Question about DLL search directories
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 4 replies
- 422 views
In recent versions of Windows, the following order is used to search for a DLL that an application wants to load: 1) the directory from which the application loaded 2) the system directory 3) the 16-bit system directory 4) the Windows directory 5) the current directory 6) the directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable Prior to Windows XP SP2, the current directory was searched second (before the system directory), but that was changed for security purposes. But can someone explain to me how the current directory could ever contain DLLs that the program needs, if the current directory is different from the other directories listed above…

Year changing after reboot
by Guest rammer007- 3 replies

Every time I reboot the computer the date/time calendar year changes from 2007 to 2005. It has been doing this the last 4 to six weeks. What causes this and what can I do to stop it. I know the year has changed because I keep getting certificate expiration notices, which force mean I have to go to control panel/date-time/ and change the year which for some reason goes to 2005.

more than a shell change
by Guest parahumanoid- 1 reply

Hi, I wonder if I can achieve running an application as the only one on the console. While running it instead of a shell in a windowed environment, where a GUI task is available upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, is adequate for some scenarios, I would like to remove that opportunity and make it truly the only accessible application. You know, the X-window style thing, where quitting the app also quits the logon session. I suppose that would mean interception of the Ctrl+Alt +Del hook. Essentially, I am looking for MetaFrame's functionality without using MetaFrame (preferably, using the native Windows functionality, not installing add-on products). Ideas? Thanks…

Want to avoid 750Sata Disk coming in as disk 0
by Guest nesredep egrob- 2 replies

I have bought a 750GB Sata WD disk to store some of the video I am working on at the moment. When I open up Disk Management I see the disk is there as disk 0 and that it is a dynamic disk. I cannot remember how to sort out that problem. I was wanting the disk to be partitioned in 5 seperate logical drives to continue after logical G. I can really use some help here. As you can guess I have installed the drive and used the W2000 disk to get to where you press F6, where I used the floppie Raid to install the driver. From there I dropped out of the installation using F3 all of which is fairly standard. Help Please Borge in sunny Perth, Australia

Everythings a [*.lnk] after Anti-Spy downloads
by Guest Kevin T. Mahoney- 0 replies

Everybody, and Anybody, HELP!! I've been plagued with Errors [Runtime, MSIMN.exe, "Unexplained", etc.] slow-downs, and crashes for weeks. Running Windows 200-Professional, w/IE6, OE6, and receiving MS/Windows Automatic Updates. I've hunted to no avail to download real MS Anti-V/Anti-Spy Programs that will work on my "LOWLY Win2000". Last night, and into the early A.M., I tried several "Third-Party" set-ups for this type of program. One said that I was infested with dozens (no exageration) of Viruses[virii ?], Trojan Horses, etc. which could only be contained and erraticated with thier "Full" purchased pack. I tried to UNinstall that from my PC, a…

Cannot boot from disk 0 after mirror rebuild only from floppy
by Guest Bob Klein- 0 replies

Lost disk (0), broke mirror, replaced the drive and rebuilt the mirror. But the drive will not boot without the help of my Fault tolerant disk. Disk (0) has c: as active partition and I have all the proper files and boot.ini set correctly. I've read and done everything in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/119467 & 120227 but still cannot get it to boot. Using the diskpart.exe utility it shows C:\ as active on both disk 0 and disk 1. I also booted to the windows 2000 startup and did a repair with the ERD, having it inspect startup and boot. Still no luck. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Gretings Recently the performance has severely degraded. Looking at the events, I found that I am getting every 20 minutes or so the following event: Event Type: Information Event Source: Ci Event Category: CI Service Event ID: 4109 Master merge was started on c:\inetpub\catalog.wci because more than 20000 documents have changed since the last master merge. When it finishes in 10-15 minutes, I get the following: Event Type: Information Event Source: Ci Event Category: CI Service Event ID: 4103 Master merge has completed on c:\system volume information\catalog.wci. "No just-in-time debugger installed" - but there is !
by Guest Jethro- 0 replies
Hi all, running Win2000 Server, using VI6. Had no problems debugging, and (as far as I know) haven't installed anything new. Now I can't run the interdev debugger. I get an error message telling me there is no just- in-time debugger installed. However looking through the registry, all the keys seem OK (they all "join up" and all the inprocserver32 files exist.) Running C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\vsjitdebugger pulls up the same message. Have googled and found zip, so wondered if anyone else had experienced that (and hopefully fixed it), it could give me some pointers thanks in advance

Mouse Behavior
by Guest Roger Fink- 0 replies
I'm running a five button wired Intellimouse Optical mouse using Kensington Mouseworks software on W2K. I've done this for years (mostly on 98SE) and it's a very nice setup - virtually bug free and much better than Microsoft's Intellipoint software. But lately I've developed a problem which at least so far I can't correct. For some reason, despite my user settings to the contrary, the mouse automatically moves the pointer to the default setting in a dialog box. The user setting under Mouse in the control panel - which is set to disallow this behavior - appears to be reflected in the registry setting as best I can tell. The only computer events I can think of th…

[OT?] CD-ROM and Hard Drive on Same Cable
by Guest W. Watson- 4 replies

I can't find a suitable PC hardware NG that looks current, so I'll post here until someone directs me to a better NG. It's been awhile since I played hook up with drives. Here's my problem. I have a CD-ROM drive at the end of a cable. It works fine. I thought I'd stick a HD in as a slave. It doesn't get detected. I made it a slave. However, I have no idea what the CD-ROM thinks it is--Ah, master according to BIOS. It looks like it has two jumpers. (What are the jumper possibilities for it?) It's a 56x Disc shown in BIOS as G6D M1.30. I'm pretty sure the cables are 48-pin. The HD is a boot disk from an older system, and is in a removable drive (handle on…

Reboot / Restart --- continuously
by Guest dvandusen- 6 replies

I have a continuous reboot/restart on a W2K server after an update. The boot process goes past the bios, then the boot up of the loader (the ........... at the bottom of the screen when allowing an F8), then through the windows 2k load (the splash screen with windows 2k with a progress bar at the bottom), past the keyboard initialization (the lights on the shift led's), through the final splash screen, and to the change to the light blue screen where the pointer is supposed to show. It restarts after 2 seconds, just before the point where the pointer icon displays. There are no devices on this machine other than a Raid card that is/was working fine. Th…

Is it OK to enable SafeDllSearchMode?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 7 replies
- 586 views
I read that the registry key SafeDllSearchMode was introduced in Windows 2000 SP3. It improves security by searching in the system directories for DLLs before searching in the current directory. But it was disabled by default in all versions of Windows until Windows XP SP2 because it could potentially break existing applications. Does anyone know what applications will break if you enable it?

"no operating system found" when 2nd hard drive connected
by Guest jbclem- 2 replies

I just added a 2nd hard drive to my Win2000 computer. It's the only device on the secondary IDE cable, set as "master". It's recognized in the bios setup but I can't access it in Dos (using Xtree Gold) and when I boot up the computer it's listed on the screen below the primary computer and the CD-Rom drive. But the boot doesn't go much further, just to a black screen with words that say somethuing like "no operating system found". I've found that if I turn off this 2nd hard drive (it's installed in an external sleeve with an off-on key) the computer will boot up normally. If I turn on the 2nd hard drive and reboot I get the "no operating system found" message. …
