Firewalls and Modems--No Need?
by Guest W. Watson- 3 replies

I went into a store to buy firewall for a P3 PC with a modem that I'm working on for a neighbor. I knew several people were pretty savvy with PCs, so asked them for a suggestion. The first one was why bother? Who really is going to try to invade a PC that is connected by a firewall? They may have a good point. Hi folks, Got a problem my inlaws purchased a new desktop - P4 duo, 1GB RAM DVD RW etc. BUT it came with no HDD. So we went out and got a new Maxtor 160GB SATA HDD. Their old machine was had win 2000 pro sp4 all patched up. with only a 10GB EIDE drive. I ghosted the old drive to the new one(SATA), enabled S.M.A.R.T, and tried to boot. But every time I boot from the new (or old for that matter) HDD I get the BSOD - 'cannot access boot device etc.......' I have used Hirens CD to FDisk, format, reformat and do just about every thing I can think of to be able to get this darn thing to just boot up. But to no avail. I am stuck. Any suggestions?? I would GREATLY a…

My stepfather tried to to a system repair with windows 2000. It would not do a repair so he reinstalled windows. He now has 2 operating systems on his machine. Can one be removed and how or does he reformat and start over. If that is the case where is the best place to get step by step directions. Should he download drivers to a disk as well? He will not have access to the internet while his system is down. It is an older machine but the only one that is in the budget.

NTFS Question - Windows 2000
by Guest Ryan- 5 replies

Hello, I recently bought a two new 500GB drives and have them hooked up to a Rosewill RAID card (RC-209) in RAID1. Windows 2000 sees a single 500GB drive and all is good. I created a new partition format the drive with 512 cluster size, and when finished I have working disk that show 180MB of used space in 3 files. I only know there are three files because of disk defrag. The same method shows the MFT is only about 27KB. So a few questions: 1) What are the three files (is MFT one of these?) 2) Which is taking up 180MB? 3) Since I thought OS files were not included in used-space calculations, why am I showing used space. 4) Is there a way to view the f…

I have a Win 2000 server and I have 3 units: C:\ D:\ E:\ I'm doing a Full ntbackup monthly (1 bkf file for all the units) I'm doing a Diff ntbackup daily (1 bkf file for each day) too. My question is: If I need to reinstall the server, what's the requisite to restore the last full backup and its diff backup in the new installation?? Can I install a Win 2000 server with only the C:\ unit or I need the same partitions and size to restore the bkf? ntbackup create the new partirion itself if free space on the disk?? W2K Bootup problem + slowed machine
by Guest Olin K. McDaniel- 18 replies

In recently downloading all headers from the past several months and then downloading selected posts, I found a couple that addressed a problem very similar to one I've now got. However, there didn't seem to be a genuine solution to their problems, so I'm reopening essentially the same subject and asking for help. I may have a few different and perhaps more useful observations to throw out this time. My system consists of an older CPU (Pentium III, 600 MHz), and a matching MB. For years now I've used it as a Dual Boot System, one being Windows 98 SE and the other being Windows 2000 Pro, with Service Pack 4. (For the record, W98SE is FAT 16, while Win2K is F…

Forward Email to Individual Accounts
by Guest jmhmaine- 0 replies

Hi: I have an STMP and POP3 Service running on a Windows 2003 server. I have setup a few accounts under one of the domains hosted on the server. What I would like to do is setup a forwarding script/program/task that would forward mail addressed to a certain account to another individual email address that is not hosted on the server, such as: Mail to joe@smith.com is sent to jane@yahoo.com In this example smith.com is hosted on my server. I do NOT want to setup a generic forward for the whole domain to another SMTP server. Thanks.

Why can't i run card reader+flash drive at the same time?
by Guest kimiraikkonen- 0 replies

Here is a strange problem: First i've thought that it was because of Win2k's crappy drivers, then upgraded to XP SP2 Pro but the same problem, if i connect flash drive with my SD card reader (USB), the flash drive will not be recognized any longer. But if i run it alone or other USB devices like USB gamepad or 2 USB flash drive, it works OK. I also tried different ports with no help, the other USB devices or this USB devices works well with another system when connected together. I've checked system info with no conflict, only there are some IRQ sharings which haven't been problem since i plug card reader with flash drive at the same time. What should i do?…

Hi folks, Got a strange issue here. Running W2K Server, SP4, with Citrix Metaframe 4.0. The "Performance Object" for "Memory" has disappeared from the Performance Monitor. The Performance Objects list jumps from "logical disk" to "NBT connections". I'm not yet sure, whether other counters are missing yet. Any ideas...................
