Removal of Files using the %temp% command run line
by Guest Thomas- 1 reply

I run Win 2K Pro on one hard drive & Vista Ult. on another. If I run the %temp% command in Vista I can free up extra "leftover" files & the space they take up. If I run the %temp% command in Win 2K will I remove essential files? Some seem to be extremely large and I am thinking if I delete them, I might disable all my apps and other installations. Disk CleanUp utility in both Win 2K Pro and Vista leave the files listed by running the %temp% command unremoved but the space shown for these residual files in Vista is small (each under 1/4MB, whereas some Win 2K Pro files show dozens of MB each--so I am wondering if these are NEEDED and the %temp%…

Hi, I'm out of ideas and hope someone on the forum can help. When I try to eject my USB flash drive using the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" wizard the system gives a message: The device'Generic volume'cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later. This is a usually behavior and I have exited programs using USB disk. How do I eject a USB device? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Determining USB port version
by Guest Don Culp- 1 reply

How can I determine if my computer's USB ports are version 1 or 2. (The reason I'm asking is that copying files to a USB drive seems very slow so I suspect that the ports may be version 1.) Thanks, Don Culp

Broken Authentication, File and Registry Permissions
by Guest mikeg- 0 replies

We have a W2K IIS 5.0 Server with a website configured for anonymous authentication. It's been working fine for more than a year. After applying some July 2007 W2K updates, users suddenly started getting a Windows authentication login prompt. I checked the site and it's still set for anonymous access. The anonymous user account seems okay (not locked or disabled). Then I ran Authentication and Access Control Diagnostics 1.0 tool and discovered BUILTIN\Administrators, NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and BUILTIN\Users now have insufficient Server and Registry permissions. For example, BUILTIN\Administrators HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IISAdmin registry p…

multi boot thinks 98se is win2k
by Guest Quaestor- 3 replies

I have run win2k & win98se before with this system, multibooting just fine. After reinstalling w2k, I found that win98se would no longer boot, with the complaint that ntoskrnl could not be found (a w2k problem). Reinstalling w98 did not help. No matter how I try to deal with it, trying to boot w98 from the multi-boot menu runs into the problem that it thinks I'm trying to boot w2k. Here is the boot.ini, which according to all I've read (and that's a lot) should be working: [boot Loader] Timeout=7 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XXCLONE: (Cloned Volume) [d:0,…

Switching to a new C: drive (XP also)
by Guest surface9- 5 replies

This may seem a bit confusing - it shouldn't. I have my win2k pro (sp4) system installed onto my ATA C: drive which happens to be mounted within one of those removable h/d mounting brackets - after shutdwon I can unkey and remove this h/d from the system completely. If I boot up wih this h/d unplugged, then all that win2k sees is the the primary DMA channel (master) is not connected. I have a brand new SATA drive which I have formatted the same as my C: drive (FAT32). If I boot up wihout my C: drive, the system tries to find a bootable disk elsewhere, and, if I could makte this SATA drive bootable, it would work from it. So, instead of having to go throu…

Server 2000 and Deleting Clients
by Guest Todd P.- 0 replies

I cannot add a new computer to our domain as I get the message the domain has exceeded the max # of computers. Now, several older computers listed no longer exist. However, I'm unsure if we have totally eliminated them. Is there any program I can run to get the last time these computers logged in. If I delete an active computer by mistake, it causes lots of problems. I hope windows 2003 does a better job of managing it's computers. -- Thanks, Todd

IExpress Package is Not a Valid Win32 Program on Windows 2000
by Guest Dave Sexton- 3 replies

Hi everyone, I've created an open source project called DocProject (http://www.codeplex.com/DocProject) for which I've used IExpress to package a setup bootstrapper with a Windows Installer file (.msi). This blog article explains how it was done: From Setup and Deployment To Self-Extracting Installer http://davesexton.com/blog/blogs/blog/archive/2007/06/15/FromSetupAndDeploymentToSelfExtractingInstaller.aspx A user has recently reported that on Windows 2000 they get an error indicating that the .exe produced by IExpress is not a valid Win32 program. In the properties window it states that the program is a "Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor". The user …

We use to be a Novell network for years and years. For the past 5 years we were running 70 stations on Windows 2000 Pro with no issues. In March we switched over to a Windows 2003 server network. Our main DC we installed 64bit Windows 2003 SP2. All the stations stayed unchanged other than we had to create new profiles on the domain. All the stations ran fine for weeks then about a month after the switch over we had a handful of stations when the user's logged on a new profile was automatically created for them. When the server switch- over was done the new user profiles were all "U_Username", they did not show up as the usual "U_Username.domainname". When t…

Caching Settings
by Guest Shawn P- 0 replies

I have a W2K SP 4 server set up as a file server to store roaming profiles. The past admins did not ensure the "Allow caching of files in this shared folder" check mark was cleared. This has caused profile issues for our users and we end up rebuilding the profile. Is there a registry setting that would ensure caching was disabled when a new folder was created and/or ensure caching is not allowed on exisitng folders? Any other ideas on how to turn off this feature without touching each folder? Please let me know if you need further info to help me out! TIA

Win2K Server: Firewall and/or anti-virus
by Guest No@Email.Add.com- 3 replies

Hi Folks, I've had a problem with my XP machine and have had to dig out an old computer with Win2K Server. This computer had never been connected to the internet before but as soon as I connected I received some version of the GOTCHA virus. I had to reformat the HD and reinstall the OS but within minutes of re-connecting (through a dial-up connection) I was infected again. I bought McAfee VirusScan Plus but it won't install on this machine. I don't know if it's because the OS is a server version, because it's an x86 processor or both. I also tried Avast with the same results. Anyone know of a way to protect this machine while connecting through dial…

Login Screen Doesnt show up at boot
by Guest Usmanatron- 5 replies

Hi, Im having trouble getting to the login screen in my Win2K installation. Everything boots up fine, but it stops where the 'press Ctrl+Alt+Del' is supposed to come up. Instead, I just have a solid blue screen with the mouse. Ive tried all safe modes and still get the same problem. I don't really like the idea of having to reinstall Windows from scratch, so is there anything else i can do? Ive been reading around and suspect it might be something to do with userinit.exe, the one I have is: 17.3KB, modified 19/06/2003. The last thing I did was clone the hard drive (my idea of a backup) - Ive read KB article 249321 about the drive letter, but I dont t…

I've installed SKYPE and it seems to work fine but still I'm puzzled by the disappearing of messenger. Thanks in advance for any help.

Root level folder stuck at read-only
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

I have an ordinary user directory that was created on this computer under W2K, but has somehow gotten marked as read-only. Although I can view the properties and clear the read-only flag, the directory remains read-only. There's nothing unusual in the security attributes; this particular directory is full access for everyone. The only thing I can think of that's odd about it is that it's fairly large, about 10K files totalling some 6 GB. Hints? Steve Hendrix

Virus attack
by Guest Beasel- 3 replies

I downloaded an virus, apparently named JS/Phish! Now I am constantly hit with sites that want to sell me virus software. One frequent pop-up is a warning that I have "Trojan W32 Looksky" and download this software to fix. They have taken over my IE home site. and have constant pop-ups. Ran AVG and it found JS/Phish and healed it, it said, but no change. Ran MS oneCare and it said that there was no problem after about four hours. Problems seems to be getting better than yesterday or I am getting faster at deleting the popups. Running MS2000 and IE 7.0. AVG has kept me viral free for over four years. At wits end. -- Old computer guy with new pro…
