We have a situation where our deskside staff has/is installing VirtualServer on a number of workstations, which is fine, but they are installing W2k03 Server as VM's in some cases. When doing so, they are having them join the domain, which we do not want. These are usually developers, is there any way that we can prevent the ability to joining a W2k03 server to the domain but allow those credentials to still install workstations to the domain?

Unable to change message store location in Outlook Express
by Guest Frank Shrader- 5 replies

I posted this on the OE6 newsgroup--feedback suggested that Power Users may not have the permission needed to make the changes I want to make when Windows 2000 Professional is installed on an NTFS partition. They suggested I present my problem to the Windows 2000 community. I am unable to change the location of the Outlook Express 6 (OE6) message store folder when logged on as a power user; however, I have no problem changing its location when I change my group membership to the Administrators Gp. My OS is Windows 2000 Professional w/SP4, browser is IE6 and I am using Outlook Express 6. All available updates are installed. As a Power User, when I try to …

Registry Key Won't Delete
by Guest Roger Fink- 3 replies

I'm unable to delete the following dead link from the registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{436F4AD7-C95B-4d2f-B0F8-8DC643F7 A200}] A google groups search indicates that someone else has experienced the same problem (in XP). The solution, quoting MVP Raneesh, and confirmed by the original poster: "This CLSID may be created by a third-party application you may have installed. If you are unable to delete this key, check the permissions for that key and the respective software is not running. Or, leave this key as it is." How do you "check the permissions for that key"?

GUI Issue
by Guest Roger Fink- 1 reply

I'm having two GUI problems in Windows 2000. Perhaps they are related. In my desktop computer, which is set up the way I want, I'm able to display the files within the Control Panel as large icons. This is the only folder I do this with, for the rest I use the details view. Additionally, in the quicklaunch taskbar, I can arrange the application shortcut icons any way I want. Both of these aforementioned settings remain reliably consistent. By contrast, the laptop is kind of rebelious. It only allows me to use the Details view for the Control Panel icons (I can change it but it always reverts to Details when reopened). Also, the same application shortcut icons …

How to Install W2K on a Modern System (Lessons Learned the Hard Way)
by Guest W. Watson- 0 replies

Rev. Aug. 18, 2007 I've learned a bit more about this, and it's reflected in this revision post. [start of an Aside on How This Got Started] Learned from various sources including the thread I started here, "Can W2K Be Installed on SATA Drives?" Let me start with an explanation of "the Hard Way". I have a P5NSLI ASUS motherboard that supports both IDE and SATA controllers. The key word is "both". I wanted to install W2K on the STATA HD, a 320G WS SATA drive. I had some fun trying to get to a point where the OS install asked how I wanted to partition the drive. I was stumped by this window that came up in the install: ============================== 76294…

Regarding the pdate Rollup 1 for W2K SP4--Getting Past Validate

See <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;displaylang=en&familyid=B54730CF-8850-4531-B52B-BF28B324C662&displaylang=en> How does this work to get the download? Do I use the Continue button to get to step 1 and download the validation program (GenuineCheck.exe) and then execute it on the W2K machine? Apparently, it produces a validation code, which is then entered into step 2. I'm assuming if it validates the code, then the actual download button is revealed, correct? -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>
