replace windows 2000 server
by Guest kk- 5 replies

I’m going to replace a “old” windows 2000 file server with a “newer” server which also run windows 2000. What will be the steps to maintain all shares, permissions & UNC path? Do the followings be OK? 1. Setup a new windows 2000 server named it “newer” & join AD. 2. Copy all files from “old” to “newer”. 3. Shut down “old”. 4. Rename “newer” to “old”. I’ve search the Internet & found info only for win2000 migrate to win2003. I also need to minimize the downtime as we are running 24hrs a day. Any suggestions?

Offline folder problem
by Guest Carlo Baldini- 1 reply

Our users have their My Documents folder pointing to a folder on a network share, but it is available offline should they wish to work away from the office. I'm dealing with a user who for some reason cannot set his My Documents folder to work offline. When I try I get a "parameter is incorrect" error on almost every file. I have researched this problem, and have found solutions (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738), but nothing has worked so far. I have tried deleting everything from the offline files folder and also pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL to delete the cache, but I still am unable to setup his offline files correctly, without getting this err…

I have an 8 yr old pc I'd like to put a new 30gb hard drive in. That's what's there now. As long as I match up what where with it, will the pc match up OK? Or, do I need to find something that will match my pc board? I'm sure there are plenty. Where do I get the disks to start and run the Win 2000 disks I have?

Major problem with hostname resolution in Win2K
by Guest chrisrocker90@gmail.com- 1 reply

Hi, I'm having a terrifically difficult time getting the hostname of my win2k computer to resolve to the correct, external IP address (as opposed to 127.0.0.1). I think it's a Win2K problem, Here's the issue: I'm using java to display the network interfaces and their names on two identical Dell Latitude D800 Win2K systems. The (undesired) result I'm getting on one system is as follows: Interface: MS TCP Loopback Interface Canonical Name: Chris <---- computer name hostAddress: 127.0.0.1 Interface Broadcomm NeXtrem Gigabit Ehternet Driver Canonical Name: 192.168.12.20 hostAddress: 192.168.12.20 On another system called "Rock", I get the desired re…

I've had 3 computers in the past week come in with blank blue desktops (no icons, no taskbars, no start button) just blank blue with a cursor arrow. Two machines were Win 2K sp4 with all updates, 1 was Win XP home sp2. I can use CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task manager and run programs/tasks and have scanned all 3 for viruses/spyware and all 3 came up clean on HJT. Anyone have any ideas on the cause/solution ? Thanks for any replies

User options at startup??
by Guest The Kat- 1 reply

I'm trying to help a friend fix his system. He has W2k Pro, and had to replace his primary HD, which worked OK, but he's now stuck in a non-administrator account with no option at startup to select any other account. I'm SURE I used to know how to reset that option (he needs the access to do backups), but I CAN'T remember how to do it now. Anyone, please?? -- Lumber Cartel (tinlc) #2063. Chkdsk runs twice?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 4 replies

If I tell Windows to do a chkdsk on my C drive and D drive on restart, and then I restart my computer, it will chkdsk the D drive and then chkdsk the C drive, and then it will restart again and then chkdsk the D drive again before finally loading up Windows. Is it normal for it to chkdsk the D drive twice? Is it safe to tell it to skip the second chkdsk of the D drive?

I get the error message at boot. I am setting a new computer. I have one HD which has Windows 98 on C: (FAT) and WINNT (NTFS)installed on D: Windows 98 boots fine. Windows 2000 used to boot fine too. After having installing Windows 2000 fine (it booted, worked fine) I downloaded Service Pack 4 from microsoft. I haven't installed any other program. It installed fine. After rebooting I get the error. Emergency console see the directory WINNT fine and NTOSKRNL.EXE is there OK. What should I have in my BOOT.INI? I sure the files are fine (not missing or corrupt) but somehow Boot won't just see D: even though emergency repair does. The computer I am working …

Windows 2000sp4 workstation connected to FreeBSD 6.2 via Samba 3.0 I can add a network printer, (called windowsprint) attached to server bramley, using the Add Printer wizard but cannot print. When I use the Print Test Page button I get an error message which offers to run the print troubleshooter. I have basic network connectivity, [start]->[Run] \\bramley opens a window showing the shares available, Ping works both ways by name and address. I can copy files in both directions. Printing works on the server. The Samba tests all run OK. I can see the printers shared by Samba in the Add Printer wizard dialogue. However when I try c:\>net use \\bramley\…

SAM corruption - help!
by Guest Mel- 1 reply
My daughter and I have identical Dell Inspiron 8000s with factory-installed Win2k. For unknown reasons mine had a catastrophic crash two days ago; I've managed to get some control back, but it appears the SAM is corrupted so I can't get into Recovery Console. For reasons which aren't yet clear I can't get it to start up in Safe Mode either, so have no way of getting a command Prompt. I have System Recovery and Win2k reinstallation CDs, and Startup and ERD disks. However, none of these will repair or reinstall SAM. I have 2 ideas to check out: 1) swap my DVD writer into the other laptop and copy Win2k so that I can install/repair rather than reinstall…

Server shutting itself down
by Guest Penny- 4 replies
I've got a server that shuts itself down just about every week, but other than the system event 6008 which just states there was an expected shutdown. What else can I look at that might give me a clue what's going on? There aren't any errors or any events in the application event log that were around the time of the shutdown. I'm noticing that this usually happens on Tuesday, but there's no schedules in the windows scheduler and there don't appear to be anything out of the ordinary running as a service that might cause this. I'm kind of stumped, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to troubleshoot this?

Not Saving User Settings?
by Guest Reid- 1 reply
In restoring a single, multi-user, desktop computer seem to have somehow locked the desktop and start menus of all the users. Any changes the users make to their desktops or start menus are not saved after they log out. The recycle bins do not "work" either. Dragging a an icon onto a recycle bin doesn't work. The bin does not become highlighted and the dragged icon ends up resting atop the bin's icon. View settings in windows explorer, internet option advanced ticks aren't saved either. Thanks.

Auto arrainge

I have a win2k system that I've cloned several times using Acronis. After doing some major experimenting one on of the drives I pretty well ruined the system... but managed to mostly repair it (mostly). The only problem I can see remaining is that "auto-arrange" of my desktop icons does not work. Though the icons do move a bit...they definitely do not line up. Since all my data is well backed up and I have several fully working systems... I can experiment at will. Here is what I tried: I've backed up the entire WINNT folder (from a fully working drive) and restored it to the problematic drive... only to be left with the identical problem... I canno…
