this is the weirdest problem i've ever seen. We have a user who's first print job from her RDC session always hangs every day. Then when she logs off the server and back on to clear her virtual print queue mapped to the network printer installed on her local computer, she can then print. I've tried deleting her profile from the server, reinstalling the printer on her local computer, no such luck. Any ideas of what could I could possibly try next???? She use mstsc to connect to the 2000 SP4 server. Even cancelling the job in her virtual print queue doesn't work, it just sits at Deleting forever until she logs off. Is there some sort of logging I can …

Reapplying updates
by Guest Andrew- 2 replies

I remeber reading something about this 4 or 5 years ago and just need some refreshing! I have a Windows 2000 server all up to date (SP4 etc). I want to now install IIS using the original Windows 2000 CD which does not include any services packs, how do I know what updates I need to apply afterwards. If re-apply SP4 that would over-write any updates I had done after originally applying SP4 thus requiring me to perform all those updates again? Would it be enough to run SP4 then check the windows update web site, or would I need to manually re-apply all updates since SP4. Also in general, if I am required to pull files from a Windows 2000 CD that ha…

I'm anal about window size and positions
by Guest jim- 3 replies

but W2K doesn't seem to share my analness. Does anyone know why W2K doesn't reliably, after closing a window by shutting down the app, restore it to the size and position that it occupied on the screen when you next open that app? If it's just a W2K quirk, and I'm thinking it is after diddleing with it off and on since W2K was released, is there a utility that's "better than others" that will manage the window sizes and positions in the background? I had pretty much learned to live with it until I just moved from an old 17 inch CRT to a 21 inch wide aspect LCD monitor and now it's even more irritating than before with all that screen real estate. An…

How to prevent access to public folders?
by Guest Millie- 0 replies

Hello, Our active directory is on a Windows 2000 server. We also have Exchange 2003 running on the same box as the active directory. I have set up a user on the network with an Exchange mailbox. The user is a member of the Domain Users group. Users access their email from the desktop or via Outlook Web Access. All of our email users can access our public contacts information via their mailbox. Is it possible to prevent a specific user from accessing the public contacts information via their mailbox through Outlook Web Access? Thank you for your help.

Renaming Fonts?
by Guest Tony- 1 reply

Is it at all possible to rename fonts? I've received PDF documents with the font Helvetica-Bold in them. Helvetica is shipped with Macs, not Windows 2000. I'd like to copy Arial-Bold and then rename it Helvetica-Bold, but I don't know if the font name is inside the font file and if I'd be messing up anything. Thanks! Tony

I have a disk full of Linux files that I need to look at from my Win2k professional desktop. The workstation has Windows Services For Unix 3.5 on it. The disk connects with a USB port. Unforunately, that is as far as I can get. Looking at what documentation that I have been able to find so far, I cannot find any easy way to make this happen. Any suggestions?

by Guest samson287- 3 replies

After an automatic update, my desktop is gone, along with most icons and shortcuts. Outlook is now empty of all emails and address book. All favorites and cookies are gone. When I go to Programs, even those shortcuts are missing. Is any of this recoverable? (I know the shortcuts can be rebuilt, but Outlook is the biggee) This is the second time in 2 years this has happened! -- Dave

need usb NIC driver to load before logging on to domain
by Guest auxvivrespos@gmail.com- 4 replies

I'm currently administering a touchscreen workstation running win2k, that operates without a keyboard and operates on a win2k-based domain. Since there is no keyboard, the workstation is configured to log on to the network domain automatically. This particular workstation is using a usb-based network interface card. The network adapter is a Linksys USB200M. Because this adapter is usb-based its drivers seem to either take longer to load or are loaded later in the bootup process. This creates a problem whereby the Winlogon process attempts to automatically log on to the domain controller, and retrieve its roaming user profile BEFORE the network adapter has …

Task Scheduler Error 0x8007000d: The data is invalid.
by Guest Robert Reed- 13 replies

Full error message is : The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed; therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account information existed for the task. The specific error is: 0x8007000d: The data is invalid. Account permissions or security rights are not the issue. Cannot View "Hidden Tasks" from the "Advanced" tab of "Control SchedTasks" "Hidden Tasks" is not available. This is a relatively new install and the box was promoted to a DC after installation. I can find lot of references to this error for Win2003 as a shadow copy issue but this is a Win2000 installation so this is not applicable…

run time error "75" - Path/File access error
by Guest aa- 3 replies

I have an aplication program which works with a web-camera which works fine on w2k and XP. It installed normally on Vista and on plugging the camera Vista detected it coprrectly (including the model of the camera) and completed the installation saying that the camera installed successfully and ready for work. However an attempt to tun the application resulted in a run time error "75" - Path/File access error What might be the reason? Could it have to do with Vista security which prevents access to a file?

Reinstall Win 2000 Pro
by Guest leapjay- 10 replies

After considerable discussion, Tech Support in my ISP suggested that I reinstall Windows. I have Windows 2000 Pro, and have the install CD -- in fact I have 2 CD's: one that is labelled "Windows 2000 Professional Step by Step Interactive", and a second one, labelled "1-2 Processor Edition" that was shrinkwrapped with a Quick Start Guide, and has a "Includes Spervice Pack 2" sticker on the outside of the envelope. Which one should I use, and are there any tips to look for? I searched the Microsoft web site for 2 hours but could not find one article on reinstalling Win 2000.

I'm in trouble over users
by Guest cindyjames- 2 replies

Hi I thought I'd clean up my boss's Win 2k puter because it was slowing down so much, so I thought since I knew all the users on our network, and he had heaps more than that. So I deleted a whole load of them. And now his puter doesn' connect the network, and no internet. And most of his icons on the desktop don't show up. I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840001 and totally don't understand any of it. I mean like I put all the users back in from his Documents and Settings folder. I just totally don't get all that ManagedBy and MemberOf stuff. We're all just in a Users Group called WORKGROUP. How hard is that? But I remember last week I star…

How to find whether /3GB switch is in effect
by Guest Prem Mehrotra- 2 replies
I have Windows Server 2000. My Windows SA has added /3GB switch in boot.ini which will go in effect next time server is rebooted. How do I verify that memory available to Applications is now 3GB while memory available to Windows OS is 1GB (instead of 2GB). When I look in taskmgr, I do not see anywhere that memory avaiable to applications is 2GB and to Windows OS is 2GB. Is there some system log file I can look to verify this. Thanks a lot, Prem

How do I temporarily disable a domain controller (without turning it off!)
by Guest KingCronos- 4 replies

We have two web servers in an offsite location. One is a domain controller that is used by the web services on both boxes. I hope to install a new seperate DC, and to test that web services can use that, I want to disable the box that doubles as a web server and DC. Obviously, as it is hosting websites, I do not want to switch it off. Is there an easy way of doing this? Thanks, KC

[Win2k Sp4, updates current as of 13 Sep 07...p4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM] Howdy; Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolving this? Articles I've found on MSDN and past postings here refer to a fix...from a couple of years ago yet my system's up-to-date. Any leads would be appreciated. Details below are gleaned from Process Explorer v10.06. thx, -Craig About every 30 minutes, services.exe spikes to 100% of cpu. The thread is listed as services.exe+0x85f7 and is initiating a UDP session w/a local address of "clientname:bootpc." The spikes last about 30 seconds apiece. This is on a LAN with 3 (DHCP) Windows clients, a (fixed IP) NAS and t…

Cannot view hidden files and folders, or edit default domain polic
by Guest kenny0305- 1 reply
I am having a lot of problems with my W2K server. I cannot edit my default domain policy, local security policy, or my group policies at all. I do not have permission to do so, even though I am logged on as the network administrator. More to the point, when I select view hidden files and folders through folder options, it makes the screen blink and then changes nothing in the folder view. I believe this is down to my default domain security policy which someone has changed in my absence. Can the default domain policy or the show hidden files and folders option be edited in the registry? If so where can I find them? All help much appreciated!

My friends PC keeps sending spam emails. We removed viruses, adware and spyware with Norton, Spybot search and destroy, Xsoftspy. Firewall is on, all up- to date. The spam does not goes out because Norton stops them, but it just keeps trying to send them and the PC slows down to a halt. How do we gain control back over it? Thank you.
