windows 2000 AS showing disk is full when it shouldn't be
by Guest group22- 12 replies
Hi, I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4. Windows is saying the disk was nearly full. (about 32GB used) The disk is roughly 34GB and I didn't see any large folders or files on it. If I look at the properties of all folders (including hidden) the folder sizes add up to about 6GB. This morning, I ran a utility called i.disk that displays folder size graphically and it is only showing about 6Gb of disk space used. I have scanned for viruses and found none. I scanned for rootkits and it came up clean. I ran a file system check on boot, that didn't clear it up. Any ideas as to how to proceed? Thanks, Rob

I need Windwos 2003 Service Pack 1
by Guest Brad Pears- 6 replies

I am trying to obtain a copy of Windows 2003 service pack 1 for installation on my 2003 server. When I use windwos update, it only has an option for Service Pack 2 which I do not want to install at this time. Is there a way to force it to ignore service pack 2 and show Service pack 1?? OR does someone have a link to where I can downlaod SP1 from?? Many thanks, Brad

re-using user names after re-installing a win2000 server
by Guest Michael Marosz- 1 reply

i am in a jam. I have a win2000 server whose hdd's died. I do not have any recovery disks. I re-installed the operating system on new hdd's, and I used the same computer name and domain name. The server install went without any problems. My problem is with logging into the new domain from the client workstations. I have winxp and win2000 clients who were joined to the domain before the hdd's died, and they have domain users they log in with. They are not using roaming profiles or re-directed folders. On one client pc (a win2000 pc), domain userA existed in the 'old' domain (i will call it old domainA). After i re-installed the server (i'll call it n…

PoolMon on Win2k locks up - any alternatives?
by Guest tbone- 2 replies

If I run poolmon right after login, it seems ok for a while. Then as I start up my usual applications, eventually it seems to freeze the system up, i.e. TaskMon and PerfMon both stop updating and the mouse barely responds. After experimenting, I've found that I can kill the console window it's running in (with careful and deliberate mouse movement) and the system returns to normal. I'm trying to track down something that seems to use up some resource after about a day or so. Usually, Kerio (my firewall) starts complaining of an insufficient resource, and soon after everything else goes down the drain too. Sometimes if I close everything fast enough, I can rest…

I have two DVD burners in my PC. In "My Computer" both show up as "Compac Disc." Is there a way to change this labeling? For example, I'd like to change these names to "Sony DVD" and "Lite-On DVD."

font and characters change
by Guest K.Sawyer- 0 replies

I work in an office with several workstations. When I open, print, create, etc. a file from one of the work stations, it changes / converts the font size and also it changes / converts the apostrophe ' into an equal sign =. This only happens on one work station. This workstation is running Microsoft Word 2002 SP3 and running Windows XP Professional, Version 2002 SP2. Any ideas? I've tried to reinstall Microsoft Office and that did not help. This has been going on for some time and have no idea the date to use for system restore. Thanks! -- K.Sawyer

disable CD auto run
by Guest Bercea Gabriel- 3 replies

hello I want to know if there is a possibility of disabling the Cd auto run programmatically but in real time, without having to restart the computer. I know it can be disable from registry but this needs restart. I know that if I modify the reg key and the unmount and mount again the cd devices I will succeed but this is too complicated. I also know that by holding down the left shift button while the cd is loading the auto run is skipped. Is there another way ?

How do I get the bootup console back?
by Guest Ham Pastrami- 1 reply
It used to be that when I scheduled a chkdsk /f for the next reboot, I would get a console display during startup showing the chkdsk progress and output. Now, it just stays at the Starting Windows screen. It still performs the check and the rest of the bootup continues as normal, but I'd like to see the progress again. This change might be traceable to the installation of some kernel-level debuggers that I installed. I have since uninstalled them, but still no console during pre-boot disk checks.

Anyone, I have Windows 2000 Pro. Everytime after I boot up and log on, after the windows 2000 pro loading process, windows explorer keeps blinking. The whole desktop along with icons and background flickers and rolls over and over. Under tasks, the task showing explorer keeps on going away and reappearing while above happens. Does anyone know what's causing this and how it could be fixed? Another issue, whenever clicking on internet explorer or mozilla firefox to go on the internet, after clicking internet explorer or mozilla firefox browsers disappear. Does anyone know what's causing this and too, know how this problem could be fixed? Thanks, Nate

Unsigned driver ?
by Guest philo- 6 replies
I've recently setup a few machines with Win2k...then added additional hardware. At the time of installtion...the H/W was automatically detected and installed by Windows and there were no problems...but I did get that "unsigned driver" warning which I just ignored. Well that was a few weeks ago..but I just now realized that I had not downloaded any drivers nor used a driver CD... the H/W was picked up and installed by the OS ( I assume from the inf folder) so I was just curious as to why that warning appeared? The only thing I can possibly think of is that the OS was fully updated before adding the add'l H/W.

W2K Defrag Exclusions
by Guest Roger Fink- 6 replies

In order to defragment my hard drive I need to exclude the file gobackio.bin (the file Goback writes to, which takes up 10% of the drive space). I can do this for my Fix-It Utilities defrag program, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it with the OS System Tools defrag program, which I think is a better choice here. How do I do this?

Modem Trouble
by Guest W. Watson- 6 replies

I installed W2K on a P3, and then had to re-install it. Before I installed it the second time I was able to get a model S20 Sterling 56K FAX PCI modem up and running to dial out. After the second install (I reformatted the HD too, and added SP4 plus some security fixes, along with SP rollup 1), the device manager does not see the modem. I've installed the drivers. I see a yellow question mark around one of the PCI devices. Comments? Installing modems drives me crazy. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>
