Association error "Cannot find the file..."
by Guest Rich Pasco- 2 replies

I recently "upgraded" my Windows 2000 system to Textpad 5.0.3, and have a problem. If I double-click on a text file in Explorer (or enter its name on a command line), then after Textpad opens the file as it should, I get the message: (X) Cannot find the file [filename.txt] (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. [OK] In Control Panel / Folder Options / File Types, .TXT is supposed to open with TextPad. In my registry, HK_CLASSES_ROOT/Applications/Textpad.exe/shell/open/command is set to "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\TextPad.exe" -s "%1" If I enter that entire command on the…

can not create folder called scripts anymore
by Guest tani- 11 replies

Hello, Since two days I realised on my windows 2000 server that every folder called "scripts" is disappeared and when I try to create a file or folder called "scripts", doesn't matter in which directory, I get the following error message: Cannot rename New Folder: A file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different filename. I did a search in the registry for "scripts", I killed every unknown process, I disabled every unimportant service, I searched for alternate NTFS Streams, hidden files, Viruses and Trojans... no success.. I still can not create a file or folder called "scripts". I can create "skripts, "script" e.g. but no "…

We have been receiving Dell Optiplex computers lately and they have USB keyboards. There is no PS2 port on these computes. Dell in there wisdom does not send the same keyboard with ever machine. The issue I am having is that the USB keyboard will not function to allow you to enter a password to log into Windows 2000. I can use the keyboard to log into the Bios and even select safe mode (F8) prior to windows but once we get to the log in prompt the keyboard does not function unless it is the exact same model that the image for that machine was created with. Has anyone come up with a work arround for this issue?

Need to re-boot if router not powered at start
by Guest nesredep egrob- 1 reply

Very occasionally I am too late powering the router and cannot find a way of "Preparing Network Connections" after the computer has started up. I find that the network show that 29 packets have been sent and 25 received but it is no use waiting for the email or trying to get results from Firefox. The error message is "Network is down or DNS failed". Is there a command which can be typed in which will allow the computer to connect without having to re-boot, please. Install webcam without admin rights?
by Guest Michel Morel- 0 replies
I want to deploy a webcam driver that my users can install with a standard account, not admin. How could I do that? We still use Win2000 on desktops with Win2003 servers. An open thought : I discovered that Windows installs a device without admin rights and further asking if... the device driver is properly signed and of compatible rank match with another installed device. E.g. if you plug a new USB webcam and a USB webcam is already installed using the same driver and of compatible rank match, Windows installs it. Could the registry be pre populated with a webcam driver by, say group policy deployment or login script? So that when a user plugs the we…

Always an error being logged by hotfix if installed by Windows Upd
by Guest RJARRRPCGP- 1 reply

I always get this error or similar in hotfix logs: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201 But, despite the above, Windows Update isn't asking for the same updates over and over again. Also, despite the above, qfecheck don't find any problems. Is qfecheck correct about the hotfixes being installed properly?

An error being logged by hotfix if installed by Windows Update!
by Guest RJARRRPCGP- 0 replies

I get Update.exe extended error code = 0xf200 or Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201 in the hotfix logs, if I don't install them manually! But despite that, Windows Update don't ask for the same updates over and over again, so most people won't know of any problem. Also, qfecheck didn't find any problems, reported all of the updates being current.

Transferring Win2000 to a new computer 1 2

My new HP computer came with Vista Home Premium. I don't like Vista and I want to install Win2k from my old machine instead. After 6 years I don't know where my win2k installation CD is, but the CD is copied to my old hard disk and I do have my serial number. I used the serial # when I had to reinstall win2k, and when I registered online at microsoft.com to get "automatic updates". I copied i386 from my old machine onto a USB flash drive and tried to install win2k from within Vista. I thought I would dual-boot for a while, but the boot loaders are conflicting and Vista is not allowing win2k to install. So I thought I would boot from floppy, fdisk the new machi…

Can anyone suggest a good program that can clone the OS on another Harddrive? I tried Ghost, but apparently you need the enterprise version to put it on win2000 server, and since I already have Ghost 10, I don't want to spend a whole whack of money for nothing. I know I can do it through xcopy, but it's a bit of a pain. Thx

Hi, We have 3 Win2000 Server SP4 on the network. 2 Members and 1 DC. I sometime have to fix my collegues computer and want to use resources on the network like shares folders and Internet access. Because the employes PC don't need to be part of the Domain, I connect to servers by typing the server name in the run box like \\servername. Then a logon windows shows up and requires a domain user name. I type in a username and can see and access all shares. This works fine on the member server but don't on the DC? Why? How can I make this work on the DC since I have to access share files? IT's like anonymous listing of shares it not allowed because I got th…

NTDLL.DLL v. 5.0.2195.7006
by Guest Tom- 3 replies

Can anyone tell me how and why NTDLL.DLL version 5.0.2195.7006 got installed on my Win2000 AS server? I have searched the DLL Help database at: http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&pid=3075&vid=36832&alpha=&S=0 with no luck. I have searched the Microsoft sites with the query: "5.0.2195.7006 AND ntdll.dll", also no luck. I grepped through the .log files in my WINNT directory and discovered that an NTDLL.DLL was installed as part of the "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4", but it doesn't say what version was installed. I walked through the entire list of rollup 1 fixes given in the table at: http://support.mic…

I have a dell Inspiron C600, and I'm almost positive (i checked, and no support, at least with my bios revision) there is no USB boot support. Is there a way to boot the USB CD-ROM drive, without USB CD- ROM support? Is there like a boot floppy (such as, Smart Boot Manager) that would work the same way? I do not have the CD-ROM drive, either, and the computer was manufactured in 2001, so it only has USB 1.1. Any and all help would be appriciated, Code Magician

Upgrading..

I'm planning on updating my computer, and want some opinions and/or suggestions. Note that I am an Intel/ATI person, although considering how AMD bought ATI you might be able to convince me to choose nVidia (although I didn't leave Google even though they partnered with AOL <.<). Currently I am on: 2.6 GHz Pentum 4 1.5 GB DDR RAM (I think it's 400 MHz) 256 MB ATI RADEON 9550 AGP video card http://beatme101.com/images/xblade.jpg An old, but still quite good 17 inch Compaq FS740 monitor that maxes at 1280*1024*32@60. I have 3 hard drives, which I plan to transfer to the new rig. They're fast drives (all 7200 RPM), 2 IDE and 1 SATA. ~740 GB (40 + 300…

Supreme Commander

I'm trying to get this game (Supreme Commander) working in Windows 2000 Professional SP4. As you may know, it only supports Windows XP SP2. There is no way I would ever put Windows XP on this computer, and SP2 is even worse than that. Is there any way I can get the functions it requires from XP into 2000 to get this game to work? I heard a similar thing has been done with Halo 2, getting it to work on XP instead of just Vista. The first error I have so far to attempt to overcome is: SupremeCommander.exe - Entry Point Not Found The proceure entry point getaddrinfo could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll. I heard this could be fixed by…

auto-switch LAN to dialup?
by Guest Gretch- 3 replies

Is there some mechanism by which we could test, perhaps every minute, for Internet connectivity via the LAN interface (e.g., ping a remote nameserver), and if that has failed, initiate an already-named dialup connection? We have a satellite connection which occasionally "goes down" due to severe weather on either end, and need to re-establish an Internet connection via dialup while unattended for a single w2000 machine as necessary. Thank you.
