Re: Error 0x80070006 when configuring Win2K Server
by Guest DanTheMan2- 0 replies

Re: Error 0x80070006 when configuring Win2K Server I know this thread is quite old, but I have run into this same problem. The error is caused by sysocmgr that runs to install iis and other Windows components. To get rid of this error, go to the control panel, add/remove programs, add/remove Windows Components, locate the Management and Monitoring Tools. You can remove the entire thing or just the subcomponent named "Connection Manager Components". The error will go away after this point. Moving from an ABIT KD7A MB to a ASUS P5NSLI MB
by Guest W. Watson- 1 reply
I'm about to start building a new PC with an ASUS MB (SATA/PCI, PCIe, IDE, etc.) from the remnants of a PC with an ABIT MB (IDE/PCI). The old PC has W2K installed on its C-drive. I've been told it might be possible to do a transfer of the OS, apps and data from the old PC to the new PC using something like Norton Ghost or Achron (sp?). I would mount the old (IDE) HD as the D-drive, and the new SATA drive as the C-drive. Is that true? I would expect to have to find new drivers. Is that pretty much it? Where would I get the drivers and how would I know which to find? Is W2K going to tell me when I try to boot up on the new system? It's tempting to do thi…

BigLba problems
by Guest mike000777- 9 replies
Ok I installed a new 320GB HD in Win2k by doing the EnableBigLba registry change and everything worked fine. Two days ago I reinstalled Win2k and of course it didn't recognize the drive above 128MB, nor did it recognize the formatting. So, I did the registry mod again and it still didn't work. I was messing around and made the new drive "active". I confess, I didn't know WHAT I was doing, I was just trying to get it to work. I still dont' know what that does. :( Well I later learned that I needed SP3 or greater for BigLba to work. So, I downloaded SP4 and a rollup, etc etc etc... fully updated and now it still shows the orig 128 MB partition 'active' and an…

How to assign application to computer
by Guest el- 6 replies

Hi all, I am new to use group policy to deploy application to desktops or users. The application I used to try was Office Compatibility Pack 2007. I had tried several different ways to assign it to several desktops. The common works I had done for the different tries were: 1.. Created a new Deploy Application OU under MyDomainName domain in Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) 2.. Created a new MS Office Compatibility Pack 2007 OU under Deploy Application OU 3.. Created a new assign group policy called Assign to computers in Properties window of MS Office Compatibility Pack 2007 OU and have the MSI file and other settings entered I then use differen…

Can't revert to "Show Hidden Folders"
by Guest rubyjack- 9 replies
I have previously posted this problem, but now I have some new info. As the subject says, I can't revert to "Show Hidden Folders." I have gone into Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View> and ticked "Show Hidden Files and Folders -On." Everyone suggested that I check this first. However, when I was poking around in the registry I found the following settings. It seems to me that they are not correct for showing hidden folders. I have played around with them some, but to no avail. I thought someone more knowledgeable than me might spot a problem. Thanks for any help, Dan Hacker Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Softwar…

OE insists on dialup connection
by Guest Gretch- 1 reply
Connections for various mail and newsgroup accounts in OE 6.00.2800.1807 run in Windows2000 are marked as "Any Available", which worked fine until I created a new dialup connection which was tested before returning to using the ethernet LAN connection. Now, every time I try to send email or connect to a newsgroup, OE insists on dialing that new dialup account even though I am currently connected to the Internet through the LAN. How do I restore "Any Available" connections to email and newsgroups, even though they are marked that way? Restarting OE and rebooting seem to have no effect whatsoever on eliminating the dialup connection method upon which OE insists.

Hard Drive Swap
by Guest Roger Fink- 4 replies

I would like to remove the hard drive on my IBM laptop, which has Windows 2000 installed on it, and replace it with a hard drive which was removed fromanother machine, same model 2682 R40, also running a freshly installed Windows 2000. Undoubtedly there are some differences in the installed driver versions, and the processor on the machine to be fitted is a Pentium 4M 2.0 rather than the 2.2 of the other machine. I'm pretty sure the two CD-DVD combo drives are the same. The proprietary IBM software on the "blind" partition that comes on a new machine is not installed on either machine. Is it likely that once the replacement drive is installed the machine will s…

Safe Mode Not Displaying Drivers
by Guest Will- 3 replies

I am trying to transfer a Windows 2000 install to new hardware and the system hangs and reboots on one of the drivers. For some reason, starting in Safe Mode is *not* displaying the list of drivers as it usually does, on the new system. What would cause that and is there some extra step I can take that would force display of each driver as it loads? -- Will

Re: recent security update breaks print spooler? Thanks Sally. You don't know how much your advice assisted me. It was spot on. In fact, I even uninstalled SP4 rollup after fixing up the printing issue and reinstalled it to prove that by deleting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\PostS PUpgrade) and then restarting the spooler, it alone solved the problem - and it did. Even though I spent countless hours trying to fix the problem before taking your advice, I was much relieved when your technique worked. thanks again -- jojo1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ jojo1's Profile: http://forums.techarena.i…

Process-dependent automatic opening of specific file in Word
by Guest Herbert Eppel- 6 replies

My Translation Memory software produces intermediate tab-delimited txt files, which I open in MS Word (and temporarily convert to a table via a macro) for reviewing purposes. I wonder if there is some (relatively straightforward?) way of implementing a procedure that would check whether txt export subprocess is finished and then open the exported txt file in MS Word (and run the conversion macro)? -- Herbert Eppel http://www.HETranslation.co.uk

Suddenly, Internet Explorer 6 on Win2K Pro won't browse to any SSL webpage. Administrator accounts can access SSL pages, but non-administrator accounts get the IE "page not found" error. I've recently had to fix corrupt user accounts, and these accounts are the ones that can't access SSL pages. Firefox can access SSL pages fine. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Pat

New Hardware Found Error Message
by Guest Bob- 1 reply

Windows 2000 I have successfully installed a new printer & set it as the default printer. It works fine, no problems. Whenever I reboot the computer the "found new hardware... please wait" box comes up (listing my printer model), I must wait almost 5 minutes (the computer is tied up while Windows searches for drivers) then the dialog box asking new to insert the CD with the drivers comes up, I hit the cancel button at that point and everything works fine. What's up? How can I stop this from happening? Thanks in advance... Bob

Wandering taskbar
by Guest Blithe- 0 replies

(Applicable to W2K (SP4) For a week now my taskbar randomly relocates to the top, then to the right of the desktop - and refuses to drag back to the bottom where I want it to stay. By 'randomly' I mean that once it relocates then it will stay a day or two then change position for another similar time period. I posted for a remedy here and microsoft.public.win2000.registry but the suggestions were to try dragging the taskbar back (a hopeless task) or to clear my system of malware that was causing the problem. I have since made all reasonable efforts to scan for malware. I was learning to live with the annoyance. However, today, July 23rd, the taskbar sudde…

On my Windows 2000 Pro laptop with my HD partitioned as C: and D:, I just repartitioned the D: drive to give me more space using V-COM's Partition Commander (I booted from the PC CD). While using the boot CD, I saw a menu item labelled "Change SID". I figured that it would present me with a dialog that would show the present SID for my hard drive. However, I got an hourglass and I guess it must have changed it without asking - damn! After booting, I logged in as a Administrator and did some disk defragging (DiskKeeper). I also installed the lastest MS updates using Windows Update (except for the .NET updates). Horror of horrors, I've lost my non-Administra…

Do someboy know if i add more disk to de network drive managed by QStar, windows will become crazy when the space arise up 2 TB ?? Thanks in advance.

I am beginning to have some issues with the current motherboard in my system. It is a two processor ASUS P2BDS (yes, and oldie - but it has treated me well). I would really like to swap motherboards and avoid building up my system from scratch, but all the boards I ma looking at are single (uni) processor. If I recall correctly, when Win2000 installs, it loads a different kernel for SMP systems as compared to single processor systems. Will the SMP kernel just revert to a "single processor" configuration? Or will I need to somehow install the uniprocessor kernel? Undoubtedly there will be a couple of rough edges in terms of doing a motherboard swap, but is …
