Start up

About 4 days ago my PC shut down during the day. When it was rebooted we logged on as administrator, as always, but it was like logging on to a total new screen. I did not have any of my documents, my sons i tunes, and when we went in to word, excel etc. it said "welcome to" like it was the first time we used it. I can find the documents etc. in my computer but when when we start it is not the same screen as we have had before. It is like a different user. I hope my description is clear enough for someone to help.

USB Driver problems
by Guest JR- 0 replies

I have a w2k machine, up to date, with both external usb devices, memory sticks etc. as well as an internal card reader using 2 USB internal ports. Works fine most of the time and WIN2k allocates 2 drive letters (left and right slot) Occasionally this would not be seen by the system. Now it is permanent! Win2k shows the two drive letters, but device manager show and "unknown" usb device. I have set variable so I can see uninstalled devices etc. and have removed all disk drives not in use and also all old USB devices. Only change is that W2k no longer shows drive letters. Uninstalling unknown device then searching for new devices brings up "Foun…

How to differentiate windows 2000 from XP
by Guest Sriprinks@gmail.com- 4 replies
Hi, I have a software that can check for system process running on a computer. I wish to use this software to differentiate between a windows 2000 system and windows xp. Is there a system process that is specific and found only in Windows 2000 and not in windows xp? If there is one, then I can prevent windows 2000 systems from coming on to my network by first checking for this process and then blocking network access. Appreciate ur thoughts on this..

Adding a new IP address.. causes server downtime?
by Guest Kenny- 0 replies
Hi, I realise I must add a new IP address to my windows 2000 server for hosting another SSL site on a unique domain name on the same ssl port (443) of the same server. I already have several sites running on this server. Will I cause any downtime by adding a new IP address? Can I just go ahead and add the new IP address or could this cause the server to disconnect from the network? Many thanks, Kenny

Something's going on with my son's Win2K SP4 machine. Somehow, the slave drive (with all his data and media) can't be found. When investigate with Disk Management, the drive shows to be 'Healthy (Active)'. FWIW, the C: drive is formatted FAT. TIA for any ideas how we might recover the drive content!! David

by Guest promicro- 9 replies

Hi I can no longer boot my Win2K sp4, the erd and repair mode doesn't fix it; I can only boot from my floppy boot disk. I've replaced my boot.ini and edited them to see all of the drives and partitions with no success. I would like to re-install the system over the existing system, so my question is: can I do this without having to re-install the service packs and additional installed software ?? thanks for all your help rob

locked out of administrator
by Guest Johnny- 3 replies

Okay, I know I'm a doofus for getting locked out of the administrator account but I'm wondering if there's anything smart I can do now. I took a machine off the domain and when it restarted the administrator account wouldn't work. My instinct is to just prep a new disk for the machine, run the old disk as data drive to capture user settings/ datafiles.

node type peer-peer
by Guest riccardimarco@libero.it- 0 replies

On a windows 2000 server, suddenly, I found in ipconfig the node type moved in peer-peer. Obviously, the server sharing are impossible to be reach surfing the network, and from the is impossible to find any network object. This a stand-by server in a cluster configuration; I tried to add the regedit key Nodetype "8" (hybrid, in HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters), but with no result, and, in the same time, Oracle on the cluster crashed. Now the Oracle is ok, but the security in my cluster is very low. Someone has any idea about this issue? Many thanks, Marco Riccardi

Printing Mulitpal copies on shared printer.
by Guest Vince- 0 replies

I am going to post here first but may have to go elsewhere but believe this should be my first step. I have a rather strange issue. I have a mixed network I am currently working with that has Windows 2000 server, Windows 2000 pro and XP Pro machines included. Not a regular user of these machines I just discovered a strange issue. I have two machines that both have HP5si printers attached. One of the printers is attached to an XPPro machine and the other is connected to the Win2000 server machine. When I try to print from Note Pad or Word Pad using the File/Print not the print icon on the tool bar, and I change the quanty to print more than one cop…

The soruce of difficulty and final solution, along with potential scenraios dicussed along the way wer great...cut them all out and pasted into ref doc for future referral since I also use and like win2k. Was just preparing to upgrade hdds since digital photographer now. So far none were larger than 80G. I was trying to determine whether there were any limitations in win2k for HDD capacity, only clue was hits to need for updates on an ata133 pci carrd i have on hand, hadn't used to this point. Sticking with ultra ATA100 and max 120GB for now, since with upgrade to newer system in a year or so will likely be going to xp anyway. Don't want to have m…

Show Logoff on the Start Menu for every user
by Guest Ron Hinds- 1 reply

How can I set it so that anyone who logs onto a W2K Pro SP4 machine has the Logoff choice shown on the Start Menu? Assume there are users that haven't logged on yet - I would like them to automatically have this option the first time they use the machine. It would also be nice if the "Connect to the Internet" icon did not show on the desktop. This computer is a web kiosk machine. Thanks!

I have tried to shut down and when it comes back up the error report comes back and I can't get into internet. Does anyone have an idea how I can get rid of this? Thanks... -- ji

Network Drives Mapped to an FTP server
by Guest Josh 'Ramen' Miller- 0 replies

I've been setting up an ftp using Windows 2000 Server recently and I was wondering if there is a way to map a networked drive on another machine as a directory on the server. I'd rather not keep a whole separate copy of the files on the server machine if I don't have to. -- Josh Miller http://www.lameazoid.com
