speakers play correctly the wav files. But if I close control panel and I try to empty trash or anything other applications with associated sound, I can only ear the beep from the motherboard buzzer. I have re-installed ac97 drivers with last updates. No success. Any tips? Thank you. Marco

Lost identity: W2k treats me like a new user for all settings
by Guest jmoleary@earthlink.net- 5 replies

I've had this Windows 2000 box for 5 years. One PC with a cable internet connection. Today I turned on my PC and logged on and it logged on just fine but everything I have customized is GONE. My desktop, user settings, etc. It treated me as if I were a completely new user, asking me for internet connection settings, MS Office settings, etc. My user name is "joe". I can still see my old desktop sitting there under the "Documents and Settings\joe" folder but now windows apparently is using "Documents and Settings\joe.joeo" Can anyone tell me how I can let Windows know to use the old folders, desktop settings, display settings, etc?

DOS Convert

I have a 500GB Iomega USB Drive with about 60GB of files. It is formatted in FAT32. Have heard that NTFS gives better performance, so I am considering using the DOS command convert to switch. Question 1) if I do so, will I lose the files? 2) is it worth it?

My father recently accepted an automatic MS update on his computer, running Windows 2000 with all updates up to that point. His desktop and documents disappeared, with the login now looking like a new user. Turns out that C:\Documents and Settings still has his original profile directories under User, including his document files (phew!), but now also has an empty profile consisting of User.ComputerName, which is where he somehow gets placed when logging in using his user name (as judged by where Windows Explorer opens up to, in Start Menu). We created a new user, and Win2K creates another profile file set under NewUser.ComputerName, and then appears to disr…

Updates integration in installation disk
by Guest kindwoulf- 6 replies

I'm trying to make an updated windows 2000 insatllation disk, with sp4 and all susequents. So I downloaded the needed files and integrated them into an installation folder, then burned it to a bootable cd. The disk boots fine, and i tried it twice; once with only sp4 then with some additional updates and both worked fine. But after few days i tried it with a fresh start, new copy of w2k cd then integrate sp4 then the additions. What happened is that the disk booted fine and while the setup is loading, every thing stops and the blue screen tells me that "cannot find mountmgr.sys" and the insatallation aborts. What keeps me wondering is that i done before, w…

Saving GIF and/or JPEG from MS Paint
by Guest eramawm- 3 replies
Hi. I used to have a computer with Windows 2000 and used MS Paint a lot to copy bitmaps and convert to GIF or JPEG. Then I got a new computer, also with Windows 2000, but to my surprise I can now only save in four different bitmap formats. Where did JPEG and GIF go. I have tried to search the internet and found things like "graphics filters must be installed" and that MS Word would contain graphics filters. And I have MS Word installed and from what I read the graphics filters for GIF and JPEG are always installed with Word. So why doesn't my Paint save to GIF or JPEG? Thanks in advance, eramawm

Access Icons Replace all .exe files on HDD
by Guest Simsy512@gmail.com- 1 reply
I don't know what happened. I downloaded some new icons from CrystalXP.com to give the Office 2007 suite a new look for the icons. when I clicked on the access file (ACCICONS) for the shortcut that I wanted to create, all icons that were of type "Application" have this stupid Access icon next to them. This does not affect the functionality of my computer, but it does affect the visuals (I don't read the descriptions, I look at the icons). Any help on how to fix this issue, please let me know. System Restore did not work to a previous time, so don't even recommend it. Thank you! -Simsy512

CMD command string limit - 2047 bytes
by Guest JaimitoP- 4 replies

Hi all, I've read a MS article ( Article ID: 830473 ) that CMD is limited to 2047 bytes; that limit works when i type all those characters in a CMD window. It also worked when a legacy app uses CMD to run a command (it was about 4 months). Server and client stations have always been W2K SP4, with all critical updates installed until today... But now, the same legacy app can issue a 4060-byte lon command string with no problem!!!! Does any one of you geniuses know if it's been modfied in a W2K update/service pack? I made some chages/restrictions into my app based on 2047 limit and now i have to explain why thaty limit has benn iincreased!!!! Help P…

We lost our second DC a week ago. I installed a new DC. A few days later the only Windows '98 PC that logs into the domain gets an error indicating "the password is incorrect or they do not have permission to log into the domain." Since the only thing that changed was the new DC, I turned it off. They were able to immediately log into the domain. The first DC is named Server1 and the new DC is called DC2. Any ideas? TIA jwkh

Well, I installed Windows 2000 Professional on a 160 GB drive, and the CD only had service pack 2, so long LBA story short I now have about 21 GB of unallocated space at the end of the drive. What should I do with that? Is there any way I can merge it with the rest, or will I just have to make another partition?
