Windows Installer Error on W2K
by Guest George Schneider- 6 replies

Sorry for the repost. I orignaly posted this to the wrong newsgroup. During an application installation i'm receiving an error 1931. The Windows Installer service cannot update the system file C:\Winnt\system32\MSCPXL32.DLL becuase the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for the program to work correctly. How can I resolve this error during install? Apparently the application is trying to update this file and is being blocked from doing so? I checked rights and that sort of thing and everything seems normal to me. If I click ok the install finishes and everything appears to work correctly but I would really lik…

If you do a new Win2K install and first delete any existing partitions, you need to reboot after that to avoid unexpected drive letters. Does anyone know if the same is true for XP?

Duplicate Folders under Two Directories in Windows Explorer
by Guest Summer1- 0 replies

I will make this as clear as possible. I wanted to attach a file in Hotmail but when I clicked on 'Browse'(to search for the 'My Documents' folder where the file was), it was not listed. Hotmail only shows history, desltop, my computer, a: drive c: drive, d: drive, and my network places so I decided to move the 'Ny Documents' folder to the C: directory. When I clicked on 'Brose' in hotmail again, I found the 'file' under C: drive because it was listed. Unfortunately, it moved 'all' of my files to the C: directory and kept the original 'My Document' folder plus all of its attached 'files' there. Now I have duplicate folders under 'My Documents' and 'C: dri…

Formatting

I've got a 4GB CompactFlash card that I'm trying to format through my card reader/writer external unit. I've tried a quick format and a full format. When both formats are complete, the summary shows the correct figure for the drive, but when I right click and view properties on the drive, the card is showing as only 1.96GB. What have I done wrong and what should I do to make the drive the correct size of 3.**GB? Thanks for any help.

Interrupts Time Placeholder very high %cpu usage
by Guest jbclem- 4 replies

Once or twice a day my cursor will become catatonic...I will move it and 15 seconds later the little arrow will move. This will go one for five minutes or so then things will go back to normal. The only clue I have is that I've noticed (using TaskInfo) that when this happens the Interrupts Time Placeholder will be using up to 95% of the cpu%. This may also be related to the 1-3 times a day lock up I'm getting...I'll be moving the cursor/mouse and either in mid movement or as I start to click on an icon or menu item...the cursor will freeze in place. I've waited for an hour and more to see if the computer will unlock but it never happens, I always have to reb…

File search
by Guest millin- 8 replies

Hi All, I want to find a solution for one of our file structure implemented in our organization. We are having a Kofax scanner that scans all the incoming documents (drawings) and place automatically in a network shared folder; this is ongoing for last 10 years or so. The software does it by copying every 500 files in a single folder so you can image how many number of files are there in that shared folder, like that we have got 500 folders. So anybody can give me a quicker solution for finding the obsolete drawings on each folder by not going to each folder, looking for the pdf documents and delete one by one looking for the issue numbers. eg:- …

IE6 missing from add-remove
by Guest Roger Fink- 8 replies

I want to try to fix a problem in a friend's W2K computer (over the phone) by having her use the repair function for IE6 where it's listed in add-remove. Unfortunately, on her computer IE6 it is not listed in add-remove. Is there something I can have her do in Windows (hopefully easy since she's a Mac user) to get this to work, either by restoring it to add-remove, or entering a command to repair IE6 from the command prompt, or some other technique?

File association works on one machine and not another
by Guest inews@questuscorp.com- 4 replies

I have an application for which I have to create a file association on each computer where I use it. I go to the "File Types" dialogue box. Click "New" Type the file extension Click on the advanced settings Click "New" in the actions area Type "open" Type "<path>.exe" "%1" OK back to Windows Explorer On computer A, every file with the file extension opens in the program requested when I double click on it in Windows Explorer or click on a hyperlink in Word or Excel. On computer B, the program opens, but without opening the file on which I double clicked. Both computers have identical file assocations set up, as detailed above. Does anybody…

I have 2 harddisk, 1 installed with Win2K and one with WinXP. Both have the same drive letters, C,D,E. The OS is installed on C. I would attached 1 drive at a time to start up the OS. I need to copy some files across (without using an external HDD). What would happen if I attached both the drives ? Would the OS be corrupted and then not be bootable ? Thanks.

how to make (format) a system disk
by Guest jbclem- 6 replies

I want to put system files on a floppy disk. But going to a cmd prompt and typing format a:\ /s doesn't work because the format command is not recognized. Does Win2000 have a way to do this. I tried booting up into Dos to do this, but I still don't know where the appropriate format.exe file is so that didn't work either. I'm using FAT32 for a file system. Where can I find a format.exe that will work with this? John

Slow shutdown/logoff
by Guest Steve Gage- 3 replies

Hello Folks, I am wondering if there are any particular things I should look for in trying to diagnose a long (about a minute) shutdown time. The delay appears to be in the "Saving your settings" phase. I created a new account, and it shuts down after just a second or two, so it would not seem to be a hardware glitch. Any ideas? (running Windows 2000, SP4, all updates) Thanks in advance, - Steve
