Closing port 135 and disabling DCOM affect Task Scheduler?
by Guest updata@noemail.com- 3 replies

I recently had a reason to set up a scheduled task for the first time in quite awhile. However, I couldn't start my Task Scheduler Service. My operating system is Windows 2000, sp4 with the updated rollup pack v2. I found that the only way to start the service was to right click on the mstask.inf file and install. That asked for the SP4 update version of mstask.exe and mstinit.exe on the original Windows 2000 OS disk. After successfully starting the service, I now get constant auto updates from Microsoft asking me to install the Update Rollup SP4, which was already installed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861 I decided to install it ag…

Windows not seeing drive as DVD R/W
by Guest mcoffee41- 6 replies

I just put in a Sony DRU-710a DVD R/W as a master disc drive. Windows saw the drive and installed a basic CD-Rom driver for the device upon the first boot up. It will not see any DVD disc though, only regular cd's. Sony does not provide any drivers for it, so I'm not sure how to get Windows to see it as a DVD-Rom Drive. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

Indexing just a portion of a webpage
by Guest Matt- 1 reply

Hello, I have created a catalog for a website using the Indexing Service. Is there a way to make the Indexing Service only index a portion of each webpage in the site (i.e. the content area)? Right now, my search descriptions are pulling back all of the text on each page (the navigation, header text, ... ). As you can see below, this info is pretty pointless. Does anyone know if there is a way to scan just the content area? ********example search result******* Demographics Site Search. SIDCO. About SIDCO. Mission Statement. Affiliates & Staff. Available Properties. Pawling Station Business Park. Peachey Industrial Park. Search Properties. Business …

If anybody's interested.......

I solved my own problem when I found PC Wizard 2008 at majorgeeks.com, unlike my previous attempts with aida32 where I couldn't ID the chipset or motherboard manufacturer PC Wizard did. However while Aida32 generates links to product info or driver downloads PC Wizard just identifies and then u have to go to work at the manufacturer's web site and use the local search engine to get the drivers. It is still a powerful tool and guide for setting up a roll-your-own or a 'mystery' second hand machine and it is freeware, no I don't work at majorgeeks and have no stake in them. Another good place for the DIY crowd is free-codecs.com or just codecs.com, whatever th…

When I try to add/remove the keyboard, mouse and video drivers with "!" marks next to them or install ATI Rage XL drivers windows returns "failed to load drivers". Hope someone can assist. Thanks!

Re-Display "File Download Competed" Message from Systray
by Guest Clueless in Seattle- 2 replies
As I was typing my previous post, a little message popped up from the systray in the lower right corner of my screen. But before I could finish reading it, it popped back down out of sight. It said something like "File Download Completed" but I didn't have time to note the name of the file or the folder it had downloaded to. I'm concerned about this because I don't recall starting any file downloads this morning. So, how may I re-display this message so I can try to figure out what is going on here?
